    Is this a replica too?

The size and weight are correct for the official Royal Mint issue, but I'd certainly dip it.

    Prince James Stuart medal.

It's a well known token by Norbert Roettier. Condition wise, it's not too bad and current value is between £40-60.
  4. Pound started to float around the start of March 71

    Gun money

No, I think it unlikely that yours is March, but I'm trying to find my images of the one I sold last year to check.
  6. 1970 8 coin set £8.75 1971 six coin set £8.85 I've just realised that the info comes from Krause SCWC, so substitute $ for £

  9. If this were a die, the lettering would be in reverse. My best guess is a button.
  10. Has the image been reversed out for reading clarity? If not, then it isn't a die; possibly a hub.

    Gun money

Last year I sold a February 1689 shilling for £10.00 and a March 1690 shilling for £24.50. Both were in a slightly rougher condition than yours. It's worth noting that gun money for March 1690 is some of the rarest and for a very specific reason. At the time we used two calendars, full unification with the Gregorian calendar not coming until 1752. The legal New Year began on March 25th, so any coin minted for March 1690 had a validity of just eight days.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I'm fairly positive that it's wrong. I had one offered to me in February, in hand it felt "greasy", certainly not like silver and when I switched the scales on he suddenly decided that he really didn't want to sell it.

Looks like CCF has a membership of around 45k. Maybe 70-75% North American, so let's say +/- 33k U S collectors using that site, and there's rarely less than 1500 active users at any one minute of the day. I think that ebay would not wish to p**s off any organisation representing that many American collectors, particularly when those guys always ensure that they get their facts straight before complaining. I'm just happy that they are not as insular as other US groups and will fight to protect collectors interests worldwide.

    Cleaning Proof coins

I was fortunate for four months to be the custodian of a Korehira Watanabe sword. A colleague was working away and had no desire to leave it in his house for that length of time. Although modern, it is a thing of incomparable beauty.

Can you get me a bit more light on the subject please Declan?

  20. Gin and orange? Sorry Gentlemen, but that is completely beyond the pale.
  21. I can relate to a lot of this. The coin drawers made with a spade bit? I have them. Old silver in awful plastic sheets? Four ring binders full. One thing that did work for me, although I've never had the nerve to try it on a viable coin, was to get a cheap ultrasonic jewellery cleaner and load up the active chamber with acetone. It's not good for your health, it's expensive and you could get some friction marks. On the other hand it takes off the green slime perfectly. Just do it in the open air, OK? Now lets wait for the mob to come, pitchforks in hand, to burn us as heretics,

Interestingly, apart from all the TPG logos, he claims to be a life member of the ANA and to be accredited by the Better Business Bureau. The latter a strictly US organisation.
