In that case, I'm glad I passed on this one. -
Paper hanging manufacturers Manchester coin

The seller's picture made it look a whole lot better, or was there more than one for sale? -
" the previous owner has annotated the streakiness as being caused by the use of WW1 shell casings in the mix" I've heard this explanation as far back as the 60s, but have never seen it in print.

Can someone please confirm...

I think it's Portuguese, possibly a real of Emmanuel but my references don't go back that far. -
I've not seen this particular piece before but it bears two "hallmarks" of the spangle or belly dancer's coin. First, the outer circle of dots, reminiscent of late C19th Tunisian coins and secondly the hole. The more regular the hole, the more likely it is to be dodgy. Can't make out the date, but it's usually given with an impossible Regnal year like 44. And no Ottoman coin features a star that I'm aware of.

I had this down as Obv.3, but there seems to be a different figure behind the 3. Or at least one with more meat on it than usual.

Or is it just PMD?

Anyone else enjoying Spink Live!

Purely anecdotal from a relative who was a WWII veteran. Some of these "life saving" coins, cigarette cases and pocket watches were made on the shooting range just prior to demob. The range being the place that the .22 bullet was most commonly used.

Many of the people contributing to that Collector's Universe board are very heavy hitters indeed with disproportionately great influence in U.S. collecting. A TPG that risks offending some of those guys could find itself rapidly losing custom.

Dating an old boxes containing 1797 pattern pennies

When you say very small scales, it is possible the it is Shagreen, which is prepared sharkskin. It was a popular covering late 18th- mid 19th century and is fantastically hard wearing. Some examples still look pristine after 200 years. Colours at that time were usually in the green and blue scales, red is very rare. A photo of the box and in particular the hinges may help to date it. -
CGB have thrice given me partial refunds because THEY considered a piece I'd purchased to be over priced. And it's the best online resource I've found to date. Grading can be slightly ambitious on their Jetons though.

Merde! Retour à la planche à dessin.

Rotate the coin 180 degrees. If you look at others in the Ecu series you will find that the letters CHRS appear in the top right hand quadrant. As to what that makes it I have no idea, unless someone has been altering an Aix ampersand mintmark.

"Sure - only the price will be ahmmm...slightly different" Well, if you decide to relinquish your grip on The Liberties of Europe, I might be persuaded to pay a small premium.
-
I'm hoping that you'll now be selling the stuff you keep beating me to on ebay.
-
The odd thing is how he arrived at such a non-standard opening bid? I didn't notice if he was on ebay.uk or ebay.com, but the price works out to $120.00
-
AFIK it was only made in Virenium. One slight oddity is that it usually fetches more than the 1980BB proof, despite having 5 times the mintage.

My wife is happy because she knows she spends more on shoes than I do on coins.
-
And it appears to be his first ever sale! Isn't he a lucky boy.
-
At the front of the currency is a British Forces banknote and they aren't even worth face value in Unc. Would you like to borrow a bargepole?
-
To be fair, I'm assuming the seller has put up the wrong photos. Yes, it's the pic from his coin ending two minutes later.

Now that Spink have kicked thesaleroom into touch, the new Spink Live is proving impossible to download even with the latest Adobe Air. In fact it's Adobe that's doing the objecting. Anyone else having problems?
