Thank you David. Well I have an opinion, but some may not like it. If the coins had been stolen from an individual then what was done was right and they should be returned, but I disagree completely with any gov't imposing or demanding that any coin or such belongs to them de-facto, and is therefore gov't property, I personaly would not inform the gov't of the find or whereabouts of a coin farmer Giles ploughed out of his field by luck, regardless of its perceived importance to the state. I have a personal dislike of those professor types etc who sit at desks writing papers or other such stuff on the labours of other people, or who scream how metal detectorists are ripping up the land and our cultural heritage to bits merely to benefit their own careers whilst doing nothing to seek this stuff themelves. It seems to me they are more than happy to sit on their backsides and wait for it to come to them. I don't suppose many go out regularly in the cold, wind, rain or other foul weather at their own expense and actually put in the spade work as detectorists do. What gives any gov't the right to claim any coin found is theirs ( someone owned it before them! ), nothing as far as i am concerned, If the conservators or archaeologists want it so badly let them go and dig them up, otherwise it can never be seen and probably rust or rot away, no one wins then. I spoke to someone recently who said we had the best treasure laws about, but whilst I agree in relation to other countries I don't as a whole, if I find one coin it's mine, if I find two its treausre trove, pfft, one or twenty, it's the same too me I am afraid, only the numbers change, if they want one for history and archaeology then they can buy it from me or borrow it for cataloguing, not shoving in their greedy little safes never or rarely to be shown to the public, or like so many of our "nationally declared" treasures, sold of to the highest bidder in many years to come in order to save their failing little museum. I could explain and defend my perceptions further but I don't think we have space. Simply put, if it's stolen from an individual it gets returned and the law takes it course, if it came out of the ground I say it belongs to the person who found it. Sorry, for rant. I do have a B1 laser detector, although I got it to find the wifes ring she lost ( never did find it ), I am not a metal detectorist, although I would probably jump at the chance to be shown how to do it properly.

Ooh I knew nothing about it, please do tell, or point me to a site with relevant reading material.

Once upon a time you could only hold a small number of gold coins here without a licence but those days are gone. Hypothetically any counterfeit coins could be confiscated but it simply doesn't happen, unless you're the counterfeiter. I was actually reffering to such coins as the ( excuse me if I spell it wrong !) st gaudens dollars that were allegedly found in a safety box, or the American 1974 aluminum penny. According to a site i was reading, if you have one the secret service will pay you a visit as they were never officialy circulated.

I have received an email from spink. They do not own any copyright from that old firm. Dear Mr Williams, In response to your request for information regarding "Numismatic Publishing Company", we know nothing of their heirs or successors so can not help you in this regard. Sincerely Philip Skingley

black country pub token
Gollum replied to headsortails's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
If this is not you too. http://www.blackcountrybugle.co.uk/News/Reminder-of-long-lost-Stourbridge-inn.htm Snap !. The london gazette search has the old pipe inn referenced as late as 1890, http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/all=old+pipe+stourbridge/start=1 half way down. I gave up after that as there is a lot of naughty people in that area according to court reports and it got scary, still no sign of H.Harper etc or your token. I would imagine there would be some records about as it isn't really that old to be completely out of local memories is it. -
So far I have only been able to trace the following staff of the old company. Margaret and Peter linton. Peter Williams. David Coultridge. From what i can make out peter and Margaret are deceased according to google. However it may be that the copyright went to either of the big two, spink or Krause. Companies house seems to hold no information on their dissolvment either.

Wanted Cartwheel Penny
Gollum replied to Gollum's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Indeed you can, and they are dead heavy and not very shiny Magpie except in VF++ and above, careful what you wish for! Hi Paulus, I only have one wish, well two, one is for more knowledge bringing the ability to be able to work out coins for myself, the other is erm well, to figure out what I want to collect specifically, so many shiny objects to look at leave me with much confusion... -
Wanted Cartwheel Penny
Gollum replied to Gollum's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Thank you Chris, the education is continuing,I didn't know that about these and 1797. I asked here because I would prefer one from a forum member than a dodgy copy /possible fake from ebay. -
magpie may have been a better name, they like shiny objects too I actually like magpie better but it was a late thought, so if Peck wants to change it AGAIN go for it Peck
-
I would say EF/gEF. I want it in my collection so I will say "poor" and hope you are blind and I get a cheap price  . Seriously, i have no idea but it is pretty and shiny, Gollum likes.

I have to admit, I like some of them, my only proble with them is that whilst I could prove the coin itself is genuine, i could not prove the same of the engraving and its origins, many could be a modern fake on original coin, I can only imagine how much more a bad coin would sell for if it had say a message from nelson to lady Hamilton on it. I am not knocking anyones dream or desires, I am just pessimistic about them.

1856 copper penny warning.
Gollum replied to stebuzz's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It is the same photograph. So conceivably the American seller (whose price is about double what the English seller sold for) was so confident of winning that he put the coin up before he had won the English auction, but also possible that they were in cahoots although quite how this could be achieved is unclear. It is too distinctive, or even pig ugly, a coin to forge so can't see that there is any other explanation. I can agree to the in cahoots theory, or that they were just waiting to see who got the most for the same coin, however if the amercian seller was merely confdent of winning etc, it leaves me with the puzzle as to how he has so many more pictures of this coin than the "original UK" owner/seller where I would expect it to be the other way around. -

Gollum replied to stebuzz's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I would say that is obvious dear watson, as the other US party has an abundance of them on their auction, then the person with the single one must of "borrowed" one, or else they would have the same number on theirs for the US party to have taken and then also displayed. Now pass me my violin and crack pipe dear chap . -

I suppose they could both be genuine coins, but one of the sellers here in the uk has stolen the others picture and wont admit it. What's the chances of that with this specific coin date though. -
1856 copper penny warning.
Gollum replied to stebuzz's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Well, they should be. Neither auction states that the coin is not the one pictured. The British one has now ended. The American one shows both sides of the (same) penny, enlargements. Someone has asked the American seller if the penny for sale is the coin in the picture, and been told "Yes". There is definitely something funny going on. And it's quite clearly the same coin - there couldn't be any mistake about it. Thanks you two, got them now. Well if it is not resolved, I wont be buying from either of them in future. -

A link to both coins would be good ?. If you are referring to these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GB-Victorian-Copper-Penny-1856-/320823495880?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ab2920cc8 http://www.ebay.com/itm/GB-Victorian-Copper-Penny-1856-/320823495880?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ab2920cc8 Which are the only two identical ones I can find, they are the same seller and in the same place. -
Why, she's dressed, nothing to be ashamed of and she knows it's here (before it was posted too ).

I have some stuff I want to sell on ebay, I want to sell it without paying that mob a fortune in fees, and as fast as I can, it's all stuff from when I kept fish, and quite a lot of it, The fish stuff is a lot of mixed items. like eheim filter and pumps etc, but I do not want to split it all up, I would rather it went as one lot, my problem is also what category to put it in !. I also have a sony walkman X-1050 mp3 player with desktop carrier. So if you can help explain to me how to do this I would be grateful. If not then I am going to have to sell the wife and kids for coin funds , actualy that sounds like it could be a resounding success.
