I think that's a good idea Sword! Not just useful for newcomers either, I think it's at least as big a topic as toning

I have ALWAYS wanted one of those, it can sit proudly among the coins in my Westminster and Pobjoy collections ... please can I ask that members show restraint and not bid on this item?

Coins Of England 2014
Paulus replied to Nick's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I just had a look and all they have is the 2013 edition. It still costs £17.99 What's more, it's advertised as a hardback. Wonder how THAT gets down the phoneline? I had the same problem when I downloaded a couple of books to read on holiday. I almost clicked on the 'hardback' download for £21.99, before I noticed the £4.99 'paperback' alternative! I wonder how many people have thrown money away on that? Am I missing something here? I have never downloaded a book to iTunes so I probably am, but what the smeg is the difference between a 'hardback' download and a 'paperback' download?! "From" not "to", surely? Indeed so -

Fascinating, great post AardHawk! -
I got mine from Downies, and even when I took it to them in hand and asked them to confirm it was okay they had no doubts about it ... but it wasn't okay at all. Be very wary! This is the fella, rejected by CGS because (mainly) of the shape of the 6 in the date (the lower part of it should be a more 'rounded 'O'):

I can't see any trace of a 7 me neither! Anyway it's Tudor not Stuart (sorry!)

I've Long Wondered The Mintage Of The 1935 Specimen Crown
Paulus replied to Gary D's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Vicky, do you know how I can tell the Specimens apart from the normal currency? (Apart from the specimens being in a red cardboard box!) -
I get the feeling that all other series are neglected relative to pennies!! Anyone else?

Scanning And Photography
Paulus replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Well, for showing the edge with a scanner you need a lot of patience and you have to perform a lot of work. That image a the edge took me three dozens of single scans plus three additional hours of puzzling the single images into that big one... ChKy, I was hoping you had found a clever way of capturing the image of the edge, I can't see myself spending hours on each coin! However, once you have several images it shouldn't be too hard to assemble them in to a collage ... I find Paint.net (free) excellent for this. I wish CGS (the only TPG I have used so far) would take pics of the edge before slabbing, particularly where the edge is an important part of the type identification and/or grade! -

End of previous topic: How on earth did you manage to scan the edge? i was going to ask the same thing some sort of panoramic camera feature maybe? You are right! We should either split that discussion into a second thread or you guys may contact me and discuss your issues via PM. But so far I want to answer the previous questions... An hour???!!!!! Heavens to Betsy! I have never scanned a coin so I have no idea ... does 2,400 dpi take 1/5th of that time then - 10-12 minutes?? -
I bought 3 direct from the Royal mint, £60 (face) plus £12 shipping. Was your note meant to imply that we couldn't order them in the USA? Mine arrived early last week (Nov 5 I believe). The initial offer / advert was UK only. Obviously the market for mint products is quite suppressed in the UK. I did order 3 £60 for £60 is a no brainer. There are apparently 2 types identified already (2 marks on the butt of the horse & clear butt)....see coincomm. BTW I am pleased with mine. Got my 3 too, agreed it surely is a no-lose situation ... surely there is no way you would get less than £20 for one in the future (unless sold for £23 on eBay), and they were free postage ...

I would be most interested in who has had an experience of making a claim and how that went? I think Neil posted something in another post ... -
Yeah, you do need to watch out for salt air. Silica gel is fine for moisture (though you need to chase the moisture out of them at regular intervals), but I'm not sure what you should do about the salt air. But if you're not right by the sea, it's probably much less of a factor. I seem to remember Coinery saying he had some unwelcome seaside-related experiences with his coins? Stuart, what's your take?

A poster (BenByfield) on Coin Community is recommending the use of 'BadThad's Verdicare', stating that "it removes verdegris and dirt and leaves a protective layer and it actually works". Anyone had any experience with this product?

Very nice! Love that one Goomy! That could be your Victoria example sorted for your monarch collection ... mind you my vote would go to a Gothic florin for her example -
