Sorry Paulus, but you don't seem to understand the bidding screen either. At the instant in question ie 4 mins after bidding opened (22:00:23 on the 22-Aug-13) the only bidder was a***i(1282). Therefore the current winning bid at that point was the opening bid ie £0.01. Fairy Nuff Nick, I see what you mean!

I believe Stuart is correct:

Have you tried taking the battery out and popping it back in after a minute or 2?

Good one, there will be no bids no doubt, graded AU50 on the new SexySilver Scale of 0 - 10000!

Good Fine Mule £1,250 Any Takers?

Always makes me chuckle when you see the suggestion that a coin might be MORE collectible because it is in a LOWER grade! Maybe the Americans will introduce AW (Artificial Wear)! -

Welcome Jessica! This particular thread may not quite be showing off the Forum discussions in their very best light!

Not my area but I will have a stab at a grade of VF (perhaps a little better?), and Spink 2013 values one of these at £525 in VF. So, if genuine, a good price to pay might be £400-£450?

The NGC images are rubbish. You cannot discern any of the many scratches and surface marks from their images. If I were them, I'd be too embarrassed to put them on my website. It can't help that NGC take the photos after they have entombed the coin in a perspex slab!

Mostly I can just about understand the bidding and prices paid on the Bay (okay, some of the time), but this barely fine common shilling is hard to understand (i.e. why is it worth shilling this shilling or bidding this high - and there seems to be both shillings afoot!) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290959790788?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648

Thanks, I must say I wouldn't want to spend a grand on a coin that had been tampered with in any way, especially a 'star' coin like Pies is after, I just wouldn't feel quite the same about it What about if it is the only available example? Good question, so far I haven't dealt in such rarities being a very broad type collector, any varieties have come to me kind of accidentally - I guess if I wanted a particular type/date that very rarely became available I would have to consider whatever came on the market, even if (inevitably) less than perfect in many ways. And of course even with my broad focus on milled ESC types, what will I do if offered a 1798 D&M shilling that has a dubious past? I don't know!!

lol he has my vote! Will it be inflation adjusted each year Scott? -
I think I am getting better at spotting dipped/polished/cleaned silver, but what suggests that this penny is 'chemically dipped' ? I would be interested to know the tell-tale signs ...

Indeed, not sure I can see the 7 (or the 8)! Here is Stuart's ebay link - what a lazy git (only joking, I know you are using Dave's eyePhone! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360715046072?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D360715046072%26_rdc%3D1&autorefresh=true Our confused Buckinghamshire-cum-Norfolk compadre may have got this overdate correct however: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310720315858?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648 One of the clearest early milled silver overdates I have seen, and his grading is okay (but it's horrible I don't want it by the way!)

On a related note, I wonder if any of our members would voice an opinion on this ... how on earth do some dealers, many on eBay, list so much new stock of, say, early milled silver (my area of interest), every week? Where are they getting it from on such a regular basis?? Bucks coins (Peter, restrain yourself) has plenty of new stock all the time, I'm pretty sure it's not from auctions every week ... yes much of it is over-graded near fine stuff, but where does it come from? He seems to have tons of it, more than anyone on eBay, and seems to turn it over, how does he do that?

I use Auction Sniper, I think they are all much of a muchness, but worth every penny! The number of bargains I've missed, when not sniping, would've paid for it over and over again!I did catch JB for a few coins about two years ago, which I turned a couple of hundred quid a piece on maybe that's why he's now a shiller? That's good going Stuart! Such rich pickings are getting harder to find! Not that I've found more than a few over the years that I have made that sort of mark-up on, but then I'm not a dealer! What I would like is something that captures a bargain BIN before it is snaffled up, anyone know of anything?? It would need to be quite sophisticated! The BIN area is an area I've never really visited (though I have been watching one particular BIN coin for nearly a year now - it hasn't got to fall very much further and you'll get to see it on here [hammered & QE1]), I always factor it out of my searches, though I do remember Rob saying it was for rich pickings!Maybe I should take a better look at the 'newly listed' material in future, perhaps later in the year? You've let the cat out of the bag now, Paulus! Some of my recent IMO 'good value' or even dare I say it 'bargain' purchases have been newly listed BINs ... and I don't mind sharing "too much"! I have picked up a few for my collection that I would say were very under-graded and under-priced, and sold a couple on that have 'proved' that to be the case. Trouble is I don't have the time (like most) to go through every new eBay or eBin listing every day to sort the wheat from the chaff, so if anyone has a search criterion for, for example, newly listed early milled half crowns VF or better that would be great!! ... but that would be asking a hell of a lot and letting many cats out of many bags!!! Daily checks it is!

Well no, agreed, not exactly, though I'm as immune as I am wondering what comes out of the tap, or wondering what pollutants I breath in our great british fresh air! Out of sight out of mind is definitely best I think! Just see what transpires! Auction Sniper works well for me too, I think you recommended it to me!

This is a very interesting discussion for me, I like the psychology of various auction formats. Perhaps a website for a Chinese auction would be fun (although on second thoughts, perhaps not for coins)! Or a Dutch auction ... bit of Will 3 to the lowest bidder? It's beyond me some of this eBay activity, searching for some logic and finding little ... But you are not 'immune' from shilling with a sniper engine bid, you could still end up paying more than you otherwise would have

Can I Have A Grade Please
Paulus replied to pies's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Good price for the grade too Colin, nice one Are you aiming for a completist date run of Viccy pennies, or trying to acquire some attractive high grade examples regardless of date/variety? You seem to have bought some really nice examples over the last year or so -
It happens a lot. I think it's called bid stacking and is somehow supposed to deter other bidders from trying to beat the current high bid. That's the opposite effect that a shiller would want! Exactly my thought too! A shiller would NOT want to win the item. And of course a shiller would not want to put other bidders off either - obviously! But isn't there a school of thought that if an item has lots of bids it makes it somehow more attractive (to some)? I have seen sellers add info like 'this coin has 31 watchers' etc to the item, description ...
