Another quote from the thread: "I took a great course on toning at the ANA many years ago, presented by Bob Campbell, he said always look for attractive toning, and that original toning always follows the color spectrum of the rainbow, in nature, if the colors are in a different order then it is most likely artificial toning and not worth buying. As to how much premium to pay? That is totally up to the buyer. Some of the monster toned Morgans can be astronomical priced when compared to a price sheet." Colours of the rainbow?? But coins don't tone red, then orange, yellow, green, blue and violet, do they? They start a pinkish grey and go a bluish grey with occasional gold highlights. Of if dipped they seem to go a bit yellower. And eventually, black. But a progression? Not in my (admittedly limited) experience. I suspect there's less science than wishful thinking myself. After all, who is going to admit to paying over the odds for an AT coin? Attractive? Then it must be natural (they tell themselves...) A "course on toning"? Good grief, I hope he simply means he "attended a presentation" ! It's all 'Emporer's new clothes' stuff to me, and we are shouting louder and louder that it is all total nonsense!

Amazed at the lengths date collectors will go to to fill a gap (unless I'm missing something?) ... this is not even Fair in my book! 1839 HC

Never, although I have only 6 year's experience. But for such a common issue that is enough to tell me this isn't the real deal. I have trauled through many many dealers' websites, and auctions, and eBay, on a daily basis, you don't see those this side of the pond. It's like sticking a decent conker in vinegar and then in the oven, you will win a few battles but will be found out eventually. -
Baines' cross the highlight for me. Like Peter says, I suspect relatively quiet tonight cos of the footie on mainstream TV, and an important game for a change, and lots of goalmouth action in an international, also for a change!! Now you can look forward to cheering on England when Liverpool finish 5th! A very warm welcome Conor! Looking forward to hearing about/seeing what you have, and what you may be interested in focussing on if you decide to expand the collection!

It's horrible, AT for me too. Keep on winding up those septic tanks Peter! Don't know what CGS' view on AT is ... -

Early example of a he-she? The only clear legend is REX - which is a bit of a giveaway. No? Indeed so, should be enough of a clue, unless back then you could not change your regnal attribution (following a sex change)! I found it interesting to learn that under the new change to the royal law of succession, the first born is the first in line to the throne (rather than the first born male). If this rule had been in force in Victoria's time we would have has Kaiser Wilhelm as our king (Kaiser BIll!!) (rather than Edward VII), since he was the first born of Victoria's first born, who died before Victoria. Wonder how different the 'Great War' would have been then!

Whats the W3? Sometimes lazy and abbreviate, sorry Asumel (is that your real name? (lol). W3 = William III G3 = George III Coinery = Stuart Azda = Dave There was a famous shipwreck (The Association) which had a huge quantity of coins on board when it sank, including much Charles II (of England) and pieces of 8

Sorry Dave, I edited my post, I would only be interested in an English counter-marked one!

For a decent one with a Common mintmark, maybe £50-£100 depending on grade/age/region of South,America, rarer types will obviously cost more Realey? (see what I did there!) - I would have thought more like £250 in a strong Fine (if you're lucky) and up and up from there! (for a George 3 emergency issue I mean!) Were they your own coins P & TG? Very nice if they were! Not mine sadly Stuart, haven't quite decided to do about all those G3 emergency issue and B of E coins yet!
-
The submitter could well be the TPGC itself? You know how CGS love to rattle out those mint state 1967 pennies! That's very true Stuart! I have a very too trusting nature and tend to take things at face value too much! Both London Coins and The London Coin Company churn out slabbed 'Cameo' 'Early Strikes' and the like by the hundred as soon as they can obtain them from whatever mint!
-
I believe they were 8 Reales from Spain and Spanish owned South American countries, as used for emergency coinage for George III and over-stamped with our king's head. Equivalent to roughly 5 shillings or a crown, but varied slightly with the value of silver. Like this one:
-
I am just wondering what 'pretend' process the TPG must be going through to 'authenticate' it and 'grade' it! What are the terms of reference?? All seems very meaningless to me, but as long as the submitter is happy ... !

Coin Robbery
Paulus replied to HistoricCoinage's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Jeez I hope Lloyd doesn't suffer in any way, he seems like a real gent -
Not selling it, it's a keeper! Posted as a guide for Neil (and anyone else) to look out for a similar block WW to go with my scipt WW, and as an example of a well struck REV! I am selling my low-mid grade coins (almost everything below VF, can't stand the sight of them any more!), duplicates, and anything that doesn't fit with my ESC type focus ...
-
On the other hand, while I wouldn't pay £424 either, there is a phenomenal difference in scarcity between VF (or sub-EF) examples, and genuine EF or better. My own example (MUST upgrade!) is definitely sub-EF : 1836 halfc obv.jpg Interestingly I have had more high grade block capitals in the last 10 years than high grade script and Spink claims block is rarer!! Just thought I would share that although maybe irrelevant ;-) I hope you will be offering high grade block WWs for less than their equivalent in script then Neil? Paulus you never know might do you a really good deal on the next one I get in ;-) Keep me in mind, hopefully I will have the readies when the time comes! In selling mode at the mo, but hopefully not for too long and not selling the very best coins from my main focus! Here's my (script) reverse, would be looking for a similar or better grade in block: That is a very strong reverse is the obverse equally as good??Sadly not, perhaps it's virtually impossible to have both, as seems to be the case with some issues! I guess there is only a certain thickness of silver to work with (unless that is a ridiculously ignorant comment?): Photo shadow on the truncation but it is script!

Obverse isn't even EF, reverse is better though.Cleaned/dipped perhaps also I wouldn't grade either side as EF, tons of wear in the centre of the reverse ...

I often wonder myself how often we have bidded against each other in various auctions. Whats your ebay name Peter? You can PM if you don't wish to divulgeMost of us snipe though, don't we? So knowing user names won't help????? Nope. If I want the coin I'm there, 7 seconds to go... Isn't that what sniping is? You don't have to use a sniping tool!
-
Now Peter knows about it, we'll have to pay him off too! on a public forum too!! I have to confess I am shocked!!!!!
-
This was their response to my request that they attribute the coin as we all think they should have: " ... although there is evidence of an underlying letter to the right of the upright of the M in MAG, the underlying letter is not conclusive, and in the absence of the remaining parts of the inverted M or any other letter being visible we are unable to attribute this as a new type."
-
On a non-CGS basis, right? Do you mean removed from slab before despatched?! I am certainly not expecting any premium from forum members just because some of my coins are slabbed, you lot know better! No, I meant at non-CGS slab prices!! That's what I meant too, all my coins are sold on raw merit, the few that have passed through CGS hands will have a little extra authenticity provenance and that is all! The prices CGS attach to the coins they slab are usually Spink or above, and could be used for insurance purposes ... but I have seen them exceeded on eBay!
-
On balance I remain pleased with the offering CGS have, and have submitted another small batch on 30/9. So for those of you who still have the appetite for it, here are 6 more coins to guess at the grades CGS will assign (or, if you spot any problems, which ones they might reject!!). You might want to guess at the grade number (1-100) or just the broad grade (GF, VF, EF, etc) 2 of the coins they have already assigned varieties unlisted in ESC or Spink to, and you may also like to try and spot which those are. You can of course hunt them down on the CGS web site, but to discourage you I have not included the UINs this time round! All comments and guesses very welcome, I have found the comments to the last two trial batches extremely interesting! Coin 1: G4 Shilling:

lol I hear that 'Mrs C' has a few gold and silver coins tucked under the floorboards!
