  1. On a non-CGS basis, right? Do you mean removed from slab before despatched?! I am certainly not expecting any premium from forum members just because some of my coins are slabbed, you lot know better!
  2. Don't be sorry, have had a replacement fitted and all looking good, just gonna take time!
  3. Inbox nearly empty now! I am so psychologically attached to my avatar 6d its ridiculous, it's as if it would signal the end if I ever sold it! Partly because it was one of my first purchases and an eBay buy, so beginner's luck ... So many compliments about it, and being so small the pics show it off better than the coin in hand! Currently sat here with an ankle that looks like a pepperoni pizza with extra olives, that has gone horribly wrong! So sensible offers on any coins you know I own (apart from the E7 6d) might be sympathetically received!
  4. oh bugger I will clear it!
  5. Hey Stuart, I hadn't realised CGS was quite such a sore point with you! They have slabbed less than 30,000 coins in total, in my mind they don't influence anything more than a very small niche market ... I have submitted 3 small batches, 25 coins in all, more as an experiment than anything, and these 'varieties' have been an unexpected bi-product! The few I have sold have made FAR more than they would in the raw on eBay ... a 1900 shilling in no better than aEF I sold for £151 2 weeks ago, I doubt I would have got £40 for it without the CGS tag ... (it went to a Japanese guy ...) I have been on half salary for the last year now, working from home on customer support for a UK 'Performance Management' software company, hence the absence of new impressive purchases and the need to sell some. You may remember, the reason I couldn't go the the Midland 'meet' was because of ankle replacement surgery, I am now recovering from that (going ok-ish with some scary bits), partly hence I can spend a bit more time on my hobby and posting on here, if not on acquiring more coins! Might have to offer some of my prized coins to members before going to eBay soon, needs must!
  6. Here is a close up of the potential 1707 M/W variant, Rob seemed fairly sure and I agree with him ... I am not that bothered, but would like coins to be correctly attributed!
  7. I wondered what people thought about it from a customer perspective ... I am not in to 'micro-varieties', although the distinction between macro and micro is a grey area and up to the individual ... on the one hand I am pleased if they spot an already known macro variety that I hadn't, or a major/macro variety previously unknown or at any rate unllisted in the major guides, which might appear soon. On the other hand, for me, if they decide to create a brand new CGS variety, as they did for an 1825 Lion shilling I acquired from Michael Gouby (confirming what Michael thought), they list it as 'Finest Known 1/1' and don't give it a value! Which can limit the market when selling, and could affect the price in both directions ... very interested in what others think on this, especially as in the hammered market every coin is 'unique'! I know that CGS slabbed coins are a tiny fraction of the market, and will probably always remain so, but I think this aspect of what they are doing is interesting ...

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I'm guessing you'd lose a lot of the resolution though, wouldn't you?Yes, but it's better than nothing. Really? That's strange. On Macs you can capture an on-screen image and you lose none of the resolution. (None of the DISPLAYED resolution that is - if the displayed image is 300ppi then yes, you'd lose that, but since the images on eBay are for records only, you wouldn't them any higher than your monitor can display anyway. In other words, 72 or 90 ppi will remain 72 or 90 ppi forever, however many times you capture it with a screenprint.) I get very good results using the PrtScn method. All of the pics in my CGS Trial threads are done using this method, and take about 1 minute each to produce. I could right-click and save the images, but it is quicker and easier to PrtScn them seeing as I want to crop them and convert them to png files in Paint.net anyway.
  9. Unlisted in ESC and Spink but I think well enough known ...Have you spotted the variety? Looks like the BP without stops, cant see the other one though, unless the missing serif on the farthing. No stop after B (but there is after P), the other variety they have found I can't quite make out myself and it is on the 1728 ... The G,was looking at 23837 which has a more progressive die crack through the garter and shield,so it looks like yours is an earlier coin.On saying that 23837 was given a grade of 60,and in my opinion yours is better. They are currently stating: 'G and E of GEORGIVS struck over lower, weak G and E'With all due respect to the submissions, but I am just wondering whether they (CGS) have suddenly spotted a new commercial arm to their existence, and are exploiting it to its full potential?Interesting thought. They would not attribute my 1707 shilling as 'M over inverted M in MAG', as many of us, including Rob (who sold it to me) thought it was, and it seemed a lot clearer than this 1728. I guess there are pros and cons to them doing this, would be an interesting debate?

And if all else fails you can use the PrtScn button to capture the full screen then crop down to the image(s) in something like Paint.net and save
  13. I thought someone might ask that! Thankfully it's got some provenance, being ex Spink September 1991. I got it from an online dealer in Jan 2012. The seller was: Michael E. KennyChairman at Numismatic Society of Ireland

  18. Sticky matress = difficulty in rousing oneself in the mornings. Fortunately nothing whatever to do with newlyweds! When standing in a hole it's best to stop digging. lol, definitely!!
  19. For that price you did EXTREMELY well! You could pay twice that for a coin like it. I agree, that's a bargain price!
  20. Well here's my 8 string (I think) effort, trying to decide whether the 7 string qualifies for my type collection!
  21. Hi Paulus it suggests that the number of Harp strings were used for Die identification and that the number of strings varies through out the George II shilling series. Thanks, I find it surprising then that one/both aren't listed as varieties (in ESC and Spink), any idea on relative scarcity?
