Fake Cromwell Crown
Paulus replied to numismatist's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
In order to deceive an unsuspecting buyer. A genuine coin would sell for 4 figures. What i don't get is if its not contemporary is why they'd sell it, even ebay has rules on that So Dave you think the estimate might reflect what an unscrupulous buyer might pay for a copy he thought he could resell as genuine? -
Fake Cromwell Crown
Paulus replied to numismatist's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Trouble is that if these types of fakes sell for theses prices,it will give them a marketable value, other than the melt value, which in turn, would in my opinion make them more acceptable in the wider coin collecting community. If the quality of this coin and the newer gothics' are anything to go by,and these are made for a few pound more than what the Silver content is valued at, I would expect to see more turning up over the next few years,or even more common coins, anything over a hundred pound and they have doubled their money. But if it's a modern Chinese copy you can just order your own on the net for around £50, if memories from a previous post are correct ... so while modern replicas already have a market I don't know why they would ever command a price much over melt ... maybe I am missing something! However I totally share the view that if they are very good and passed off as genuine, then that already is/and will increasingly be a major problem -

What surprises me if it it is a non-contemporary copy they have an estimate of £250 - £750 on it ... why on earth would someone pay that sort of money for it? -

Rob, I don't like the latest version of Photobucket either but you can still click (single left click) inside the IMG field and control + V into here, as I just have: Capturing your image and reposting via photobucket took less than 1 minute, I still think it is the best method but there may well be better alternatives to Photobucket! -
To be fair I had asked them to re-examine my 1707 Plumes Shilling to see if they agreed it was an 'M over inverted M in MAG' *soon after I submitted the coins), and I got this reply just this morning: Hello PaulThank you for the e-mail.UIN 28559 has been re-examined and although there is evidence of an underlying letter to the right of the upright of the M in MAG, the underlying letter is not conclusive, and in the absence of the remaining parts of the inverted M or any other letter being visible we are unable to attribute this as a new type. Many thanksPaul Redford(CGS UK) See what you think, it is UIN 28559

I would echo Benny's advice, I can't find it on their site with or without the W ... they may be busy at the mo with few staff and an upcoming auction (not to mention my coins to completely complete!), but they will take the call and answer your question! And how Long has that been now since you Sent them in and then from finalisied grade Status? 6-7 weeks now since I sent them in and 2-3 weeks sitting at the final stage ... Ms Cetin (sic) phoned me 4 weeks ago to clarify something and told me to expect around 6 weeks, but the deal as we know is now up to 90 days ... maybe it's this mysterious 3rd grader up north someone mentioned that delays things? Sure is a factor for repeat business, even though I am not desperate to have them back for resale ...

Sorry Paulus, but you don't seem to understand the bidding screen either. At the instant in question ie 4 mins after bidding opened (22:00:23 on the 22-Aug-13) the only bidder was a***i(1282). Therefore the current winning bid at that point was the opening bid ie £0.01. Fairy Nuff Nick, I see what you mean!

I believe Stuart is correct:

Have you tried taking the battery out and popping it back in after a minute or 2?

Good one, there will be no bids no doubt, graded AU50 on the new SexySilver Scale of 0 - 10000!

Good Fine Mule £1,250 Any Takers?

Always makes me chuckle when you see the suggestion that a coin might be MORE collectible because it is in a LOWER grade! Maybe the Americans will introduce AW (Artificial Wear)! -

Welcome Jessica! This particular thread may not quite be showing off the Forum discussions in their very best light!

Not my area but I will have a stab at a grade of VF (perhaps a little better?), and Spink 2013 values one of these at £525 in VF. So, if genuine, a good price to pay might be £400-£450?

The NGC images are rubbish. You cannot discern any of the many scratches and surface marks from their images. If I were them, I'd be too embarrassed to put them on my website. It can't help that NGC take the photos after they have entombed the coin in a perspex slab!

Mostly I can just about understand the bidding and prices paid on the Bay (okay, some of the time), but this barely fine common shilling is hard to understand (i.e. why is it worth shilling this shilling or bidding this high - and there seems to be both shillings afoot!) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290959790788?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648

Thanks, I must say I wouldn't want to spend a grand on a coin that had been tampered with in any way, especially a 'star' coin like Pies is after, I just wouldn't feel quite the same about it What about if it is the only available example? Good question, so far I haven't dealt in such rarities being a very broad type collector, any varieties have come to me kind of accidentally - I guess if I wanted a particular type/date that very rarely became available I would have to consider whatever came on the market, even if (inevitably) less than perfect in many ways. And of course even with my broad focus on milled ESC types, what will I do if offered a 1798 D&M shilling that has a dubious past? I don't know!!

lol he has my vote! Will it be inflation adjusted each year Scott? -
I think I am getting better at spotting dipped/polished/cleaned silver, but what suggests that this penny is 'chemically dipped' ? I would be interested to know the tell-tale signs ...

Indeed, not sure I can see the 7 (or the 8)! Here is Stuart's ebay link - what a lazy git (only joking, I know you are using Dave's eyePhone! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360715046072?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D360715046072%26_rdc%3D1&autorefresh=true Our confused Buckinghamshire-cum-Norfolk compadre may have got this overdate correct however: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310720315858?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648 One of the clearest early milled silver overdates I have seen, and his grading is okay (but it's horrible I don't want it by the way!)

On a related note, I wonder if any of our members would voice an opinion on this ... how on earth do some dealers, many on eBay, list so much new stock of, say, early milled silver (my area of interest), every week? Where are they getting it from on such a regular basis?? Bucks coins (Peter, restrain yourself) has plenty of new stock all the time, I'm pretty sure it's not from auctions every week ... yes much of it is over-graded near fine stuff, but where does it come from? He seems to have tons of it, more than anyone on eBay, and seems to turn it over, how does he do that?
