  1. Hi

I'll post it if you email it to me, pdwhittingham60@hotmail.co.uk

    Cheers

  2. Maybe just me but I wouldn't go anywhere near that, perhaps just based on the presentation and the BIN prices, but also instinct screams NO!!
  3. He!s not the largest coin dealer in the world.....he clearly has no idea how to handle proof coins...he must be nearly 90......absolute twaddle..... RChris, you have been warned!
  4. Staggered that a supposedly reputable dealer would handle a supposedly proof $1500 coin without gloves or other protection ... that is 'proof' enough for me that it is not worth what he is asking for it!
  5. I've re-calibrated, re-counted, re-synched the whole forum and have removed the server stored cache files and theoretically it should be fine now! At least, there should certainly be no more disappearing threads, but as for the confusion in the browser bar between predecimal.com/forum and british-coins.com/forum I'm still personally experiencing problems with that. Anyone else having similar issues? This could cause people to become logged out. For the last two or three days (for me) it has been consistently predecimal.com, and there haven't been any problems. Likewise for me

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

lol, perhaps the guy is trying his luck, crafted in the trenches of the Falklands? He's actually quite honest in his description. He made it himself in the style of 'trench art', so fair enough. I hadn't spotted that, fair enough indeed.
  7. I totally agree. They can also be less bloody sloppy and not get foreign objects, dust, etc onto the coins they encapsulate Or fingerprints!!!!!!!
  8. I couldn't agree more Stuart, I really don't believe that those that collect (especially) US slabs and grades 67-70 have the same collecting urge as we do ... which is fine, each to their own investing/collecting criteria, but right now we are increasingly (if only gradually when it comes to British / hammered) chasing after the same coins. If it was a totally separate sphere of collecting we wouldn't give a damn, would we??

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I wonder if there is anyone out there who specifically collects tooled coins? You never know ... mind you, like with those inscribed, enamelled or 'love token' ones, I don't know how you can tell whether it is vaguely contemporary, or was done last week! Has anyone else seen those so-called 'trench art' 'coin pots' that keep popping up from the same seller on eBay? Quick way to make a fast buck??

    Need your opinion

Have you got a link to the auction goomolique?
  13. And what a good choice that would be!! Don't trust this man. His name belies his true character. He accumulates farthings so prodigiously that you won't get a look in. Collect something else. I don't care what as long as it is something other than pennies - too many penny collectors at the moment. Halfpennies seem to be overlooked for no good reason, try them! (they are cheaper too!)

Good Fine? Attractive too IMO. I know this might sound really stupid but what does IMO mean? Any ideas what it might be worth? Sorry John, In My Opinion (beauty being in the eye of the beholder!). This website: http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/values/index.html#index suggests that you might have to pay a dealer £100 for one in Fine condition (Spink 2013 states the same). That one for me is slightly better than fine, but others might have different opinions as to grade and value!

  17. I have tried a couple of others, this is certainly by far the best I have come across and the only one I use regularly! Welcome along, what is your area of interest?
  18. London Coins is grading this CGS 80 crown as "choice aFDC". Bit optimistic with the marks in the field? Also, the grading table on the CGS website equates CGS 91 to 94 as aFDC (not that I agree some of the conversions in the table in the first place) The June 2013 Auction catalogue from London Coins themselves has a 'conversion table' at the back, which shows that, in their (or someone's) opinion, CGS 80 equates to Choice UNC, and confirms that, as Sword points out, a coin has to reach CGS 91 to be attributed 'aFDC'. I also find the description "choice aFDC" a bit of an oxymoron, mind you there a many of those around!
  19. The US one sure looks better, but I couldn't possibly rely on their grading number if in the market for buying it .. what's the 'Cameo' bit all about again?!

    DNW TODAY

I have to recant and hold my head in shame. Just got an invoice for two of the three items I wanted - I shall soon be the proud owner of the Nicholson 1689 halfpenny and a nice 1717 sixpence. Failed to get a 1839 halfcrown but it was a crap one anyway, so not tto worried. lol well done Dave, must have been a pleasant surprise!
  21. There's not a bag of them but about 25 of them were struck (forged) during that period in the 70's/80's by the same person(s)....who, I am told, is alledgedly still around. Do you know why he did not make more? If he could make such good fakes in the 70's / 80's, then I dread to think what will happen in 50 years time. Nothing given he should be pushing up the daisies I didn't mean him, but what forgers in gerneral can do in the future. What worry me is that one day, forgeries will be so good that they can no longer be distinguished from the real thing by visual inspection or weight. Then will all rare coins have to be sold in "slabs" after expensive analysis have been done in labs? Scary! Bear in mind that a few years ago, people were willing to pay a few hundred for a superbly done silver proof repro of a Gothic Crown. Maybe that is the future - affordable repros for those who can't afford originals? Better by far than fakes IMO. I wasn't aware that people were willing to pay such money for a repro. For me, the main attraction of coin collecting is the feeling of owning some history. I like admiring 19 century unc currency coins thinking how lucky they have been. A repro has little more attraction than a photo of a real coin as far as I am conerned! Modern fakes are of course revolting but contemporary fakes can potentially be interesting (not that I collect them). Just one question - how much would you run to for an expertly done 1933 penny? eBay seems to prove they fetch well into three figures. Two figures, if I could resell it for three!
  22. Welcome to the Forum! Not medieval, I believe they are all farthings of either Charles I or James I, although which monarch and which types I cannot make out! Coinery will doubtless contribute and identify them in a jiffy! Dates would be the first half of the 17th century.

This is the auction pic of the coin I won, as usual I am sure there are better available at better prices if only I had more patience and a flexible budget but I am delighted with it, if it is at least as good 'in hand' - love the toning and eye appeal!

Everyone should know how much they bid, so everyone should know if they won or not unless it is at their maximum Can't see any final prices on the site . Try this link Danz: http://www.dnw.co.uk/auction-archive/prices-realised/results.php?auction_id=280
