Help with some hammered
Paulus replied to Fubar's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I've been asked to describe and value some coins and a few are giving me some problems. This looks like it could be an Edward VI fine issue shilling from 1551-53 but why the curled and perfectly round edge. The only thing I can think of is that it's been mounted at some time but has this devalued it totally? It's 34.28mm in diameter but I have no weight. Any help much appreciated. Regards Kris Hi Fubar/Kris Looks like a shilling, mm y, Spink 2482. Someone else might be able to answer your rim question, but I don't think it would be through mounting ... It is very worn and that I think will determine it's value, somewhere in the range of £30-£50 would be my guess -
Got a catalog through the door from Colin Cooke today, they are selling a very high grade 1905 HC for, wait for it, £5,500!!!! I know that's what the price guides would indicate, but wow, guess I had never seen one for sale before!

Well, there's a stroke of luck! How about thumbnails on a grid? I'd be happy to draw the grid... On second thoughts, division by denomination might suit most people here a little better. Seems to be a lot of denomination collectors here. Navigation is everything! I'm not sure how you lot would go with this or whether I've got a wrong idea. But I wondered, most coin sites I've been on are always arranged under Reign, then under Value, and finally in order of year oldest first. I could do most sites do. But then have it so that only one coin is listed for that year of that value. Ie Ed VII, Penny, 1903. And this coin shown would be the highest voted as being the best grade? Could then have a link or even click the image, and have it open a new page. Which has all uploaded coins, along with who uploaded it, how many votes and what its grade is believed to be? Something like that? Sounds perfect! -

That would be a great idea and source of information for people on here like myself. I'm a PHP web developer by job, but my problem is I'm absolutely terrible at any kind of design. If someone would for example draw a design of how it would/should look. Ie with what should be shown, and so on. I might be able to chuck something out in my commute travels between work and home. Just a possibility. I know years ago there was a site, web developers usually slag it off due to bag practises they teach, but they do teach you the basics and its free. I believe it was www.htmlgoodies.com also www.w3schools.com is quite good for learning basics. How would you determine if one is better than the other too? The design of Accumulator's site works for me! Perhaps we have a vote - or if that's a little too long-winded given the potential number of dates types and varieties involved, people could offer up what they consider to be a high grade example for exhibiting on the site, then someone could say 'I think mine is better', post the pics on here, and seek consensus if necessary as to whether the previously depicted example should be replaced? I think it would be fun, healthy competition and a great resource. -

Have you got one, or do you want one. I can't seem to find one listed anywhere...spink, freeman, peck? Am I missing a few pages? I'm possibly missing something, but the last ones were minted in 1936 ... weren't they?? -
Yes that's ridiculous, GF/NVF?

What do peeps think of this one? Has anyone used this seller? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1861-UK-GREAT-BRITAIN-VICTORIA-FARTHING-UNC-LOW-START-NO-RESERVE-/121060486133?pt=US_World_Coins&hash=item1c2fc46bf5 Quite tempted by it, but someone might come on and say it's been 'spangled' or some other term I have never heard of, being new to acquiring some pretty bits of copper and bronze

1861 Farthing on eBay

I expect you have a choice example already Peter, good news being you wont be bidding! I'll probably bid up to around £65 as it has great eye appeal for me, doubt that that will win it though! You might be suprised. However I'm aware of the US contingent buying a common coin from ColinCooke for a few £ and slabbing them. I buy raw whenever I can to pop straight into the cabinet/tray with MY description/grade. I can see increasingly that a slabbed coin will sell for more than un-slabbed, especially in the US, and ceteris paribus, of course ... what I don't get at all is how so many low value/low grade coins are being slabbed ... CGS charge £11.99 per coin minimum plus 2-way postage, anyone shed any light on the economic viability of getting a coin slabbed that is worth less than, say, £30?? -

Thanks again, I might have a dabble later! Everyone else, keep off!! You are being worryingly normal tonight Peter! If you had a sneaky lottery win that Mrs P didn't need to know about, and you negotiated £4k-ish for the 2005 HC with CC, would you go for it? I know you want one!! I am on line in Barbados.Don't tell Mrs Peter. I'm at a stage when I would prefer a true UNC ED7 rather than overpriced key dates.A type collector away from 1/4d's Good man, I won't tell her, she is in the kitchen at the mo fixing me a snack, so we should be ok One reason I prefer top grade types to a parade of dates is when you show people your collection, no non-numismatist is going to be wowed by a mid grade rare date or variety! What you mean you show them to other people Rarely and only after a CRB check! -

Not quite enough legend variety to attract you to it though Scott, I hope! I wonder if there really is a 'FARTING' out there somewhere?? There certainly is, but you have to read it phonetically....there is a Lauer model farthing which has the legend FARHTING And by the way that is a 5 berry portrait, and an attractive looking coin, that will have a nice red tone to it, and as Peter says underlying lustre...did you get it? Oops not gone yet!! A few hours yet! Reminds me of the Kraftwerk song, 'FAHRT FAHRT FAHRT, AUF DER AUTOBAHN' -

Just seen it in my catalogue. Absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, Neil doesn't put the new stock on his website for a few days, so we'll have to wait a few days to see a really good pic of it. edit: that's if it's not already sold by then !!! The coin in question is now on their web site, and described as 'Choice EF+/GEF pleasing and problem free.' -
I completely agree with Generic Lad's response, let's see some pics and you will get the best free and unbiased advice there is!
