I saw that over there. I read about spittal and tinfoil on hammered.(Not to rub) What's a clad coin? Is it something an archaeologist pulls out of the wall of a 20thC house? Very good question, I hope I don't have one!
-
I prefer to see it that way. Although, I'll run with any method as long as it produces an interesting date. Besides which it's more unusual to get date "anomalies" (for want of a better word), which involves the entire year, rather than just the last two digits of it. 12.12.12 is unique, and doesn't work with 2012 But yes, yours is another palindrome. There are also some interesting hours, minutes and seconds palindromes that occur every day!! In a mischievous mood, sorry!

I've also just ordered a book and a new digital caliper. Does anyone have a copy of Challis 'Tudor Coinage' ? And well done for posting at 12:12, even if it was on the 13th!

What's going on, Paulus, no competition please! Lion RAMPANT Lennox type 4 S2680 [c] I had this one in my watch list as I thought it might be counterfeit...I never had time to sort it out, so it went by! Tim Everson in his latest adenda to his 2007 book has a newly discovered example listed of a Lennox 4 'lion rampant' counterfeit [EXR] Will get the PC out later and have a look! Brilliant, thanks Stuart! I see it in my Spink copy now ... be nice to know if it is counterfeit, half hope that it is! It just caught my eye, glad you weren't bidding too! I like to have a smattering of other examples to go with my milled silver! Alas, it's certainly not a 'known' counterfeit! The counterfeit had missing colon stop after HIB (no space for it apparently)! So, Lennox Type 4 (1622/3-1625) obverse 2, reverse 2 - Everson 48b, BMC (Peck) 103. Importantly, it should have a die axis of 180 degrees. Welcome to the world of hammered copper! A very common type by the looks of it, I'll confirm the die axis when it arrives ... thanks again! Actually, I've just noticed from the images that it IS 180 degrees! Bet you never thought you'd get excited about a coin being a possible counterfeit? For ease of use, and as a great catalogue all round, I can heartily recommend Everson's book...especially if you are going to start scouring the 'bay for the rarities! Not sure if any of the dealers on here have one but, if not, you can get a copy here if you're interested? http://www.galata.co.uk/store.asp?storeAction=showDetail&stockID=1136&stockMasterCategoriesID=8 You mean a genuine one has a die axis of 0 degrees? I thought you meant the opposite, sorry!

Good luck Saxon, please let us know what you get for it! I'm guessing £80-£100, good luck Saxon and, yes, let us know, or link us the sale? I am guessing slightly more, this is the link I think! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200860215136?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648 -

It might make £100-£150 on eBay with that nice portrait? What were your other finds? -
Grading? value maybe? several coins!
Paulus replied to Hello17's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
1887 shilling was under £10. 1674 = £50? although i like the coin, thats a sweet price. The Edward I would be a very cool plectrum. Brian May uses a sixpence. I think it's in quite a collectable condition. it's slighty worn but all is there and nothing is missing To do that would be like cleaning a 1919kn penny, which was one of my worst mistakes. i never intended, just got put into the wrong pile. You keep them in piles?!! Yikes!!!! -
Maybe it's a trick the brain plays, like on this Quite Interesting clip?

lol what's a 'Plattipus shiller'? Ask Dave - it's his favourite subject, and favourite person.. I sometimes despair at the work you put into people like Platt and this numpty *surrey coins* only for people to continually buy from them. I just hope no one here has done or else i'm coming to your door with a pair of nutcrackers, there will be tears The other surprising Thing is that surrey has had only 2, Negs in 12 months. Obviously some very uneducated people out there. Oh BTW Peter, he has 2 of those AUNC 1874s, http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3a7c0d3559 Anither high grade http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1878-Half-Crown-High-grade-Rare-/271112021827?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item3f1f892743 and if you look through the rest, apparently all of George V silver is rare dates Just had a quick squiz, they really are laughable aren't they! This one is 'choice uncirculated' apparently!! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1893-Three-pence-Choice-uncirculated-Very-Rare-R2-in-ESC-/271109865861?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item3f1f684185

Well said Ski, I find myself agreeing with pretty much everything you have said. I am a collector of only 5 years' standing, and sense a lot of 'emperor's new clothes' type nonsense about a lot of what I see out there slabbing wise. I think I would find it quite depressing to be a collector of US coins and virtually forced down this route, in fact I am sure I wouldn't even have been bitten by the bug in the first place! I sense an investor attitude rather than a genuine collector attitude to it all ... but it's not as if, for sure with English coins, the slab is a real guarantee of grade OR authenticity, at least as a form of provenence to subsequent custodians of the coin. If ever there was an area where there was potential for vested interest, conflict of interest, hype, marketing and hijacking of pure historic and innocent collecting pleasure to spoil this hobby, for me this is it. Along with forgeries proliferating further, ubiquitous slabs would extinguish my passion within a short period if they became almost compulsory as part of the coin trading process. If all my collectable pieces were confined to slabs I am sure I would be admiring my collection only on Photobucket (other on-line photo sites are available), where I would be able to see them in more detail than I could through a slab's protection, and I think that experience would soon become artificial/superficial for me ... and that would probably signal the end of my love affair with the whole deal. You are only left with the knowledge that 'oh yes, I own that coin', not the tactile experience you have with your coin collection in the raw. Another old fart's view maybe, but crucial to me, I cannot see me collecting coffins, they might as well be in a bank vault and just an heirloom!

For CGS it would be £119.90 plus £15 P+P for 10 coins....(taken from their website, no mention of reductions for bulk.) ski Thanks Ski

Being lazy I guess, but does anyone know how much it costs to have say 10 coins worth £100-£200 each slabbed by a TPG? Do any of them offer a low cost option for bulk lower value coins? Sometimes I see coins listed for sale where I wonder whether it would cost more to have them slabbed that the value of the coin! I have only ever sent one coin to be slabbed and that was to have it authenticated, it was rejected as anticipated and money well spent as they (CGS) gave reasons and I was refunded by the seller as a result. If I needed to sell my collection in a financial crisis I would seriously consider getting a dozen or so of my higher grade higher value coins slabbed for sale to the American market, it would just make financial sense I think.
