I don't believe the age or rarity of early milled should influence the grading, I would also have to say Fair at best

Copper, 'toned' as only the US can?
Paulus replied to Accumulator's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I would be happy to suggest it! How do we explain (for example) that, if they are all naturally toned, none of us have one like that in our collections? Or do we? I have a few beautifully toned coins but not like that!! -
Like this shilling Nice toning Thanks Gary, that's mine, yey!! I don't buy to sell (unless there is a snip on fleabay) but I do like to know that I wouldn't lose on the coins I have if I had to sell them, and I think that is definitely the case with this one, in fact I think if I got it graded and slabbed it could easily go for 300 + at auction or in the US ... Of course I know that is very small potatoes for some of the high rollers on here!

The Queens Diamond Jubilee...
Paulus replied to Mongo's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Watched the concert on and off too, and feeling the urge to say something I have felt for a long time ... great lyrics and music, but Sir Elton and Sir Paul can't actually sing very well at all!!!! There, off to the tower with me! -

Just an observation, you thought the coin was in Fine (I think all are agreed it is MUCH better than that) and yet you paid a Near Very Fine price for it ... do you have any up-to-date price guides?
-
Maybe not, but you have got yourself a bargain there. I will offer you £30? See recent posts on grading ... For Eddie 7 Florins, notwithstanding scratches, edge knocks etc, good hair and ear detail on the obverse and a clear date and face on Brittania on the reverse are some of the things to look for. As well as that, go for eye appeal, you have to like the coins in your collection, and enjoy the hobby

Welcome Pies!! That's a very nice coin, much better than Fine I would say! If you paid Fine price you did incredibly well!! I would great as Good Very Fine, let's see if I get shouted down! Nothing wrong with the pics either, if you want them much bigger (in size and bytes) than the site limit, a lot of the members here (me included) upload them to a site like Photobucket and embed the links. I would value that coin at £40-£60, can I ask what you paid?

1st bust variety £525, £1750, £7500 Guinea head £1500, £4500, - Don't worry, I won't be challenging for that one. Thanks Rob, why not? Oh I expect you have a best known EF stashed away! Because there is better available, though EF silver elephant below is virtually unobtainable. I have PM'd you! -

I'd split the difference and rate it Fair. No argument with the rest though. I wonder whether with some there is an interpretation that Fine is the lowest grade? Just a thought ...

Advice on coin prices for a newbie?
Paulus replied to Mongo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Thanks Debbie! Empire coins?.... DOH! even more to confuse me Can anyone please explain what "detector find" implies when in a coin description? Is it a good or bad thing? If to be believed, the coin was discovered using a metal detector ... not quite sure why sellers state that, possibly to explain the grubbiness or otherwise unattractive condition, lack of provenance, avoid comebacks, make the buyer think it's a bargain? Getting too cynical now!! -
Advice on coin prices for a newbie?

Thanks! I like farthings too, and pennnies, and halfpennies, and sixpences etc. etc.! I think that I will just buy any coins that I really like the look of at the moment, then down the line a bit see how I feel about specializing in certain denominations. I might go for a nice grade coin of every denomination (that I can afford) and see them in the flesh, im sure there will be one that really catches my imagination Or you might try an example from every monarch. Then an example of every denomination from every monarch. Then every variety. And every year. Then upgrade the Fs to VF+. Help me someone, PLEASE help me!! -

I can second all of that, and you are quite right to be wary of postage prices, especially for low value coins. There is lots of great advice on here, including the perils of buying on eBay! I can recommend this link as a great ready-reckonner for milled common types: http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/values/ It can be a very rewarding and addictive hobby, welcome along! -

Unfortunately Peter, you, I (and I would hazard a guess everybody else on this forum) are the same, but we are the 10% minority in this country. The underclass (pondlife if you will) believe in copious amounts of alcohol, Ciggies, drugs, social handouts, free housing and a lack of soap. They believe that the god of take what you want, when you want was the creator of all things. As for getting on with people, well the only "getting on" they can manage is getting on top of the opposite sex to spawn more of the same. Bring back eugenics I say, that'll sort it all out within a few generations and Darwin can be right about the human race too ... -
Welcome along, you will learn tons here, maybe not so much about 50ps and £2s though!
-
Agreed, and thanks for counting them! Seem to only get some decent ones on Sundays!

azda, i sincerely hope that you and peckris both understand that my posts were meant in good faith and also meant to differentiate between the bad that occurs on ebay, those you have highlighted as shill bidders, those who clearly sell the utmost of polished crap, designed to mislead, and the genuine dealer, whom may have had a difference in grading to personal levels. we may all disagree on grade of a particular coin at times with bona fida dealers, that happens, we have different ideas and ideals, different knowledge of a specific coin/dies....etc etc, but it sure must be difficult to be all embracing. azda....how many times have you come on here to ask for die pairings/references for a particular penny.....loads azda....how many times have you asked for a grading on a particular coin...................................loads does that make you or any other here better than CC or Rendell........maybe yes, maybe no. but yes it does make YOU and Peckris and CC and Rendell and all the others here far and away better than the those shill bidders, crap sellers on ebay...........and that was the whole point of my original post....... im gonna leave this forum now................theres clearly no place for a prick like me here. ski I wouldn't worry, ski. There will always be disagreements with people even in the most (normally) harmonious of settings. Doesn't mean they're by default right, and you're wrong. Sometimes they will be and sometimes you will be. Sometimes you will both be half right and half wrong. I've got skin thicker than a Rhinos arse so you or anybody else might get me revved up for a minute or two but after that I start to worry about more important things like "can Newcastle stuff the Toffees the day?" Not on this occasion, John. I was hoping they would, too. Pleased for Man City ~ was really Boys Own Annual stuff getting those 2 goals in injury time. On a sour note, I note that psycho Barton got sent off again, and hopefully will face a lengthy ban. Sorry to go off topic, folks The Mighty Mags came "unstuck" against the Toffees Didn't matter in the end with Arsenal and Arry's boys winning. Still a great season for us though. I think City deserved it this year and congrats to them. Barton.... "taxi to Broadmoor" That lad has totally lost the plot. I think Hughes will offload him (or try to at least) as he could have cost them about £95million if Bolton had got another goal. Will still have a bit of a chuckle if Chelski finally win their European Cup and "'Arry's boys" get demoted to the Europa League AbsaBleedingLutely!!! Paulus, your avatar is still a small blue ? - is that me or you? I have emptied my browser cache. For me, it shows up in this thread but not in my profile, not sure which of those is my 'avatar' ... guess it's the problem Chris was talking about, and not you! -

Be interesting to see where this ends up, someone is going to end up paying well over 3 figures for 2 George V coins, neither of which he (or she) has had sight of a photo or any information about the obverse (presumably!) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150812654778?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648#ht_500wt_1413
