I didn't imagine for a moment it could enhance your collection Peter! But if anyone is interested please PM me, else it will be eBayed along with my hammered coins over the next month or so

I got this from him in Feb, was delighted! I love the toning. So often BU's are spoilt by carbon spots. Well I am selling it now, need all the funds I can get to focus on milled silver, so offers welcome!!

I am now using half a dozen different dealers but have yet to go to a coin fair, I will be this Spring / Summer! I still use eBay a lot, the risk element is all part of the game I think, I have had some real bargains and paid over the odds for others, and as for the 2 forgeries in January, well ...! As for the 1910 shilling that started this thread, I was pleased to upgrade from my gF to something with some eye appeal, and will again one day ... I paid £16, which some believe is over the odds and others don't seem to! I like it anyway, however common! £16 !!!! In anyone's book that's a bargain Thanks Peck, you normally seem to make me feel good about my eBay punts! Here's the link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320884222269?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2648#ht_500wt_1413

I have just acquired this, here are the seller's pics: All opinions welcome
-
Happy with this at £70, would you be? All opinions welcome!
-
That's an amazing variety for a 1917 halfcrown Typos aside, is it in order to ask how much you paid for it? Nice example, BTW. I don't mind coming clean, I am here to learn as much as anything! If only it was inscribed 1917 and genuine lol!! I paid £90 plus postage, and pending any negative replies am very happy!

Not sure. For wear, definitely I would be happy. But, are those buffing marks I see? Here again my ignorance is exposed, what are buffing marks?

I find many of Bucks Coins' photos seem to have a milky white softness about them ...

Letters and symbols on early milled silver
Paulus posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I am putting together a very brief summary of what these symbols mean, but having searched around on-line for a while I am missing a few snippets of information. Chris's summary (on this site, link below) is excellent, but can anyone fill in the following gaps for me? http://www.predecimal.com/p8milled.php What does the * in E* Anne 1707-08 shillings signify? What does the semee of hearts on George III 1787 shillings and sixpences denote (or the absence of same?)? Thanks for any help! -
Let's see what answers we get for this: In pre-decimal English money, how many 1/4 farthings make 1 guinea? (sorry, I was bored)

I would like to know price comparisons for quality milled English silver (in particular) sold at Australian and US auctions (including eBay) vs the UK, does anyone know if this research has been done or have any pointers to short-cut an investigation?
-
I've asked to see the other side. A nice looking face is just as important as a good tail! I take it the 'other side' was stunning, how the smeg did it go for £109?? Did you buy it Debbie?!!
-
Yey, you read the question properly! Quite mind boggling though that you would need over 4000 of them to have just over a quid!!
-
Where are you seeing that Richard, I can only see pennies!
-
I think if I ever sell my collection I will sell it in the US, or am I missing something obvious here that would prevent me doing this? Do they pay a lot more than we do for UK coins too?

1662 Crown Rose below off axis
Paulus posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I have just acquired this type, the die axis is a little off (10 degrees?), does anyone know if that is what is meant by Spink 3351? It is edge dated. Thanks for any help as ever! -
One of the things I have difficulty with is identifying these over-date types, I was told this was a 40 over 46 variety, would anyone like to comment?
-
Thanks Peck, hows this?

Letters and symbols on early milled silver

Back to my original question, does anyone know why (y?) or whether there is any significance in the two different York mint marks for William III - Y and y? -
1905 HALFCROWN --- is it genuine ?
Paulus replied to numismatist's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
There was also a Theresa Green at my school, also a gentelman with the surname Hunt . I worked with a guy who I can't think of his first name with the surname Riddle, of course he was called Jimmy. I also worked with another guy who would wear the same shirt all week, he was christened Daz. Christened!! That's a bit extreme!! -
1905 HALFCROWN --- is it genuine ?
Paulus replied to numismatist's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Do you know the origin of a certain pervy greeting in English? It goes back to the days of the French Navy. Before a sea battle the crews were allowed to hit the red-light district en masse. When it was time to embark they sent a messenger round all the brothels to call out (in French) : "To the water - it is the hour". Not falling for that one again! -
