  1. I think only the provincial mints had letters, the London Mint did not
  2. Is this major variety listed anywhere?

often hammered though Many thanks to Tom and Colin for your knowledge and wisdom. I will pass on your information to my friend and see what he would like to do next. There are quite a few coins but these do appear to be the pick of the bunch. The rest consist of coins like Inverness Pennys from 1795 and 1796 and others that are practically blank discs. As a final request would any of you care to hazard a guess at the value of the coin from the first post? Picture below, apparently a Henry the VIII penny. Many thanks, Mark. I will take a stab at £30-£40 judging by the condition in the pics
  4. Thanks everyone, great input, I'm really interested in this stuff! BTW is it correct to assume that the with/without hearts coins are as common as each other, so all things being equal, for a similar condition coin, the value would be the same either way? Or is one of variety considered more desirable than the other? Pre-1816 silver is really outside of my main area of knowledge (not that I'm an expert on even the post-1816 coinage...), but I've started to take an interest in the earlier Georgian silver recently, I guess I should really get hold of a copy of "English Silver Coinage".... In my price guides they are valued the same pretty much
  5. Thanks everyone, great input, I'm really interested in this stuff!
  6. Thanks Chris, I was wondering if the asterix or castle symbols signified anything specifically?
  7. Oh and the castle that sometimes accompanies the elephant below??

Debbie I thought you might be interested in this site if you haven't seen it already? http://www.romanbritain.freeserve.co.uk/lovetokens.htm
  9. Peter, it was impossible for the coin to move anywhere. What he's trying to do is say that its got huge cabinet friction and then tell me he wants a price reduction, but then tell me we can take it off the Shilling. When i replied to him telling him he was bullshitting because of the way it was packed (no cardboard was involved in the making of that parcel) and would have been an improbability for it to have anymore wear than it showed in the pictures he then suddenly became very very quiet, especially when i told him what he was obviously trying to achieve by bullshiting. He was immidiately blocked. Right behind you Dave, eBay as a seller can be a right royal pain in the arse

    1000th member?

I have news regarding Gollum the whirlwind (Garry), happy to share it with anyone through PM or email but I would rather not post it to here ...
  11. I had a Richard Head in my class at school ...
  12. Better pics, I think I will acquire it!
  13. Thanks Peckris, at the moment I am still collecting eddie 7 and george 5 dates and this would complete my 1905, so I am sorely tempted ... I always am by bad pics bizarrely, to me the coin can only be better than the pic!
  14. Could anyone help me identify this please? It is rather worn as you can see! It looks like Liz but I have no idea about the year, mm, or even the denomination! It weighs just 0.4g and measures 13.5mm. Thanks for any help
  15. Perfect, thanks Clive
  16. It doesn't appear to be any better than Fine, so that would be about the £50 quid mark. So we're totally in agreement then on grade....................Is it genuine Paulus? I have absolutely no idea any more!!
  17. Oh, it was something to do with her female house mate and I asked if she may be a lesbian and never heard from her again. I was just making conversation, it wouldn't have bothered me. Nice pussy by the way. You do have a way with the ladies Chris. Are you gay? No Steve, judging by his comments I would guess he just helps them out when they're busy (Frankie Howerd re-incarnated?) ooh er missus
  18. Oh, it was something to do with her female house mate and I asked if she may be a lesbian and never heard from her again. I was just making conversation, it wouldn't have bothered me. Nice pussy by the way. lol you are the living end Chris!
  19. Update on my shilling: I have sent it off to CGS for authentication and grading as suggested, and informed the seller, should hear in 30 days or so and I will keep you all informed on here. Out of interest, here is another for sale on Baldwin's bearing the same missing tops and beading: http://www.baldwin.co.uk/coins/great-britain/george-iii-northumberland-shilling-1763.html?usrc=1
  20. Excellent acquisition Bob!

What is the best coin collecting software

Yes, I see your point… though I'm still wondering whether to keep the main hierarchy I've outlined here i.e.: coin series -> coin type -> coin specimen or whether to flatten this structure? Are we talking about hundreds or many thousands of coins? If the former (for me, 700 or so), Excel works perfectly well with all the fields (flattened if you like) into columns and hyperlinks to your photos either on your PC or on the interweb, I think unless you want to learn about relational database design and use (as a separate hobby almost!), they only come into their own when handling sizeable quantities of data

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

This is only worth bullion surely: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110829028577&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123 and no, I wont be bidding!
  23. Thats a great article, thanks Michael So I will have to go down the expert/dealer examination in hand route again (still got my dud Charlie one shilling), would anyone care to offer up their services? I have just informed the seller that I am having it looked at. I would take a look for you but I think you would be better off with a professional report as the implication from Downies is that they will do nothing without one. Robert Matthews from Coin Authentication Services is your man. I don't think Downies or anybody else can argue with his qualifications. Thanks, is he a member on here by any chance?
  24. Thanks, did you get refunded? That is another thing counting against mine then!
