1745 LIMA Halfcrown
Paulus replied to Conor44's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I agree with Stuntman, the grade seems ok, don't know the price, eye appeal is in the eye of the beholder. You get flecking in early milled silver of this period (due to metal composition) but not normally just in one place. Check with the dealer/seller that you are buying 'on approval', i.e. you need to see it in hand and will return for full no quibble refund if you are not happy, and that they are happy with that. For me, I just want a decent LIMA George II halfcrown, not both a 1745 (with the U instead of V in GEORGIUS, which I'm guessing was in error), and a 1746, just the one - this is my best so far - a few years ago these could be bought in a high grade for a fraction of what they go for now, wish I collected seriously 10-30 years ago! But there we are, still fantastic examples are available of many coins at good prices if you do your research and show patience- 13 replies

Amusing that they should choose to quote from a forum called 'predecimal' about a 2009 50p!

Thanks Rob

Thanks Rob, a perfect example of where my grading would let me down when buying or selling such an example. I think I got lucky with this one!

Only EF for me, but that will do for a variety low-tide type example

Be careful with the 1902 3d's, they could be Maundy and could be proofs that you are viewing, which may or may not tick your boxes! Maundy Matt Proof 3d (I think!)

Opinion wanted on 1731 6d
Paulus replied to Conor44's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Nice clean example. This is the 2nd bust which is perhaps worth 50% more than the 1st bust ceteris pariba. I'd go "approaching GVF" for grade. -

I echo some of the opinions above. I would try and find better grade/eye appeal, and if plumping for this one would definitely not pay aEF money for it -
Anne Sixpence- opinions wanted

1887 Gold - Proof / Currency
Paulus replied to Colin88's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I have been told that the official boxes (for 1902 for example) containing proof sets actually have "Specimen Coins" written on the top of the box - as if back then they used the terms 'proof' and 'specimen' interchangeably -
Yey Richard, so pleased to see you posting, you have helped me so much with Charles I ! My favourite from you:
