    1841 half crown help please

Wow! GEF you say! That puts it at over £5 K according to Spink, what do CGS value it at? (Their site's 'closed' at the moment so you can't look it up, if you don't already know)

1951 is a harder year for pennies, but it is available in that proof set I mentioned and highly recommend you look in to

A few comments / observations from me, some of which are purely a reaction to your current spending spree! Have you bought a book on basic grading yet? By far the best / simplest is this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Standard-Guide-Grading-British-Coins/dp/0948964561/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1468273444&sr=1-1&keywords=grading+coins None of these are UNC, so don't go by price guides for UNC, at or around EF looks more likely from the pics (even less in some cases perhaps) You have 14 days to return them for a full refund, whatever the listing states. Ebay will back the buyer in any dispute over that, for distance selling BINs (it's the law) I would want better / bigger pics of each coin when spending the sort of money involved here There maybe under 3 hours left on this listing, but in all probability it will be unsold and relisted (Nearly) every coin / coin lot has a value worth paying, if you got them all for a tenner then that's obviously a bargain, £550 is obviously too much. What is their counter-offer? I hope that helps a bit! Personally - avoid and move on Rob is a recommended dealer and his coins I always find to be accurately graded http://www.rpcoins.co.uk/

I wouldn't dream of using tweezers! Gloves and only by the edge. I prefer a large magnifying glass with a light, or blowing up my photographs to show detail I never buy when the coin only has a pic of one side, 9 times out of 10 that is because the other side has issues, but yes about a fiver delivered if the Obv is ok. This one could be sterling silver (.925 - Spink 4015) or .500 (S. 4026), does the seller indicate?

Mine's graded UNC by CGS, but I think that's a little generous

Initial reaction - over-graded, over-priced, and looks dipped, avoid My example of an old head half crown cost £130 and is much better than the one you are looking at imo Tip - on eBay, wherever you see 'Make offer', do so - it means the seller will accept less than the BIN price Also, expect some toning on old silver coins - if there isn't, ask yourself why?

Having connection problems sorry, as I said I wouldn't buy that particular example (unless you get a chance to see it in hand, as Rob points out)

The best places to buy genuine accurately graded coins is always from decent dealers (online or at coin fairs) and dedicated coin auctions (of which there are several), such as DNW and London Coin Auctions. For your needs right now it may be best dipping your toe in to the waters of a few dealer web sites, such as that owned by this forums's owner (Chris Perkins - http://www.predecimal.com/), Colin Cooke, R.P Coins (Rob on here), http://www.pennycrowncoins.co.uk/ (Derek - Red Riley on here), and others. Depending on your storage / presentation needs it does sound like a 1951 set might fit the bill, should cost around £100 for a decent one, this is the set I am referring to: http://www.ebid.net/uk/for-sale/1951-gb-specimen-proof-coin-set-festival-of-britain-royal-mint-129816182.htm?from=googleshop_uk&adwords=Y&gclid=Cj0KEQjwwYK8BRC0ta6LhOPC0v0BEiQApv6jYb5Cd86nHOITGj6k1582NbsFbYqdl52INNs8Xd3QY7gaAsJd8P8HAQ The penny in that set is relatively scarce Edit: But I wouldn't buy that particular example

Welcome Mick I like the theme of collecting 1899 and 1951 and in between, gives you some focus. Silver George VI Half Crowns (like the one you pictured) are plentiful, and cheap and easy to find in high grades - you did fine with that one. The challenge for these very often is to find examples without bag marks (like those 2 tiny nicks on the left edge of the shield). For 1951 there is a Festival of Britain proof set (crown to farthing), which is extremely nice and not expensive as pre-decimal proof sets go. This is my only 1899 coin (I collect types rather than dates)
  21. Could someone post the correct weight for these please? I have Googled, and tried Tony Clayton's site, Spink, ESC, CCGB and Maberly Phillips to no avail Adthanksvance
  22. Do you know what the silver purity of an 8R was? I'm guessing it "varied" !
  23. I would expect a weight 'range' Rob, for the reasons you state. The two I have are 26.6 - 26.7 g. However, I'm surprised these are so much less than the weight for a Crown, when the silver content was everything in terms of backing the coin's value, and then it was revalued at 5 shillings and 6d - just a fascinating subject I guess!
  24. Ah yes, thanks Matteo, I forgot about that site!
