2013 50p royal mint error

Only if in uniform -
I have watched the PCGS video on micro-grading (or was it NGC?), but quite how they can distinguish between a 63 and a 64 is beyond me!
-
I have 4 Edward VII Maundy sets, having started out not intending to collect them! I believe they sell best in a (preferably matching - toning and grade wise) set rather than as oddments, and better still in a vg or better condition original box. Still leaves it difficult to identify that GEF or better circulation 3d as such! Budget permitting I would hang on to it until you think you have a very high grade currency piece, so that you can satisfy yourself by comparing the 2 side-by-side, 'in hand'. The worst thing (for me) would be to still be unsure.

Very very impressive collection and web site Rash, glad to see you have got the hang of Word Press! :)

Are the pearls natural or cultured?

If the question is about which coins are undervalued in Spink or CCGB (for example) then that is something else. I trust the market to accurately reflect supply and demand on any given day and location, so, to me, prices achieved are accurate 'by definition'.

This is very exciting! Welcome to decimal.com

It is now sorted by reign rather than denomination

John's back on patrol

Very good to have you back posting John 1st target must be to finish above that absolute shower that are the Mackems! You need to change your manager (again), he is completely useless. Half expecting him to do an interview in a rubbish Geordie accent any time soon. Back to coins, sorry!

Have they made it available as an e-Book do you know (e.g. a Kindle edition)? I can't find much about it on Amazon, except that it is out of stock ...

Stu this must be dead exciting and rewarding for you, just what an enthusiast hopes for when they embark on a new area of focus :)

I have a question regarding, well, terminology I guess. My 1937 proof set is stamped 'Specimen Coins' on the original box (I think they all were), and yet these are proof coins. My 1935 'specimen' rocking horse crown has no stamp on the box and is not a proof. Am I the only one who finds these description a little confusing? I also have a 1960 'polished die' crown - is that a different process again? Thanks to anyone who can shed any light (on these reflective fields!!)

My 'benchmark' GII shilling Previous best Does this seem better?

A hammered (mm Aardvark eating a wasp) Previous best Maybe better (or maybe not)

Thanks NM, it really helps to get an impartial opinion This will not be unique to my coin pics, there will be many variations of coin pics you come across that will be more or less flattering!

Same coin I assure you Which pics are more appealing to you?

I have invested a few more hours today trying to get better. If I can get anywhere near BRG's standard one day I will be over the moon! Different coins will require different backgrounds, settings and lighting to show them off to their best (but faithfully of course!). When you only get 2 pics very often to display your coin it's important to choose carefully. I am still a total novice but feel I have made a leap forward since first posting this thread. I am trying different photographic scenarios for brighter silver, darker silver, toned silver, proof silver, and the same for copper/bronze. Yet to try gold, Cn, or other metals/alloys, although of course I have some. I do feel coin photography is extremely important for all of us, as collectors who want good pics of their coins for various reasons, and for sellers/dealers who will wish to show off their items to best effect (disclaimer - I do not advocate or support 'photo-shopping' in any way!) So for those who remain interested, I will post a few 'previous effort vs latest effort' pics for your frank and honest comments. Thanks to all who comment, be as brutal as you wish! To start, here is what I consider a clear improvement (this falls in to the darker copper category): Previous effort Latest effort Chalk and cheese to me - I can see obvious further improvements, but opinions as to whether you consider I am headed in the right direction very welcome

Very interesting post Shagreen, thanks!

Except perhaps for one of those horrible (IMO) sovereign rings!
