  1. I have sent 2 coins back to them in the past that were over-exposed, they re-slabbed and re-photographed them foc - much better but they need to realise that the pics are a very important part of the package. I saw their set-up when I visited them last year. It was (and probably still is) an Olympus compact on a fixed structure, with a single source of artificial light from a desk lamp type source, at an angle
  2. Pete's 1861 Penny. In the early days CGS pics weren't too good (they are not brilliant even now!). You can see it's a lovely coin though!

    ID PLEASE

I have to agree, these cannot be the sole meeting place for the serious collector. I have joined 3 Facebook Groups I thought may be of interest to me: British Pre-Decimal Coin Collectors Group £sdEnglish Milled CoinageSilver coins collectorsAnd I have looked at several others. They are fine as far as they go, but fail miserably when trying to rival a forum such as ours ... Some have very few posts per day weekMany are simply a way to buy sell or swap low grade crap, or set up fee-free 'auctions'I don't think I have learnt anything new of any significance from any of them, whereas I do that all the time on hereMost importantly, as a resource, there is no organisation of topics or threads, or a search facility (which I find staggering from Facebook), so it is really only the most recent posts that are easily accessibleSome of this Forum's members belong to some of these Facebook groups, and it is so clear that what they have to say in response to a 'grade and value' type question is way advanced of most othersWith current technology, serious collectors are much better off joining a forum, and this is unquestionably the best for British pre-decimal, (thanks once again Chris). I am not resisting change here, in fact Stuart's suggestion is bang on. But just hold on a moment ... the only real difference between this forum and so-called social media websites is perception ... aren't we also a form of social media website, albeit without the 'networking engine' that tries to link in contacts, family and friends? (Cowers expecting to be shot down in flames!). Just some thoughts

I agree with Coinery NM, I would like to make some observations if I may, which I hope will help. It looks to me that you were the winning bidder for this coin link which finished on eBay this evening? If not, please ignore me! If so: This is the coin you have won: I would grade this coin lower on the Obverse than The Reverse, perhaps VF on the obverse and GVF+ on the reverse, nearly GVF overall. Gradings are normally specified in this order, i.e. obverse then reverse, and the overall grading skewed towards the obverse. Did you mean to grade the obverse (the Queens head side) higher than the reverse? I think you have paid a fair price for this easily available coin, and will sell it for a similar price when you inevitably upgrade But for 50% more outlay you could get an EF example, which I think you would be much happier with Do consult us if you want before spending a significant part of your budget

Welcome Nonmortuus (interesting Forum name, hereinafter known to me as NM for short!) - welcome both to this Forum and to the hobby. You have made a great start by buying a reference book on grading, and recognising at such an early stage that basing purchases on a combination of eye appeal and price is a great approach! As Rob says, 1887 is by far the commonest date for this type, and these are easily available in high grades. I would agree with aVF as to the grade, and £22 being a fair price. You will find that this site, and the internet in general (of course), are a great resource. I like to compare coins I am considering acquiring side-by-side on my screen with others that have recently sold at auction to give me a 'benchmark'. I also use Third Party Graders (TPGs) 'population' coins as reference. These comparisons also assist with learning how to grade, and, importantly, which issues suffer from weak strikes, which can often be mistaken for wear. Are you interested in any and all coins or do you have any focus areas at this point?
  6. Same for me! Nicks and bruises turn me off in an instant! And me!
  7. Lots of options including Omnicoin, Photobucket, social media, etc, etc, but I would like to thank Nordle for recommending setting up a Wordpress website. After a few hours of using it I would also thoroughly recommend it - very functional, easy to use, and completely free. From a standing start I was able to set up the site in minutes, and have since been creating and uploading content (ongoing). This is what I have so far, and comments and tips from more experienced Wordpress users very welcome! https://pwcoins.wordpress.com

Rome The Great Power That She Was

Type collector, 1902! It's very nicely toned though!

    ΟΧΙ? Really?

A fascinating game of brinksmanship imo! Too much money at stake.

Rome The Great Power That She Was

I've no idea, not dabbled since that eBay purchase 6 years ago, but I agree that you could amass a comprehensive collection relatively cheaply (relative to coins that were circulating in England that are not as old and of lesser quality) Are you predominantly a 'type' collector like myself? I have very little interest in rare dates or varieties, preferring a higher grade for my buck ...

Rome The Great Power That She Was

Exactly why it is my one and only example of a Roman silver type! I mean, Julius Caesar, Jeez, why aren't these worth a lot more (rhetorical question!)

    Morning! Newbie here

Welcome back Tim. My preference is also for late hammered and early milled (English, mainly silver). Looking forward to seeing some pics
