  1. If you can post decent pictures on here then I expect some of us collectors could grade it accurately
  2. Indeed, and the meeting Bill was referring to would have been at the London Coins auction last weekend. I use CGS myself from time to time, and have found them to be inefficient on occasion, but nothing like this!
  3. As Rob says... if you're a collector leave well alone
  4. "You must pay a final value fee if you manage to sell your item. That’s 10% of your sale price, including postage. The final value fee is capped at £250. To work out 10%, divide your final price by 100 and times it by 10." Or, simply divide by 10, surely!

    LCA - Jun 2015

Many auction houses reserve the right to bid on behalf of the seller up to the reserve price. So if a high reserve have been set, the auctioneer can start at your highest bid (if it is the same or less than the reserve) I guess. I'm fine with that, if there is a reserve

    LCA - Jun 2015

I asked if there were rules about this in a thread a few weeks ago ... are there? If yours is the highest commission bid (why is it called that?), then to my mind, unless there are higher floor bids, you should win the item for 1 increment above the next highest bid .... If yours is the only commission/proxy bid, and there are no other bids at all, then what? 1 increment above the low estimate? If they simply jump to your max bid as the opening bid, that seems wholly wrong ... but that appears to happen sometimes at auctions on TV shows such as Flog It! and Antiques Roadtrip.

    LCA - Jun 2015

4 coins won at LCA in the last 2 years, all at my max bids, the main reason I only like bidding live. Having said that, I was pleased with all 4 coins.
  9. Is there a Bronze book other than the standard Freeman/Gouby/Peck/Satin? The Identification of British 20th Century Bronze Coin Varieties Paperback – 16 Oct 2009by David J. Groom
  10. Hey Clive, hope you're having a good one

    Goldbergs Auctions problems

Nil desperandum Rob, still many hours to go! This is how it will look when you finally get through, with a 'Login to bid' button next to each lot:

    Goldbergs Auctions problems

Yep. That's 10pm UK time, but the British are 300 lots in. No idea what that is in Oz time Actually PDT (Pacific Daylight Time) is 8 hours behind British Summer Time, which would indicate a start of 6pm UK time. Melbourne is currently 9 hours ahead of UK time, so that would be a 3am start tomorrow for Nicholas (I believe)

    Goldbergs Auctions problems

I can confirm that accessing this site with Google Chrome works just fine for me, is it lot 3783 that's sparked your interest Rob?
  16. That's pretty extreme Rob, would be a proud owner though!
  17. Love it when the over-strikes are so clear, sometimes it seems to require a leap of faith to accept what the seller is suggesting (I've opted out of those varieties so no longer bothered)
  18. No idea why we have chosen to have separate threads for hammered(my fault), silver (my fault), copper and bronze, and for acquisitions of the week, but I guess it helps (a little) to find stuff you are interested in! My comment was about milled, where there is some uniformity, but as I've said I am becoming more interested in hammered (a MASSIVE, subject of course, so baby steps for me, James I and Liz next). Rob, I would be disappointed if at some point you didn't publish some of your vast collection and knowledge
  19. You have a very interesting coin collection Rob, and one well worth presenting some how, some day! I know photographing coins frustrates you at times, as it does me, and many others, but how do you, personally, take pleasure from perusing your collection? Is it very often from viewing pics, of varying quality and accuracy of likeness, or do you regularly view your coins 'in hand'? I'm really interested in your (and other's) views on this, if a collection has to be stored away in a bank vault (for example), then are you only left with the pics, many of which you wish were of better quality?
  20. That's more up my street, early hammered has yet to float my boat. The history in these Charles I civil war issues, well that's something else. An Oxford is on my wants list
  21. Thanks Rob! Boy, there can't be many of them about!
  22. Just been drooling over the amazing coin porn in this thread again. Worth revisiting time after time for the stunning examples and quality photography Here's another of mine, partly just to re-promote the thread!

    Guess The Grade Revisted

Given the continued scrutiny, quite rightly, over the impartiality, objectivity and consistency around CGS grading, I invite thoughts on these 3 coins (none of which are being submitted to an LCA auction) What grades do you think CGS assigned to these newly graded coins (traditional UK grades or CGS numbers, CGS pics)? Coin 1, 1893 Florin Coin 2, George II Crown
