Big Piss Off Re Packaging!
Paulus replied to Coinery's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I must admit I share your annoyance Stuart! Not quite up to your standard of packaging!! He deserves some poor feedback methinks ... link to seller -
That's a very worthy coin but I think the auction will finish at over £200. The CGS valuation (for what it's worth) is £275. You will be aware it is slabbed, so you may or may not want to free it from its coffin if you win it, as is your preference!

Lcn Auction - 1877 Narrow Date Penny

I translated it...sounds good. These Americans and their ironic dry wit ... -
Yep, you were close Dave, I was urging it to close at £150 dead! For an auction, eBay can be very predictable I find - even for unusual items! I thought the one I linked to tonight might have been slightly better, but the poor gold hue pics may have let it down

I have been meaning to ask this question for some time ... I am interested to know why these repros typically command a price of £20-£30 (on flea Bay) when they are nearly always clearly advertised as copies/forgeries and 'an Ashmore coin'? They are good quality it seems, but what is to stop 'imitation Ashmores' flooding the market? Possibly nothing I guess ... is there a sub-market for such repros? Have I answered my own question!! Do any of you 'regular' collectors fill 'impossible' gaps with Ashmore coins? Just interested! Example: link Also, every single eBay listing seems to state 'an Ashmore coin' in the main listing description ... someone please enlighten me!

If you're still after one Sweep, this one looks ok (at least at the current price): link

I have a couple of contacts that like to buy high grade CGS from me (at around CGS valuation), the rest on the Bay. My eBay CGS sales to date (although it's impossible to be conclusive) have consistently yielded (much) better results than my raw coin sales - I will summarise the results for those interested!
-
Graded CGS 85 (Choice UNC - BU) - a tad generous I think as I am sure I can detect traces of wear to the highest points - Dies 1A. First I of VICTORIA to space.
-
The subject of much debate - Graded CGS 60 (EF)
-
CGS EF - Rejected - as some of you predicted
-
Graded CGS 75 (aUNC) - Dies 2A. E of DEI has short upper arm
-
Graded CGS 65 (GEF) - LXIII edge. Dies 3E Obverse: Shorter border teeth Reverse: Diffused more level streamer
-
Graded CGS 82 (Choice UNC)

The results are in

I want to take it out for two reasons. 1) The C in NICHOLE looks like an E but it's hard to tell through the plastic. 2) Most British collectors prefer their hammered coins 'raw'. Only two? Stuart is such a fan of slabbed!

Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (Sophia Charlotte; 19 May 1744 – 17 November 1818) was the wife of King George III. She was Queen of Great Britain and Ireland from their marriage until the union of the two kingdoms in 1801, after which she was Queen of the United Kingdom. She was the first Black Queen of England. Charlotte was the eighth child of the Prince of Mirow, Germany, Charles Louis Frederick, and his wife, Elisabeth Albertina of Saxe-Hildburghausen. In 1752, when she was eight years old, Sophie Charlotte's father died. As princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Sophie Charlotte was descended directly from an African branch of the Portuguese Royal House, Margarita de Castro y Sousa. Six different lines can be traced from Princess Sophie Charlotte back to Margarita de Castro y Sousa. She married George III of England on September 8, 1761, at the Chapel Royal in St James’s Palace, London, at the age of 17 years of age becoming the Queen of England and Ireland. Well I never knew that! Edit: according to Wiki, any African ancestry is unproven -

How do you identify this variety Stuart? -
Just an eBay seller using Estate Agent style descriptions IMO. He also states the contradictory "As struck with minimal wear" So the coin is EF, GVF and AS - take your pick!
