    Detecting finds

Very nice findings. Unfortunately in Portugal it is almost impossible to use a detector.

How do you grade your british coins

    Thanks.
  3. Hi, What is the sistem that you use in the U.K for grading your coins? I know that there are MSs this and XFs that. But from Spink I only get F,VF etc.... In Portugal we use: Reg- Regular, you can identify the coin , date but its very circulated; Bc- Well preserved; Mbc- Very well preserved; Bela- Apparently did not circulate; Soberba- Superb. How do you do it for the british coins? Regards.

  7. Only tin coin I have is this one 16th century Portugal or Portuguese Malacca I think Ugly but interesting Looks like the Calm Sea variety. David It is a portuguese ceitil I believe, but those things are very hard to sort because they were struck in different reigns and there is almost an infinity of varieties. But the material is not tin its copper and I believe it´s not a calm sea.

Brilliant. All those who don't believe in spending money on books take note. I presume the problem is the same in Portugal as it is here. No book covers everything, and even within a specialist book there are things missing. That's why you need so many reference books to cover all the gaps. Yes it´s the same but we have the mutual support in 2 forum´s like this one. There is always an expert that can help you in a particular area. Another thing is that someone that finds any information in the internet or in is own investigations automatically shares with the rest. Regards

Thanks, But for the portuguese coins there is a sort of bible(commonly called after the name of the author Alberto Gomes or just A.G.) that we use, the rest are pocket books mainly as a price guide. In England do you have a book like that to use has a reference or each collector uses a different guide to catalog is collection. If so wich is the most used by the majority of the U.K. collectors. Regards

Thanks, I have to give it a better look. With portuguese I don´t have a problem but with these I´m just a beginner. There will be lots of stupid questions I´m afraid. Regards.

Hi, I´m Luis (Caetobriga)from Portugal. I don´t know if this is the right place do do this but I cannot find a presentation area. I have started a british coin collection since 1900 mainly because of pre-decimal coins that I find very beautiful. My question is related with a good catalog for british coins. I have bought Spink´s catalog 2012. Is it a good one? Another question is about the method of this catalog becuase ypu only have a reference despite the dates. Here in Portugal for our coins we have a reference for each one of them, there is a group for ex: 5 and every date has a reference ex: 5.1, 5.2 etc. With this Spink catalog its a reference for the entire group. Is there any subdivision for the different dates. Sorry to bother you with these basic questions. Luis Gomes.
