Although I would dearly love to Stu, I'd better stick to my hammered pennies - or I'll end up with another sub-branch of collecting I must attempt to stay within my collecting budget or it will be beans on toast for the rest of the month!
-
I would personally keep it as I'd love to have a medieval Plantagenet gold coin in collection ... I really like Edward III coins.
-
Hi Upinsmoke, the coins are 11mm and 12.5mm ... tiny little silver pennies. I think the Hartberger holders people have been recommending (at 15mm) would be a good fit for now. I will buy some and give it a try!

I searched a whole load of change (several hundred pounds worth of small change) and only found one 2017 penny. I was wondering the same thing myself!
-
Chaps, Please could I ask your advice regarding the classification of the two attached Edward I pennies. I'm hoping the first is a 1c as I've been looking for a good quality one for ages! The second coin, although not so nice, is a Canterbury mint so a little different. Many thanks, Descartes

Hi Stu, Apologies for the delay. Was travelling home for Christmas! The 7a penny I was watching was this one. Serves me right for procrastinating... next time I see one, I will buy it instantly! hope you have a great Christmas. Descartes

Bad luck, Stu what a little gem too. It really annoys me when one has ones eye on a nice little coin and it gets whipped away due to procrastination/finances etc grrrrrr! The same thing happened to me recently on a lovely Edward I penny class 7a which was 'buy it now' on ebay, I was watching it all day on my phone, and when I finally got home from work and was in a position to buy it... it was sold!

The gloomy Kiev weather has been getting me down this week, so I decided to buy myself some coins to look forward to when I return to the UK for Christmas. Here's my first purchase - a little James I penny, third issue, mm. two pellets. It was a bit pricey but I'm working on building a collection of pennies with quality samples from each reign
-
Superb coin with a fantastic portrait of king Richard great find!
-
I don't know if Mr. B lurks on this site, but he always gives me first dips on the Edward pennies ... super nice man
-
Thanks Stu! I'm afraid I'm still in Ukraine working until 21st December and I don't have any pictures of my 1b on my laptop. I'll try and get my folks back home to take a pic on the phone. If not, when I return to the nest for the Christmas hols I'll post one on here myself.
-
Thanks Davetmoneyer, you are a gem! I thought it was a 1c but I wanted to get an expert opinion. I now have all the class 1 pennies in top grade, except for the rather elusive 1a. I know the Canterbury isn't so aesthetic to look at but I haven't got any Edward I pennies minted from there!

Oh, and here are the reverses of the coins
-
Hi Thazz, You might also consider getting a copy of the monthly magazine COIN NEWS. It lists all the coin fairs, auctions and numismatic clubs for all areas of the UK

I placed some bids in the Baldwins St James auction. One of the lots I placed a bid for 500 pounds. It finished at 500 pounds but it says I lost the bid. How is this possible? Could somebody with more auction experience shed some light on what happened. I'm really disappointed as the Henry II penny was a little stunner! If my maximum bid was 500 hundred surely I should have been the winner?? Descartes
-
Thanks for all the info about how auctions work guys, I've learned a lot about the process if nothing else. Here's a snap shot from my Baldwins account. I clearly lost the Aethelred by a wide margin, but like I said, I was a little disappointed by the Henry II penny, which according to my account ended at 500 pounds :/ Excuse the poor photo.
-
Yes, I agree. It is definitely unethical
-
I was the highest bidder at 460 pounds just before the live auction bidding started. I had to go to work then and when I checked my Baldwins account later, I noticed I hadn't won and the coin had sold for 500 pounds. That was my maximum bid offer. Never mind, there's always a next time I guess.

I have all the Beatrix Potter 50ps as standard brilliant uncirculated coins. Wish I had ordered a couple of those silver proofs when they first came out. Hindsight is a wonderful thing ...
-
I've always wanted an Ex-J.P. Mass in my hammered coin collection so I bought this on Friday. It's a Henry III VIc1 penny (the first 'short cross' class of Henry after bad king John?) ... I really like the elaborate lettering in the legend!
-
The reverse is not so nice [Walter on LVN], but nevertheless it's always good to have an ex-Mass in ones collection
-
What a little gem! another fantastic find.
-
Not a very exciting selection for hammered penny enthusiasts this time around.

Is this Question Impossible!?
Descartes replied to Danelaw's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I'm currently attempting this, but I'm trying to get a top grade example penny for each reign (and where possible collecting Salisbury & Wilton mint pennies). It's taking a while, but there's no hurry and I'm learning a lot on the journey!
