Hi Coinery, yeah, I'm really happy with my 1d - so I got what I wanted! Yes, I saw that lovely Bristol penny too. Didn't win i though. What a bargain for such a nice coin. This year it seems nearly impossible to find any grade Edward I pennies. I've submitted a 'want list' with several dealers now, but the top grade Edward I coins are either literally bought the moment they are listed on websites, or impossible to win in auctions. Perhaps I need to work on my auction bidding skills!

Lovely crown, Paulus, and a great job with the photo! I'm going to start experimenting with images of my coins this Summer too. I work away most of the year, so I often miss my collection, and I really should get into the 21st century! If I could produce some photos even half as good as your crown pic, I'd be happy!

Apologies if this has already been covered in the forum somewhere (I've searched but can't find the answer). I'm getting a little confused over Edward I/II pennies. Please could somebody tell me in what group pennies stopped being Edward I and become Edward II. Is it type 12?

I have a reasonable 1649 In my collection (well kind of.. it's dated 1651, but with a 1649 observe, so an old reused die). Yes, the up and coming DNW auction example is superb. I have my eye on the Philip and Mary sixpence, 1555, with the beaded inner circle ... I'm going to have a shot at it anyway.

I think the DNW auction on the 14th-16th June is a better auction this time for us sixpence collectors. There are still some nice coins up for grabs though ...

I'm very envious that you have the Pingo pattern. I've seen some pics of this sixpence (it's similar to the George III 1878 if I remember correctly but with a beaded outer border). A really lovely coin.

As a sixpence collector, I quite often see pattern pieces listed in auctions, and wanted to ask peoples opinion on them forming part of a collection. The most common pattern sixpences I see popping up are examples by JP Droz (1790). Baldwins always seem to have a couple for sale and they appear fairly regularly in auctions. I'd like to have one in my collection, but wanted to know their significance. I wonder if anybody could shed some light on Droz and his 1790 & 1791 pattern sixpences? When he produced these patterns were there a set number minted? If so, how many? (they are normally just listed as scarce). Also, could anybody recommend a book/literature listing patterns and their rarity?

Does anybody know what the world's largest coin ever in circulation was? Somebody told me it was the fifty-CFP Franc at 32.9 mm? I wonder if there has been anything to rival our fabulous Cartwheel Twopence in weight? Descartes

I recently bought a commonwealth sixpence to add to my collection. On closer inspection it looks like the 'S' on 'US' is covering an old letter. Is this correct, or is it just me? any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks, Descartes

Hi Nordle, thank you for your reply. The only other photo I have at present is the attached (from the seller). The coin is currently at my mother's and I won't be seeing it again until I return on Christmas Eve!

What an exceptionally beautiful copper token! I wouldn't have any compaints having it in my collection!

I was also bidding at DNW's 21st March auction but on the William and Mary... sadly, I was pipped and didn't quite win it was a nice coin too!

Do any of you hammered pros know if there is any literature on the Salisbury and Wilton mints in Wiltshire? This is my 'neck of the woods' and it would be interesting to find out if anybody has researched/written any books or articles about these local medieval mints! Thanks, Descartes

Hello, Now I can afford to upgrade some of my coins I'm finding it hard to find certain dates in the George V sixpence series in what I would consider UNC (1919,1920,1921, 1922 & 1917). Some dealers are listing their coins as UNC/BU when the lions on the reverses have worn noses. Is this just the way the coins were minted for these years? Thanks for your help.

Thanks Rob. As all the other places (i.e. orb, tail, paws) are not worn, I will assume it's UNC with just a weak face striking

Paulus's beautiful 1911 sixpence reverse lion is a good example of the perfect nose compared with the 1921 sixpence below which is also UNC. Is this 1921 sixpence the flat nose soft striking process mentioned earlier in the thread? I justed wanted to check with you guys before I go and buy a bunch of upgrades for my collection. Thanks.
