Now, I would love to sell at coincraft prices, but purchase at realistic!

I have read somewhere that English soldiers in Scotland during the reign of Edward I were paid 1d a day. Highly skilled labourers were paid 2d a day. Not a lot of bread could be purchased with that.

Which is interesting, because I have thought the CC cats were a bit high end on prices of coins.

I agree on bread being a staple commodity then and now, however factor that bread is considerably cheaper now than it was then. I pay about 50p for a loaf of bread. It is a pittance to what a worker must have paid for bread, probably a smaller loaf, back then. Food production, from growing crops to the end result was much more difficult back in the 14th century than it is now. Prices were much more consequential as a result. Even in the 1960's prices when factored by wages vs. prices of commodities were much higher than they are now in the beginning of the 21st century.

A qustion about hammered coins.

And my split on striking example, a half merk or 6/8 from the reign of James VI of Scotland. This piece is dated 1572 and is my largest Scottish coin. -
A qustion about hammered coins.
scottishmoney replied to Hussulo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
One aspect of hammered coins to be considered, is that there is no one coin that is like another, they are all unique because of the manner of which they were struck. Probably one of my favourite hammered coins from Medieval Scotland, this is one of the first Groats struck in Scotland during the 1350's. From the reign of David II(1329-1371), this coin may have been used to pay ransom to Edward III after David II was released from a long captivity in England in 1356. -
Check out Vcoins.com, there are many dealers on there selling bulk lots of dirty old romans for less than 50p apiece. My son got one of the filthy Romans, we worked with him, got him identified and gave him a good home.

Slabbing in Europe
scottishmoney replied to TomGoodheart's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
All through history people have thought they were doing the best thing to preserve something, and ended up causing more harm than if they had just left it alone. Classical paintings are a good example of something messed with over time and then subsequently damaged. The plastics in slabs are claimed to be inert, but how they are impacted by environmental factors such as temperature, humidity etc over time may yet to be known. I have original rolls of US silver dollars from the 1880's that I put in "inert" plastics and stored in a safety deposit box several years ago, they were blast white before, now they are pink. They had gone over 120 years and stayed white until I removed them from their paper wrapper and put them in plastic. -

I voted no, but of course. What does a slab do for a coin besides intomb it in possible reactive and corrosive over long term plastics? The grade that someone else assigns a coin should have nothing do with how the piece appeals to a true collector. -

Which might account for their rather worn states of preservation now. Many of them appear as though they might have served duly as grape shot during the Napoleonic wars on the Continent. -

I am a bit of a purist, I believe the only grade which matters is your individual opin of the piece in question, and not the opin of another printed on some paper and tombed within corrosive plastics. -
Victorian Collectors
scottishmoney replied to Geordie582's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
There reside in many a coin cabinet in a museum here and tither that have ink marks as per noted previously. It was a common custom, objectionable by our standards, but okay by theirs. But then someone 100 years hence will surely ponder what the hell made people tomb their collectable coins within corrosive plastics? -

I wondered how long it would take. He posts lots of anti-Catholic filth on another forum, so not only is this person a bigot in one way, but also in other facets. Poor bloke, he have many many inner misdoubts of his own sexuality and religion to have such vehement thoughts. However I don't wonder that perhaps it could have been better to have not afforded him such the opportune to have been blocked, but rather let him continue to post his vitriolic effluence with no affirmation from within our fair ranks. He does just move from venue to venue doing the same thing, so on Cointalk, Coinpeople etc. Now he apparently have his own forum, a forum of one. Actually Chris, I do not believe he is a New Zealander, but a wannabee from more northerly climes. So New Zealand's fair repute is not in suffer, but of course high in esteem as usual. -

AW airs his misbegotten views until he realises he cannot stir the pot. He is scraping for a fight, like a typical troll. He comes in under the guise of being a British Empire collector, post lots of stuff about coins, then begins to post his vitriolic thoughts about religions, Irish in general, the Vatican etc. This is not the only forum which he have partaken of, he does indeed post his filth on others as well. He is demonstrably homophobic, which studies have suggested is a reactive self denial of one's inner doubts of their own sexuality. Be not offended by him, but do be sympathetic for the poor misbegotten soul. He acts of many guises, all of which he is denial of. Indeed he is a remarkably troubled individual whom have claimed on other forums to have suffered abuse by certain representatives of a purported church. So therefore he alleges said institution have an official policy of such matters, which is a bit far out, but in his tortured and tormented existence purports to have truths. -

I believe it has more to do with the "investor/collector" mentality of many collectors in the USA. Frankly I purchase my coins purely for collector reason, I enjoy them as miniature artworks, with some monetary significance. Not as investments which are to be pawned off of in the near future. However to discuss numismatics here in the USA with other "collectors" there are not so many whom share said opin. Hmm, foreign policy... too bad both cannot stand down for their misteps. -

Those are really desirous so. Having collected so many Plantagenet coins, I like the knockoffs too. They were even made as far away as Germany. Says something about the sterling penny, it was respected. -

Actually with some Scottish bronzes, notably those purported to have been created by the French soldiers stationed in Scotland during the reign of Mary QoS, they actually have much greater interest and value to specialised collectors. I have a counterfeit of a Charles I bodle that I paid the same price for as a crown issued example, but would have paid more if the price was more, just to have the counterfeit. I would like to find a decent counterfeit of a Bawbee from the reign of Charles II. The reason the contemporary Scottish counterfeits are in a different league, is that they were destroyed in coinage recalls by the mint, and the penalty for even possession of counterfeits could be severe. In addition to revaluations, coins were countermarked to confirm authenticity, especially during the reign of James VI, with the Marian coinages being recalled and countermarked. However with UK Georgian counterfeits of halfpennies, the obvious is true, they are valued much less, but then they are much much more common also. -

If this piece were counterfeit, it is likely contemporary, and collectible thus. I have Scottish counterfeits from the time and they are more interesting than the authentic coins. -
