    Cataloguing my collection....

I can't believe you have one of those already, I have been looking for years I have two! Not for sale at any price

    Cataloguing my collection....

Thanks guys! Most helpful, as usual I was thinking of using the "Description" column for some of the details you suggested, so an example would be: Farthing, High Tide, Big Nose variety, sexy legs issue, Darkened, Spink 99999999.... etc.. I may do the photo reference too, but will have to wait until I get a decent camera.
  3. Mongo only pawn... in game of life.
  4. Oops! I just noticed the sub section for discussion on books, sorry. Im such a numnut

    A grading attempt...

Thanks threepence. As a rule I only put in a bid equal to what I would pay for a grade lower than listed... when it is a dodgy photo, or I am unsure of the grade.

To quote myself! My camera really does suck balls, so I will not bother posting some photos

    A grading attempt...

Thanks for going into all that detail Peck, it is heplful to know the exact points to look at! I just had my amazon voucher delivered via email, so have just ordered the Guide to Grading book. Should be here in a day or two! I will post some photos tomorrow. My camera is not the best, but maybe you could cross reference the photos with the scans and help me to nail down a Grade for the coin
  8. Lol I know where your coming from. I started on Edward vII florins then got a few of his shillings then a couple of vickys shillings then a couple of Edwards sixpences. Now I've just bought a Charles 1 sixpence You're all crazy! He says having also bought a Charles XII today, when he should be keeping the cash for his other coin 'research'! Apparently, if you call it research, you can justify it to the other half! God knows what I shall have to come up with for the Charles XII? I am ok on that front! I dont live with the bird, yet, so I will make the most of it while I can

    A grading attempt...

Thanks Peck, the coin does look really attractive in hand. I will have to invest in a decent camera soon. I have ordered myself a x30 loupe, hopefully this will help me in educating myself to grade more accurately... Trial and error I guess! Have you bought the book on grading? and yes don't be too harsh on yourself with grades.Bag marks are acceptable on UNC coins. Your 2/6- is welcome a home at Peter Towers. I am awaiting a £10 amazon voucher, so the grading book should soon be on its way! along with Chris Perkins price book too

What is the blemish on this shilling?

I am very jealous! only yesterday, I started looking in to metal detecting for beginners, I google earthed my local area to see what farms were close by. A 16C mansion detecting session sounds like a fun day out! Good luck, I hope you have some interesting finds
  11. Picked up this shilling, nice detail I thought, just wondering if someone could tell me what the dark patches are? It does not look like toning, has someone just spilled something on it? Thanks!

  13. I have two NEF Eddie farthings in the post! I am all over the place at the moment, just when I said to myself "right! I love shillings, I am going to collect them for now"... I went and put in an order for a handful of nice grade farthings! Its all good fun
  14. Hi Gibbster, Is it a 1961 Penny or Halfpenny? The Halfpenny was unminted in 61 I believe! Also, this site will give you details on the values: http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/values/
  15. Hi Silverlight When i click the link it just takes me to the photobucket homepage?

Thanks Nick. Seems I may of been a bit generous, but not to far off for one of my first attempts, I am learning

What is the blemish on this shilling?

Thanks Red Riley! That sentence really hits home. I was recently looking at some 1758 Shillings, I saw a coin graded GVF and toned with a couple of marks on it. I then saw an EF example that did not look nearly as nice to my eye, even though I could clearly see more defined detail. Being new to coins, I first thought well it MUST be better, as it is a higher grade. I think I am learning now, that if I like a coin, then the grade becomes less important
  19. You never know Peter! King Charles? William?... You might be lucky Now that is going to be difficult... an attractive portrait of Charles! Err look at the Royalty over the centuries....not attractive...I give you Liz 1,Anne,George 111.Even in their prime I would list under PUG. I dont know, Anne looks pretty fit... I definitley would!

  21. Long tail Q, Davies rev. A Thanks Rob! I was actually just looking at the ones you have for sale, I might go for both types you have on offer. Then I will only have to find the long tail to complete the set! You can have one of those too if you want. Thanks Rob. My coin pocket money is spoken for this week, so I will have to stick with those two for now (along with one of those stock box's I asked about). Will put my order in on Thursday for those 3 items
  22. Booo hiss booo! I wish I never said I was after Rob's shillings now
  23. Long tail Q, Davies rev. A Thanks Rob! I was actually just looking at the ones you have for sale, I might go for both types you have on offer. Then I will only have to find the long tail to complete the set! Cripes, are you micro'ing' already, Mongo? It's testament to the quality of this forum that you are even giving it a go. As I've said over and over, a learning resource like this one is worth a dozen books and more. Having said that, you then need the books! But hooray for you, great stuff. Your thread's really inspired me! The resources, the books.... but I also need the money! I thought the 1887 shilling would be a good place to start with something like this, as the prices are affordable for me. I am also looking into the Old head Victoria farthings varieties, with the help of Colin and his Aboutfarthings site!
  24. Thanks declan... I was googling like a nut earlier trying to find pics of all three! Those are very helpful
