Help And Advice For A Beginner

You do have a love for the history "The coins I am most interested in would be from the Roman period and up to the Victorian era. I would like buy and sell online as a hobby and would like to know the best way to get started on a budget? I want to collect the above coins not for their monetary value but for the social history they represent." Thats a great way to start but remember there are less than 15% of the dealers around now compared to 40 years ago when everyone was at it . The reasons? Many and various but mainly due to profit margins and the amount of time coins remain in collections . Its a pity coin monthly folded as well I remember looking in the back and there would be fifteen coin fairs in various parts of the country and everyone would be within twenty miles or so of a fair say five times a year. Now we are left with the midland fair the wakefield fair and a few in London.
  3. Interesting to see the 1845 large date farthing lightly cleaned with an estimate of £500 -£700 I have a similar if not nicer coin in about ef with no cleaning , I always thought it was worth £350 -£400 seems I might have been wrong

    1858/3 Penny

I would like to point out that as well as large and small dates on pennies towards the end of the copper series , they also exist on half pennies and farthings . The penny itself is a much more complicated series than the halfpenny or farthing with 1858 being the most complex

Help And Advice For A Beginner

You might and I say just might find coins to sell on local car bootsales (Good luck finding anything decent) or a better way might be local antique and collectors fairs and even summer markets if antiques change hands . Fully agree that books should be your first choice for any spare cash

Help And Advice For A Beginner

As far as coin dealing goes I would surgest don't bother , its nice someone young has an interest but I would strongly surgest its not a good way or an easy way to make a living you will need a lot of luck and working for someone else might be a better idea

None lethal at least they can be a bit of a pest at times but they do make the garden a better place as far as I am concerned. P.s. They are quite cleaver as well and I cannot see that catapult working more than a couple of times on them - they do learn.

  17. After a holidaymaker complained to a security guard in pontins southport The security guard on duty ‘refused to do anything’ because he said it ‘wasn’t his job’, the furious holiday-maker claims. Michelle said: ‘Drugs were freely being smoked everywhere you turned, kids were running wild until the early hours. ‘Parents were p***ed up, no masks were being worn, bottles of spirits were being brought into the park and drank in the entertainment area on clear show. ‘The door guard didn’t have a badge and refused to deal with the weed. He said it wasn’t his job. So I asked “what is your job then?” to which he replied “clearly a better job than you because I don’t have my holidays in Pontins”.’
  18. I think the main thing here is what really did this couple expect for their money - this place has always had a bad rep. and since pontins sold it to probably the worst hotel group in the country (britannia) which owns some hanging hotels ( the norbreck castle in blackpool comes to mind). They are not charging much for a rapidly disapearing resorce so you are not exactly going to have a holiday in bali . The security guard is also not there to police the customers - if any customer is upset about illegal goings on report it to the police ,( expect a good kickin' as you leave the park though}.
  19. The holidaymaker should have checked out the reviews on tripadvisor as well - holiday heaven is not made in butlins southport Bring the anti ant spray as well - the only place in the uk that I have heard of that has a problem with them.
  20. Personally if it was me I would tell the holidaymaker to see his employer and possably check out his employment contract - that should get rid of them

  23. A "highly significant" and rare carved Roman phallus has been discovered by archaeologists working on finds unearthed during a major road upgrade. It was found on a broken millstone by experts along the route of the A14 in Cambridgeshire between 2017 and 2018. However, it has only just been put back together, revealing the penis. Archaeologists said it was one of only four known examples of Romano-British millstones decorated this way. During work on Highways England's £1.5bn upgrade of the A14 between Cambridge and Huntingdon, more than 300 querns (hand mills) and millstones were recovered by archaeologists MOLA Headland Infrastructure, working with partners Oxford Archaeology. The stone which recently revealed its genital markings had been preserved by being reversed and adapted for use as a bedstone, after being initially broken. Decorated querns and millstones of any date are extremely rare, with only four such Roman millstones discovered from around a total of 20,000 nationwide, said Steve Sherlock, Highways England's archaeology lead for the A14. He said phallic images were "seen as an important image of strength and virility in the Roman world, with it being common practice for legionaries to wear a phallus amulet, which would give them good luck before battle". image copyrightHighways England image captionDr Ruth Shaffrey with the millstone "This millstone is important as it adds to the evidence for such images from Roman Britain. "There were known associations between images of the phallus and milling, such as those found above the bakeries of Pompeii, one inscribed with 'Hic habitat felicitas' - 'You will find happiness here'," he said. Dr Ruth Shaffrey, from Oxford Archaeology, said: "As one of only four known examples of Romano-British millstones decorated this way, the A14 millstone is a highly significant find. "It offers insights into the importance of the mill to the local community and to the protective properties bestowed upon the millstone and its produce - the flour - by the depiction of a phallus on its upper surface. "In the Roman world the phallic image was found all over the place. It was associated with good luck." just like today when you might say "How they hangin'"
