Whilst BRG clearly has a very good eye for coins, and I would've enjoyed his positive contributions a great deal, I do feel that the forum's a lesser place for the tensions created by his personal vendettas against Dave!I'm confident all the regular readers (and I read everything, refreshing many times daily, always have) and contributors (new included), will have picked up on the truth of the matter! Don't leave, Dave, it would be seen a defeat! I hope you do have a happy thanks-giving, BRG, you have superb coins, as I've repeatedly said, but you'll need to change tack, as your posts have strained what is a great forum! Agreed!

Actually, that isn't what I'd call 'brown spots', more a kind of golden toning around the legend. It's not unattractive, and with the RM mass-production methods - yes, even for proofs - it's not at all uncommon. You should see some of their early decimal proof sets (especially 1973) if you want a definition of 'ugly'. This is the only half-decent photo i made with my dodgy camera. Other 3-4 coins have brown spots not toning. I have 15 coins and 10 or 11 are spotless:)

Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum but ive been checking this website for couple of years. I have a quick question. I buy silver 50p coins from Royal Mint. Theyve been sending me one every month (at least they supposed to) and i have 15 att the moment. Couple days ago ive noticed that the older ones have brown spots on them and one or two are quite bad. I never opened a capsule and i store them all in a box. So, my question is am i doing something wrong or is it Royal Mints fault and i can complain about it? And get it exchanged for example? Thanks

This is my first post on this forum. Its been a while:) I finally found photos of the above coins. To Peckris Mint was charging me £34,99 for one. I got 3 for free because they had delays and 1 for £10. Saddly I stopped receiving them long time ago (only have 12 out of 25 or so). Emailed Royal Mint but they didnt reply. As to buying half price on ebay - yes there are the ones i have, but the ones im missing are not.

Im going back to Henry VII for now. I will get different denominations. Not sure about Edward VIII. I should have list of the coins i will loook for ready this weekend so will share it for comments. Edw VIII is easily resolved if you decide to leave the UK and go for a Commonwealth coin, of which there are examples available. Or you could cheat and go for a GV 1936 coin which continued to be struck all through Edward's brief reign, which is why they are so common. What i meant is im not sure if i should include his coin in this collection. I mean he was a king but no UK coins struck and i dont really like commonwealth coins. Well maybe except for crowned bust of KG V...

Yes, I agree completely. I get their updated listings in the post and by email but rarely look at them any more, they appear to consistently over-grade (quite significantly, we are talking more 'Country Cottage' than 'Bucks Coins' in the over-grading stakes), and their pics are appalling. Disclaimer: All just my personal opinion! I bought some coins from them in the past. All were overgraded by at least one grade. One AU shilling was more like VF. Never again.

Hammered coins grading is a bit tricky too.

Great advice Paulus. Im planning to cover gold/silver/copper and different denominations. Not sure how to store/display them. Ive just started reading new books and websites i found but already decided my first coin will be facing bust Henry VII. BTW Was there any hammered copper?

Right, ive decided ill start from Tudors from Henry VII. I narrowed it a little as Peter advised. Why from Tudors? I always wanted Henry VIII coin so starting from there makes sense IMHO. Im planning to spend £150-250 per coin per each king. Im working on exact coin list (well thinking about it:) from Henry VII to William IV so any comments/ideas/help/guidance welcome.

Good morning, my girlfriend found this coin couple of days ago. It has 'Resolute 1877' printed/punched on reverse. I checked the web and i found out about HMS Resolute. Was it done by mint to commemorate it or is it 'aftermarket'? Thanks

Good morning everyone, Ive got another (silly) question: I keep my higher grade coins in capsules, now, what capsule should i use - same size as coin or slightly bigger? Ive got high grade half penny and i dont want it to get damaged. If i use 28mm i would have to force it in but if i use 29mm coin is moving inside? I squeezed half crown into 32 mm once and now its stuck:) Thanks
