This coin looks like it has been polished to the death unfortunately...

Many thanks for sharing your expertise gents. I think collecting is a lot more fun when one has at least some background knowledge. I will read the Sharp Article with interest later on. And yes, I do get a lot of excitement when learning about and (occasionally venturing into) the dark side.

Thanks Clive. It all makes sense now.

Thanks Richard. Your endorsement regarding a Charles I shilling is indeed most reassuring. I don't mind exposing my ignorance in asking the following questions. The mm anchor would either date it to 1628-9 or 1638-9 according to Spink. However since S2797 can have mm triangle as well, I guess the year must be 1638-9. Is that correct? I have always assumed the Roman numeral (XII in this case) is the Regnal year. Having said that, I am now rather confused as the same Roman numeral can have several different mintmarks which doesn't make sense if it is really the Regnal Year. I think this coin has the "Aberystwyth" bust. Am I correct? If so is it referring to the Aberystwyth branch mint?

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to photograph them in your bank. It is really fantastic to see all these great coins!

The third note has been found by an elderly lady and she donated it to charity. She said "I don't want my picture in the papers but if it sells for a lot of money it would be better if young children could benefit from it." Bless her!

True, there are many idiots about. But he is very lucky that the idiots are for some reason attracted to his silly offers and not to the more sensible ones.

Gold plating a silver crown would be approx £40K cheaper and would look just the same ...

Just out of interest, were any of the proof wreaths originally issued in boxes? I rather suspect that cardboard cases were used like the 1935 RE proofs.
-
What is the biggest difference between currency and proof wreath crowns VS? The rim? Superior strike? Do any of the proofs have frosted designs?
-
I have seen it but just can't believe it's true. Ebay also claims he has sold 119 circulated Aquatics Swimming 2011 50p with buy it now price of £4.95. He claims he has an "unlimited supply". Can't really believe that he has sold that many legitimately.

Amazing! Just out of interest, any of those proof wreath crowns have frosted designs?

March LCA catalogue now up

I have always been happy with the promptness of their delivery service. (They probably should update their T and C which state "allow 21 days for delivery.) The e-mailing of tracking number is quite a new thing with them and I first received one for their September auction last year. -
Just a suggestion. It might be better to have one tread called e.g. "Sergiosilva's non-British Coins" and post all your coins there. If you start a new tread for each coin, then this section will soon be swamped.

Apparently, there are many more people on Ebay thinking that AM32 £5 notes are worth a lot of money. Are they just plain stupid, greedy, trying to be funny or actually in need of medical help? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AM32-Rare-sought-after-serial-number-5-pound-note-/162410574605?hash=item25d06cb30d:g:Oo8AAOSwSlBYsxPD This guy's note starts with AM21! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/five-pounf-note-am32-/182469094513?hash=item2a7c016c71:g:umQAAOSw-RFYs0RT And this one is beyond help.

Royal Mint 2015 12-sided one pound trial piece.
Sword replied to Martinminerva's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Might be there was no requirement for returning them. Just the stipulation that they are not spent or sold. -
For the region of the note he gave "uk. usa". Could this be possible? Does he know of a secret treaty between May and Trump? He also gave 00 as the denomination of the note. I now just feel sorry for him.

OK guys, what do you think of this: This guy has 100% positive feedback. 229 feedbacks in total. Wait for it ... All 229 are for buying and 0 for selling!!!

This guy is hilarious! See his only other item on sale for £1680 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/am32-885885-five-pound-note-/112323083796?hash=item1a26fa3e14:g:WTIAAOSwA3dYm6Q6 It's not a Jane Austen £5 but it is "very close to it". Serial number AM32 885885. (The Austen notes have numbers 885551 - 885554.) I have some old lotto tickets. They are not jackpot winners but are very close and only a few numbers out. Anyone want to give me £10k each? Bargain at less than 1% of the jackpot!

Royal Mint 2015 12-sided one pound trial piece.
Sword replied to Martinminerva's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I have just came across an article written in the beginning of February saying that the Royal mint has made around 200,000 of these things so far. "Scott Kuperus, from The Royal Mint, said: “To date The Royal Mint has issued over 200,000 trial samples of the new 12-sided £1 coin to industry stakeholders, for the purposes of calibrating or upgrading coin handling equipment ahead of the coin’s introduction in March 2017. “The trial pieces are marked with the word ‘trial’, do not have legal tender status, and have no redeemable value.”" https://www.thesun.co.uk/living/2770072/new-12-sided-trial-1-coins-already-selling-for-200-on-ebay-but-you-cant-spend-them-in-the-shops/ -

I came across this in the minutes of a CGS meeting in June 2015. If this information is accurate, then VIP proof Wreath crowns are not as rare as one might think. "The point was made that pricing by CGS for Proof Crowns of George V (the ‘Wreath Crowns’) where only ten may have been made did not have a significant difference to their scarcer currency counterparts (where the latter may have been produced in the thousands). Erratum: Post the meeting the following information was kindly provided by Stewart Gilbert: I had a serious conversation about a year ago with a director of a leading retail and auction company, who detected that one of my Wreath Crowns may be a proof, and it was indeed verified and graded by PCGS as a VIP Proof. So I asked the director if he had any idea how many of these Wreath VIP Proofs were minted? His professional opinion, based on his wealth of knowledge, experience and contacts at the Mint was that between 50 and 100 coins each year would have been minted for the various “V.I.P. s”. If the Mint did record the number minted at the time, then the information should be available, but I guess may be hidden away somewhere in their library? Or maybe lost during their move from London to Cardiff? So, only as a suggestion, maybe you could change 10 to between 50 and 100."

Penny Acquisition of the week
Sword replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Very nice. I am probably the only person here who don't know this but what is the web address for Rob's site? (I am guessing that he does manage a well-known retail site)
