Rare but how actually rare is it?????
Gary1000 replied to bhx7's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I didn't realise the 2p could be found in the year set, I thought it was just a couple of the advertising sets. -
clogs, die faults, et al.

The 1921 is more interesting because the flaws go under the lettering. -
Nice coins, the 1930 does worry me though. It looks like its been left in a glass of coke overnight.

Its been hit with a sharp edge, you can see the straight line where the edge stopped. -

Just think of bronze as being a very hard plastic, it will move if pushed. That's how the coin if formed in the first place. Plastic flow into the mould/die. -
Could be dipped then would not get any polish marks.

4054A 1926 Penny of highest rarity
Gary1000 replied to Chris Perkins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
When counting I usually print it out A4 size and go around with a marker counting every 10, you don't lose count that way. -

I'd love that Gouby X. £300 it's not going to happen. -
I often have to remind my 21 year old son, Google is your friend.

Honesty or knowledge
Gary1000 replied to PWA 1967's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Conversely do you tell a seller when they have a common coin they are trying to sell as a variety. There's a dealer on at the moment trying to sell a Goulby X which obviously isn't and he has dropped the price thinking it will shift. Mind you he could just be being dishonest. -

1853 Penny with Dot
Gary1000 replied to bhx7's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
My way of thinking is that a piece of debris is traped, perhaps for one strike which forms mirco cracks in the die with the effect a bit like bullet hole in a glass window. A hole in the die then starts to form as the die starts to degrade over successive strikes leaving a progressively larger dot. -
1853 Penny with Dot
Gary1000 replied to bhx7's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Also these dots can be progressive, I brought a 1946 penny with dot from ebay relying on the picture and when it arrived, no dot. Unfortunitly I sold it on but remembering back there was a roughness to the field where the dot would later form. I often wish I'd kept it now. -
Pounds, Shillings, Guineas and Florines
Gary1000 replied to guiri's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I think as horse auctions the horses are still priced in Guineas. -
I had a rare penny slabbed by CGS before putting it on ebay, the final price was still disappointing.

I've put a few bits on ebay, probably nothing for the hardened collector but you never know. http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/gazza-d/m.html?item=401024330609&ssPageName=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

Yes I gave up doing a daily search about 2 years ago. Whilst it was about 80,000 it wasn't too bad but now it's around 115-120,000 it's just another 40,000 pieces of dross to look through. If you could get everyone to list correctly it wouldn't be so bad.

£106, I think I paid about £180 for it about 5 years ago. The 3 1911 maundy coins also went for their opening bids. I was after the case when I bought them, it's just made the case a bit on the expensive side. Strangly all have gone overseas. I get the impression that unless it's something special ebay prices are quite deflated at present.

Shame to didn't bid but it's going to a good home, I think £50 is about right for that grade. Lost a lot on the 1902 crown.

I would say about right, the lion has lost his nose but there is very little other wear.
