  1. My first and only brush with an earthquake was in the Philippines about 2 years ago. We had a 6.3 out to sea some distance away, but laying in bed at about one in the morning was quiet interesting, I guess the effect was something like I imagine laying on a water bed. Everything went backwards and forwards for a second or two. Of course I used the opportunity to turn to the missus and ask her if the earth had moved for her as well but as usual she had slept through it.
  2. The problem with Nigel Farage is that he is UKIP and a bit like the dog chasing the car, If he caught it would he know what to do with it. The same has often been said about the Liberals over the years. I think the biggest problem is career politicians, just in it for what they can make.

Tgp - Good And The Bad

It does if you are the buyer and the seller is unaware of what he is selling. Do you ask for extra insurance or keep your head down and hope. Either way you could lose the coin.

No, jewellery isn't, but coins are only exempt if they are classed as "money" which numismatic items aren't. If you only got stamps, you were robbed - Special Delivery definitely covers numismatics. You should have stood your ground. Special delivery covers jewellery as well. Recorded delivery is really designed for documents and the like so you get proof of delivery. It should not be used for valuables.
  5. Just looked up that transaction, Peter, September 2011. Turns out I sold it to a certain gazza-d....
  6. When I was working on that part of my collection a I don't recall sweating over getting that example, I actually had to buy the 2339 from a split set as the 2338 was the first one I got in a set. Could have just been very lucky of course.
  7. From 1900 onwards the Maundy issues are proof-like so it's quite easy to tell. I believe, although it's not my area of collecting that earier Victorian and older becomes much more difficult.

    Edward Vii Half Crown/florin

Nope, that looks like a very nice example. I'd go for it, myself. Good luck. Looks like an impaired matt proof to me.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Another concern is that often the spoof bids come from people with large or very large feedbacks. Makes you wonder if you are missing something and decide to have some of that because the big boys are showing interest.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

But this private seller wouldn't have a leg to stand on as it'd be them guilty of misrepresentation or breach of contract as the item isn't as described. So, in this case, it doesn't matter whether private or business - he'd still have to accept the return or go to court himself. I think £400-500 would be well worth a small claims. Re-reading the auction I would say the seller has described what they are selling quiet carefully. They describe it as "looks like a William coin" not that it is a William coin. They also go on to say that it may not be silver and that you will receive what you see in the photo. Not a lot of wriggle room there.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Yes, technically. It's a binding contract and so you're legally obliged to pay. However, it's also a distance contract, which means that you will have seven working days to cancel. So it's highly unlikely any court action will occur as it would just be wasting the seller's money on fees. I thought the distance thing only applied to BIN auctions or possibly companies selling, not individuals.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Just to play devil's advocate here, what are the legalities around such bidding. Can the seller sue as a bid is a legally binding contract.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Yes unlikely he bought it as a 2+G I suppose, is he just pulling a saxby? I'd give him the benefit of the doubt except that it's still listed as obv. 2 and he says he has higher res images available on request so I don't understand why he didn't use those in the first place! Does eBay charge for the size of picture? They don't charge but I've for a long time wondered if they cut back the resolution to save on storage and bandwidth.

    Tooth Or Pearles ?

It all depends - as they say - on the variety! Tell you what, if I find all 4 varieties of 1937 penny I'll swap you for a 1922 with 1927 reverse.. That sound like a fair swap

    Gross Superstition

In my wife's culture names like Bambi and Princess for girls with Rolex for boys plus many more that we would consider odd that I can't think of at the moment are very common. My son was very nearly called Ariel after his Grandad but Ronald was eventually settled for. There's an old name for you.

    Tooth Or Pearles ?

Note to self. No more collecting varieties as it is no longer socially acceptable.

    Tooth Or Pearles ?

No, the most boring by far concerns the 1937 penny reverse. There's two MICRO-MICRO varieties, which have something to do with whether the exergue line crosses through a tooth or not. Both are equally common, and I've never even looked to see which mine is, or the proof, as I JUST DON'T CARE I not heard of the exergue example. The pointing of the P in PENNY is the usual way, P to tooth and P to gap. There's two obverse as well.
  19. As I have specialised in 20th centry predecimal I have the full date run of farthings, Half pennies and pennies. Most varieties included.
  20. Michael Freeman puts an occasional item on eBay, but is not a big seller there. I bought a Farthing Mule off of him on eBay, but it was quite a while ago. Peter Davies also puts in a show occasionally. He has bought a couple of bit from me. I can see the ticket now. Dadds 13/6/10 ebay £4.25.

    10P That Looks Like A 5P

Hahaha Hahaha Sounds like a 5p blank got mixed up with the 10ps and was struck as such. You're probably looking at £5-10. That sound a bit optimistic. Ebay seems to get very under excited about errors.

    Lost In Space

I bought through ebay in the US a 1956 1/2d in red, the rarest variety for about $11. All the boxes were ticked but not wanting to alert the seller I didn't ask for insured delivery. Of course nothing arrived and within 30 mins of my asking for conformation of postage I had a refund. I think what happens is that someone else may have spotted it and contacted the seller with an offer before they had posted the coin.

    Lost In Space

Without proof of postage the very quick offer of a refurn smell very fishy.
  24. rumpUK - i.e. what's left after Scotland departs. Don't you mean England, as Wales is a principality and NI is a province. So England is the only bit left with Country status.
