Is there such a thing as an 1859/8 Halfpenny?
Gary1000 replied to Paddy's topic in Confirmed unlisted Varieties.
Looks good enough to go on ebay, uncirculated very rare variety -
We toured the US last year with a couple, they believe all of this rubbish hook line and sinker.

This was the set I was thinking of. https://www.dnw.co.uk/auction-archive/past-catalogues/lot.php?auction_id=282&lot_id=235221 -
VIP Proof Royal Mint reply

Hi and thanks, I managed to find one which was engraved on the back of a silver 3d rather than a specially manufactured medal. -

No these were proofs. The plastic sets were currency. -

The only VIP proof set 1953 (I believe) I have seen was in a much bigger case and without the Crown, They also were of the earlier observe. -
I think it would be very difficult to tell a VIP coin in a slab, you need to pick it up and feel it. It's not just the level of frosting it's the sharpness of the strike. If I pick up my VIP crowns they are sharp in the hand, the edges, the milling etc.

I think what you need to be aware of with the satin finish crown is that it is a proof strike so there is more than the surface finish to distinguish them. -
1965 Elizabeth II British Crown (Winston Churchill) 1.0.0 (JayBart55)

I hope the satin proof that I bought from Baldwins is a satin proof. -
PR65, I have one of the three PR67 which I paid £400 at a Canadian auction, they also thought it was a VIP.

1953 frosted proof VIP/cameo/specimen saga continues
Gary1000 replied to craigy's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
My set is in a strange greeny bluey mottled cardboard case, never seen another like it. Also with the VIP if you sit it beside the set proof you can see the differenc,e and picking it up it's so sharp you would think it would cut your fingers. -
I have been beaten by a lower bid when my max was lower than the next increment.

I just hope these fool still have plenty of money left to buy my collection when I sell it in about 1 years time. I do wonder how many of these are real sales and not just wishfull thinking.

I would say that the P is either slightly clockwise of the tooth or slightly anticlockwise of the tooth. I would also suggest that if the 1 is not visible the value is going to be small ever if the rarer variety.

There was a discussion a few weeks ago about the scarcer of the two 1964 sixpence which I haven't been able to find again. I believe someone was looking for one. Anyway here is one on the bay, a bit knocked about but I'm sure would fill a gap for a while. Davies 2502

A £600 Churchill Crown
Gary1000 replied to Chris Perkins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I think I paid about £1800 around 2-3 years ago to Baldwins. Not a big profit in it yet. -
There is one 20th centre halfpenny that is very underated in it's rarity and that is the 1911 A+b shallow neck, narrow date. I have one in about Fine so it exists but I've not seen another in about 10 years of looking to upgrade.

Someone else spotted an unattributed Gouby X

I saw it and assumed that it was a Half Penny reverse so pass on. But as you say it's the later small head. -
1977 Proof Crown?
Gary1000 replied to Sleepy's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It's probably a specimen issue that came in the presentation pack. -
Looks like Obv. B P of IMP to RIGHT of bead, Rev. b E of PENNY to gap. which is F221 in currence. No proof listed as F222 is 1938.
-
Obv B Rev b unlisted by Freeman so must be an early mint of the currency.

Having spent time in a third world hostipal the NHS is up there amongst the greats. Anyone with a bad word of the NHS should try what the other half have to live with, or try and live, then see just how good the NHS is.

1902 Crown - your thoughts please
Gary1000 replied to Magpike's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
One way to tell the difference is to look at the edge lettering, the matt proof has frosting to the top surfaces of the letters whereas the currency doesn't. -
