Slabs are great for coins you can't really touch- milled proofs, or say anything above MS65 (NGC) Milled. But hammered coins are not made to be slabbed. Can't wait to crack em open...

Don't need a vibrator. Just tap it gently on one side. The coin should rotate counter clockwise if tapped on the right. ... Very slowly.., (this should work if the coin has visibly slipped )

My pleasure. It's a lovely coin. Don't mind the ragged edge. Nick -
Provenance Searching

I thought I knew that unite. Spink Auction 7018. June 27 2007 Lot 193 DNW 7 October 2003, lot 987 Look these up and the history may unfold... Good luck -
You may have a minimum sell price yourself, but no one knows the price of any coin until you have a real offer.

I like formulas. Q.. If demand is high wouldn't rarity increase? Or are demand and rarity unrelated? I'd like to see price (value) in the equation. (And remember not all rare coins have a high price because they lack desirability) Eg price=desirability/availability Since desirability is demand and rarity is built into availability

Must say there were GB bargains today, especially considering the poor Aussie dollar.
-
Fascinating and yes I be been reading about this stamp. What an expected price! If this is true about the BG Magenta becoming unique then maybe it's not an evil thing to do but a brilliant one!

Oh my safety deposit box is accessible during bank hours.
-
My bank one block away is like a mini Fort Knox. Two keys. One giant safe door and 3 sizes of deposit boxes that vary in price accordingly. There are no inspection fees and I visit 1-3 times a week depending. I guess I have a quality not quantity collection so fits into a medium box. Cost is 150GBP pa. I've usually got a coin or two at home for the microscope inspection. ..insurance would be a bomb..

Auction Houses & Online Archives
Nicholas replied to sound's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Pretty comprehensive list Tom. Coin archives is OK and has "pro" version for I think 600 Euro pa (good if your a dealer, otherwise it's way too expensive) Another site with english coinage that I can think of is Goldbergs. It has the Millennia Collection and more. -
Alternatively place your entire collection in a portable box and keep it in your banks security deposit box room for say 100-200 GBP per annum (less than insurance).

Dilemma - Opinions Solicited
Nicholas replied to jaggy's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Coming in late (Australia time) but I'd sell at that margin and given you can replace reasonably quickly. Just make sure you buy another coin with the proceeds. -
And I can say with absolute conviction that as a discerning and pragmatic coin collector that I have never ever bidded above my reserve for a coin at auction. ; )

Another influencing factor on rarity/desirability. The1934 Wreath is the "key date" for the series. In other words it will always be the rarest and therefore will always be more valuable than any price paid for any other wreath crown ever in history. (For the same coin condition for arguments sake). So I guess it's worth paying a premium for. So as the auctions continue over time the 1934 is bumped up above any price paid for another year in the wreath series.

If I was Dr Evil, I would test this theory by buying every known example of a well known rare coin and then in front of the world destroy all but one of them and then watch the market price of that unique coin. ...
-
Personally rarity is to do primarily with mintage (subtracting those melted down) and then condition. Not availability in the market. If 2000 collectors held this exact same coin and never released them to market from family generation to generation, the coin in my opinion is still not rare.

St. James Auction 5/6 March
Nicholas replied to Exbrit's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I like to the think there just wasn't a lot of gold chains around pontefract to melt down for coinage at the time. Then any pontefract unites floating around after the siege would have been melted back down. -

Question to MHCoin. What is the physical difference between the pontefract shilling and two shilling piece? They look exactly the same... Nick -

My first (and somewhat arbitrary) guess at auction houses strengths.. LON : pennies and coppers, encapsulated DNW : milled silver Spink : all rare coins but mostly hammered StJames : milled and hammered gold, Baldwins : tokens, proofs and patterns -

Interesting. Did you strategically place your coins into specifically chosen auction houses or was it somewhat arbitrary? -
