I think that decimalisation killed off a lot of young people being interested in coins. Until then you had so much history and so many interesting and historic designs passing through your hands on a daily basis...100+ year old pennies, silver back to 1816 etc, real silver, gold, bronze. Then we got this stuff.....and it coincided with the start of the increased churn of all the ripoff coins from the Royal Mint (on going) I know that when I started collecting in my mid teens in the 60's, there were loads of us doing the same thing and interested in collecting things generally, like coins, cigarette cards, bottles, pot lids, beer mats, matchbox labels, dinky cars, bird's eggs, records ...all manner of affordable things...no-one under 50 collects any of this any more (ok so, the bird's eggs thing might illegal these days). What do they collect now....porn? tatoos?...Asbo's?..........I dont know... -

What we need is new young blood.....unfortunatley very few people in their teens/20's/30's are remotely interested in coin collecting. I get quite sad when I go to coin fairs and see the same old dealers that I've been talking to (or not talking to in couple of cases) since the 1970's....(apologies to Arthur Briant if he's reading this...!)....and we're the same old blokes on these forums. -
Spink Stops Coin Dealing......
Colin88 posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
..to focus on auctions....this is in the ATG... Spink have decided to give up their retail operation in order to focus on private treaty sales. "We are not going to stock an inventory of low value coins but we'll continue to have great coins on offer in the show room for private treaty" a spokesman said. "Spink will continue to be a buyer of top quality rare and important coins" Meanwhile they have hired Bonham's specialist Eduaord Wyngaard to help develop the coin auction business and have taken on three numismatic experts ...all in Hong Kong to boost their coin and banknote business in the region. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Low value coins...pah ! we blow our noses in their direction..Mr Wyngaaard was reported as saying..allegedley .. So all you horrible little collectors who dont have tens of thousands to spend in a Coutts account can F off..particularly if you are UK based...and there's nothing at all wrong with our online auction site so you can stop all that complaining immediately....a spokesman said. -

I've Long Wondered The Mintage Of The 1935 Specimen Crown
Colin88 replied to Gary D's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
There's a nice 1935 in the DNW sale next week if you want one....its on the front cover...estimate £400 - £500 which seems fair as I saw one sell on eBay for £626 when I was looking for one...which I eventually bought one off Spink funnily enough...in those soon to be forgotten days when they were interested in coins. -

If this forum is representative of the collector base then we are exactly the type of people that Spink are saying they dont want. -
Coins Of England 2014
Colin88 replied to Nick's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I just had a look and all they have is the 2013 edition. It still costs £17.99 What's more, it's advertised as a hardback. Wonder how THAT gets down the phoneline? I had the same problem when I downloaded a couple of books to read on holiday. I almost clicked on the 'hardback' download for £21.99, before I noticed the £4.99 'paperback' alternative! I wonder how many people have thrown money away on that? Am I missing something here? I have never downloaded a book to iTunes so I probably am, but what the smeg is the difference between a 'hardback' download and a 'paperback' download?!As I discovered, absolutely nothing but the price! All downloads should be at the lower price, but sometimes errors are made.Well when it is released I will download it and let you know what I think !! With regard to Spink not doing numismatic circulars, they realise that they make far more money from auction, they don't have to outlay any capital and if something doesn't sell they hand it back!! They used to have a lot of staff when they were doing the numismatic circular and when you take the frequency of their circulars and the amount of stock on each one I could never believe they were able to cover all those London salaries!! Therefore someone looked at the whole operation and thought we will save a lot of money if we run a skeleton staff and focus on the auctions!! That makes business sense I guess. A few years ago when I was far better disposed financially, I remember having serious discussions with a friend of mine who had £millions of disposal income and was, bored about approaching Spink with a view to buying it. It started as pub talk then it dawned on us that we could make it happen. The furthest we got was talking to Paul Dawson about it....who basically said "get to the back of the queue" as there were any number of people in our position who would like to buy it !....but it wasn't then nor is it now, for sale. (I'm sure if Peter Simon had had a rummage at the back of his sofa he would have found enough loose change to have bought it).. -

I think Spink's attitude to coins and coin collectors alike is summed up by the fact that the owner has gone to live permanently in Hong Kong...its a pity he doesnt want to sell it and to sel it to someone who at least seems interested in coins. It appears that the only interest they have is banknotes and stamps....certainly not coins and coin collectors. Their website and anything to do with IT is and always has been a complete shambles. I was optimisitic when Mike Vessid joined up but that doesnt seem to have made any difference at all coinwise. -
There are not one but THREE big coin auctions coming up within 2 days of each other in December and two on the same day. London Coins and DNW on the 3rd December and Spink on the 5th December. This smacks of rank stupidy on all their parts...how on earth does this help their businesses?...it certainly doesnt help collectors or buyers or sellers.

You're right about that...I'm very surprised that London Coins are still in the quill pen age...it must affect their business by not being online. -

Some very nice coins in there (should have taken the 1917 Sov out really) There's a stunning MS65 02 Low Tide Halfpenny that I might have been tempted on. (Just got back from a 3 day break in Peasemore ..very unlucky with the local walking distance pub...Doesnt open on Mondays, doesnt do food on a Tuesday and only open for 45 minutes on Wednesday night as they were all going to a bonfire night?...this is why I could never live in the country)! -

Cars And Coins - Tomorrow In London
Colin88 posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
There's the Coin Fair at the Holiday Inn in Bloomsbury tomorrow (Saturday) and Regent Street will be closed from 10 - 5pm for the annual RAC Club car fest...hundreds of cars from Veteran to Supercars will be on show in Regent Street (free). A good day out for the boys I would suggest. -
Cars And Coins - Tomorrow In London
Colin88 replied to Colin88's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
A beautiful sunny day in town...I spent a tad too long looking at the cars....I got to the Holiday Inn Coin Fair at 3pm ....almost everyone had packed up and gone ...just a few stragglers left in the rooms. Hopefully none of them will stop off at the pub on the way home with the stock in the car..... (As an aside, what was disappointing was that there were so few people wearing poppies...and of those virtually no-one seemingly under 40ish. I guess if Milliband the Red gets in next time that will be the end of it anyway along with any form of Christianity..) -

Its just so wrong and has so many suspect elements identified. Stephen really has to withdraw it from this sale until proven unequivocally kosher. -
