  1. Joan E Allen died only a few years back. She was ancient.
  2. There is an even better 1863 florin coming up for auction at DNW in September. I wouldn't be suprised if this one goes for well in excess of £5k. Pretty common these high grade 1863 florins then...?....ive got one, vicksilver's got one,Rob's got one, i know of there wheareabouts of 2 others and they are appearing regularly at auction....I hope old Ho chi min hasnt been knocking them out in his garage......?
  3. That's just over £21 each. And you've got to find 2794 collectors of farthings, who haven't already got one, or who are prepared to trade up in grade. That's a very long term investment. That is absolutely astonishing that anyone would pay that for them...even with the interesting story / history behind them.

    1862 Penny

Dear god.....how do they get away with it?.....never mind a few dealers overgrading this borders on being fraudulent....especially as it appears to be the same US company repeating the same misattributions.....( is that a word?...or did I make that up?)

    1862 Penny

100% not a mule.....how do they get away with that.?.....and whoever does the attribution really shouldnt be working there.......
  6. Great minds think alike! I was just going to reply to Tom's earlier post with "Just a cotton pickin' moment there Muskie - wouldn't Coincraft just LOVE to feature them in that there Phoenix newspappy? Along with the slogan We Just Found A Very Limited Supply Of This Flawless 'Bun Farthing' - RARE In This Condition!! At Just £49.99 each We Are Letting Them Go At Just Half Of The Spink Catalogue Price!!!". Many many years ago, I did a small lecture tour on the "history of British Coins" to some of the more deprived schools in the East End of London..I jazzed it up a bit, I think it went well...I kept in touch for a while with some of them who really got into it and I tried to help them with their new found interest...(I suppose now I would have had to wear a hi-viz jacket or have been accused of being a paedophile). Anyway I contacted all the main dealers at the time and told them what I was doing and asked them if they could send me any pre decimal coins / cheap hammered / roman, anything really that I could distribute to the kids after my talks....they all responded..some brilliantly like Roy Norbury (West Essex Coins)...who gave me so much stuff ..the Royal Mint sent me a huge package of display materials...everyone chipped in....dear old Richard Lobel, sent me a price list...(perhaps he misunderstood!)
  7. Richard Lobel of Coincraft will probably buy them and stick them in his 'Phoenix' newspaper list and sell them to his huge global customer base at £50 each for the next 10 years....I've always wanted to know who buys his coins at those prices??
  8. I've sold a few times recently to Hatton Garden Metals...in my personal experience they are very easy to deal with, are consistently one of the top if not the top payers of the online bullion dealers (although they do have a large 5 storey building in Hatton Garden..so not some dodgy looking P.O box address)and the money is in your account on the day that they receive it. Matt and Gary the owners appear to be decent chaps too.
  9. He!s not the largest coin dealer in the world.....he clearly has no idea how to handle proof coins...he must be nearly 90......absolute twaddle.....
  10. Tom........brilliant......thanks....Colin
  11. .........I dont at all.... I sold a few coins over the last few months and keep getting these random invoice amounts from eBay that I can't make any sense of .....and there's no easy, inexpensive way of talking to a human being there about the amounts....are they part of Vodafone mobile as I seem to have an identical problem with them?
  12. That is not a 1963 proof penny.....respected US dealer or not.
  13. typo......should say....".......if anyone wants a genuine one PM me...."
  14. 100% percent fake...not a bad one but I've seen better.......i anyone wants a genuine one PM me.....
  15. Isn’t it ironic that probably the world’s best known coin dealers don’t actually sell any coins on-line. Just books..
  16. Yup, in 1998 (the year before Ferrari took control) I bought a brand new Maserati Ghibli for £54k...(never get drunk at a motor show with a credit card.)...sold it 2 years later for £16k...absolute rubbish car...everything went wrong or fell off or didnt fit...hole in the petrol tank, top of gear knob fell off twice, boot lid never fitted correcly, drivers window stuck down...lozenge shaped Maserati clock fell off out of the dash !??...and thats what I can remember....you dont get that with a Gothic Crown.
  17. The build quality of 'new' Mercs are not what they used to be I am reliably informed by a friend of mine who owns one of the largest bodyshop repairers in the South....one of my cars is a 19 year old 993 Turbo which is my everyday car...its hewn out of granite, appears to be bullet proof and other than brake pads, oil, rear tyres (every 6 - 8k miles oops although tyre prices for the car have tumbled in the time too)...and a few not really that expensive bits and bobs its never let me down badly, sailed through the last 5 MOTs and has actually gone up in value in the 8 years that I've had it.......all in all its probably worked out cheaper to maintain than a Ford escort....(apart from the petrol that is)!
  18. Given that that Crown is actually a cracker...what would you estimate would be the top price you would get for it in USD ....around $23,000 ?
  19. I hope that I can upload this close up picture.......nope...too big....why is it sooo difficult on this forum ??

    more FAKES

The other very scary thing in collecting is the growing number of slabbed fakes.....that is, not just the coin but the TPG slab is a fake too....
  21. There's not a bag of them but about 25 of them were struck (forged) during that period in the 70's/80's by the same person(s)....who, I am told, is alledgedly still around.
  22. The Chinese copies of the gold $20 are the scariest....you cannot tell from a photo..you have to have it in hand...its all about the look and the feel of the rim....I would also leave them well alone.....I'm sure Ed Milliband is a Chinese copy...he just doesnt look right at all.........
  23. Its very scary....i suspect the Chinese have already sorted out the problems...the 1905 fake shillings are much easier to spot......personally I would avoid the 05 halfcrowns in high grade...even well known dealers have been fooled, believe me......stick to the 03 for the time being .. Apologies to all you techies out there....i am an old dog....still, I havent done too badly.....woof
  24. I've sent the close up to "Numismatist" and have asked him if he could kindly upload the image of the 1905 Halfcrown forgery in my behalf...so, thank you in advance.
