  1. A small house for £80k?....sadly ,.not even a garage in my part of the country....

    "1933 Penny"

I was thinking it might make 6 figures, even in 'about fine' - not that grade would be as big a consideration as normal! Imagine the kudos if you owned one that was universally agreed to be genuine ... sky's the limit! I would guess £85k+Bernie was offering his at £52k several years ago I seem to remember.......its £100k+ today without a doubt.....
  3. I have to ask why?......conservatively its going to cost £100m to change all the coin machines.....still, thats £138m less than we gave to Somalia in aid....and only 10% of what we gave to India for their space program....sorry, I meant in aid....
  4. Nothing for me there but quite an interesting and eclectic collections of coins / medals and odd stuff...I might have a punt at the Alfred penny...dunno why really, I just like the look of it.....and maybe I'll get £85,000 for it on eBay..??
  5. The only thing that eBAy know about is fees...I am a specialist in an another area of collecting and have reported many people (almost all in the US which is mainly where they are collected) for blatant misrepresenation...not on one single occasion has eBay done anything about it....

Jeez Tom....what end of the telescope are these people looking down?...talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill...they clearly have no sense of perspective...tend to agree with Azda that the US think they own the planet when in fact its really the Chinese....
  7. Fairly much ....also did well with DNW on foreign , particularly the gold....I never was much of a fan of Baldwins...when I was a young less well off collector I always found them aloof and arrogant....so for the best part of 40 Years I chose never to spend a penny with them...

...you can have Nick Clegg any time....what about if we swapped our UK Government with the Polish Government?....they'd work twice as hard for half the money.....voila, sorted !
  9. I've just called them and told them to turn it off and turn it on again.....that'll fix it.
  10. Well, I like to think it was mostly strategic inasmuch as over the years of buying and selling with these companies, I had what I personally considered to be a reasonable view of what I believed to be the strenghts and weaknesses of each of these auction houses, in relation to what I was selling...also they were all amenable to doing a deal as the value of the total consignments in each case was quite high. Also, part of me didnt want to put all my retirement fund in one basket ....I did some due diligence, as best I could, on each of them in terms of their financial situations. You can never take that for granted these days ..especially as the sales process is quite prolonged...i.e you have to consign a month or two prior to auction then you have to wait another month or so to get paid...and then they all pay by cheque so another period before clearance....you are waiting 3 - 4 months to get your money....a lot can and does happen in that time....so I figured it would be unlikely that all 4 of them would go bust at the same time ! Overall I was pleased that I did consign the majority of the collection to auction and certainly regretted not selling all my coins through auction as the ones that I sold privately in the early days to dealers and collectors a like,I realised was a financial mistake in terms of selling them too cheaply...I could have got a lot more at auction. PM me if you want to know any more.
  11. Sorry for your trouble...but a word of advice...dont mention the "P" word on this site..as in making a profit....they dont like it.....

........and yet, I bought "industrial grade plutonium" off eBay and no problem paying with Paypal...oops
  13. Their I.T. function / department is the worst...dont even try to talk to them either ....the totally bored sounding Eastern European bloke that you always have to speak to clearly should be doing something else as in my experience he shows no interest at all in what you are saying to him, mind you, thats probably the corporate line as the other bloke who owns Spink has no interest in UK coin collectors either......I really miss Paul Dawson.! Anyway, I have to say that there are a few some nice pieces in this sale....I sold my entire 40 year collection last year between DNW / LCN / SPINK / St James's (I like to spread the love...) to fund my retirement and I said, "thats it, no more coins".......well, that didnt last long...
  14. What do you think?...on close up the 'lightly rubbed area under chin' is actually a group of dinks....pity , its a nice coin....the one MP sold to MR recently was the best one i've seen for years....still looking then..
  15. Mark Rasmussen isnt that elusive and if my information is correct then he bought that halfcrown very cheaply , well under the price it was on for on eBay....it was probably the finest example any of us will see in many a year....MP must have bought it extremely cheaply to let it go at that price......

Good Fine Mule £875 Any Takers?

Mine went for £200 at the last LCN sale...similar grade but with a small edge knock....well, more of a flick than a knock really... and they arent that rare in the lower grades....
  17. I am interested in some coins that a provincial auction house has in their next sale...(here's a clue...Chaucer wrote a tale about the town)...picture quality dreadful, only showing one side and not the other...but that's not the point. Its the juice....Buyers premium 20% + Vat, Credit Card payment 2.5% charge, Online bidding surcharge of 3% + Vat... I think they're missing a trick, I'm sure that they could calculate the amount of air that we breathe whilst bidding and could charge accordingly....and what about maybe a height tax...say 5% premium for bidders over 3ft 6" which would arguably be a very fair charge as it would affect women and children less. They could charge a "pay per view"...say £1 every time you had the priveledge of viewing their catalgue online? Maybe a charge of 1% + vat of the hammer price for each of your incremental bids, irrespective of whether you win the lot or not? ..and a tax on bidders living in the South? , similar to the Stamp Duty tax which is effectively a tax on people living South of Watford.. but I digress..........
  18. Thats very kind of you thank you...but I've lost heart in that sale. They've not responded to emails and as you say they really arent interested in doing anything so you really have to go there....and as I will very soon need subaqua gear to leave the house I'll give the Cantabury gig a miss...although some of those Young Head Unc..ish penny lots look worth a punt...the lots with the 1864 and 1868 would be worth a view...but as they cant be arsed then nor can I. I emailed 3 days ago asking for photos but haven't even had a reply, so I phoned and very much got the impression that viewing in person is the only option. I'd offer to look at the farthings for you, but my knowledge in that area is somewhat limited. If you want a photo of a particular coin I'll do my best with a camera when I'm there.
  19. I had a genuine cupro-nickel penny dated 1945....I dont think that I ever took a photo of it but I can assure you that it didnt look anything like that...I sold it for £460 several years ago.

    New Coin Designs For 2014

Absolutely agree...comedy coins. Designed with no sense of thought for the occasion or any gravitas....still, it ticks all the PC boxes.. ...
  22. Good luck with anyone making an offer....the selller is French....in my experience of buying antiques and coins in France is that they would rather starve and put their families out on the the street than reduce the price by 1 euro...probably the least entrepreneurial people to deal with......yup, I know it's a generalisation but thats my experience......
  23. I absolutely do not get nor have ever got the provenance thing. Do I actually care a tinker's groat (thats was quite a lot of money to a tinker, right?) who owned a coin before me or which collection it came from?.....am I ever going to pay a premium over what I'm prepared to pay for a coin because some other collector had it............no I'm not.
