  1. As you know, varieties are not my speciality, but I would say P is to a tooth - just to the left of centre on it, which seems to match with the example on the headsntails14 website. First one of date is also directly over a tooth, so I think this makes it Freeman Reverse A?
  2. Or just more gew-gaws, as they have been for the last few years.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I have no time for him or his illegal practices. (Shill bidding is actually a criminal offence.) But to point out - the reason virtually no one uses reserves on Ebay any more is because they charge a substantial percentage of the reserve in fees, even if your item does not sell.
  4. Picked up this amongst a bag of otherwise junk and modern stuff yesterday. Slight upgrade for me and always nice to get one of the scarcer ones: 1875 H Penny, Dies 8 + J, F85 I believe:

    more FAKES

I would say fake - this has some of the characteristics of the fakes discussed on this forum about a year ago. The dents in the second one of the date and in the neck above look very familiar. Is the orientation right? These should be medal alignment, but the fakes were coin aligned.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Has been ended by the seller - hopefully because they learnt from their mistake.
  7. I had this brought to me in the market today. I think I have it right as Henry III voided Long Cross of Class 5 and by Ion of Canterbury, but I am not sure which sub-class. Can someone please help me?
  8. Thanks very much for that @JLS - that suits me fine. Apart from the damage to part of the portrait, quite a decent coin I thought.
  9. This topic is supposed to be "Stuff to make us laugh" but seems to have veered once more into the very unfunny political arena.
  10. Seems to be back now - must have been a temporary glitch.
  11. I've just been trying to get back into the auction to see how it is progressing - every link I can find, including starting from scratch via Google times out without getting to any part of their website. If I wrote it down correctly the coin lots finish tomorrow? There were a couple I might have bid on if they had stayed cheap enough, but looks like that is out now.

    Pictures

Been sorting through some of my old photos from the Falklands and scanning some of them in. I rather liked this one - an old wreck hull being used partially as a storage warehouse by the locals:

Car boot sales/markets in West Wales

I can't help you much with Wales but I am sure you will find some. If you ever do the South West of England I can help you with lots of suggestions.
  14. I believe it is illegal for an auctioneer to negotiate a reduced buyer's commission as that creates an uneven playing field. Maybe they were prepared to discuss a reduced reserve with the vendor? Seller's commission rates are negotiable - worth bearing in mind if you are selling good items that the auctioneer would be glad to have in their catalogue.
  15. My confidence falls further - lot 179 described as 1772 Halfpenny, picture of two 1799 halfpennies...

    CNG 360 degree views

Interesting story on this old Roman coin from Carausius - now coming up for auction: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-48583329
  17. Interesting discussion here on the lowest buying power of any British coin in circulation: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-48153442 They start their measure from Queen Anne's reign and the farthing, which is a little odd as the only farthing made in that reign I understood was only really a pattern? Also, they make no mention of the third and quarter farthing coins, which I suppose is more reasonable as these coins were really intended for colonial use, although legal tender in the UK as I understand it.
  18. I think it must be, although his Wikipedia entry makes no mention of that book, when you search on Amazon the title comes up with both Terry Pratchett and Gray Jolliffe on the cover. GJ is best known (apparently) for his Wicked Willie series...
  19. I think 7% is likely to be right. A lot of what we think of as imported cheeses are actually now made in the UK. Certainly much supermarket Brie and Camembert is made in Somerset. I suspect most Feta and Halloumi is also now UK made.

    Coin Cabinet for sale

I have this coin cabinet for sale if anyone is interested. I understand it is a Nichols type "Standard Annulet" in good condition with keys. It has red felts in all but a handful of slots. Trays range in size from Crown size down to about sixpence - if it is important I can get a full break down. I am after £85 including delivery within the UK.
  21. Another from Gray Joliffe - he certainly seems to have the knack for the double take joke!
  22. I agree - I do not doubt the collectability of the 1714 farthing, just that, as it was not really in circulation, it seems odd to quote its value in this discussion. But I do not really expect a BBC reporter to be much interested in such finer points. I was more interested in the article - and the graphs in particular.
  23. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-48392141 Article from the BBC - RM selling off an 1819 Sovereign for £100,000.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Not sure it has sold - or else the seller has several identical (which would not be unlikely!). Original listing now has message saying the seller has relisted and that link takes you to this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/173912699137?ViewItem=&item=173912699137
  25. Others have probably found this already, but in case you haven't, their website does now have comprehensive circulation figures for decimal coins up to 2017 - all denominations. Their own search engine doesn't seem to find it well so here is the link: https://www.royalmint.com/currency/uk-currency/mintages/
