Stuff to Make Us Laugh
Paddy replied to Madness's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
This one made me chuckle - I love it when it takes a moment for the penny to drop: -
Yes I could keep both - but I already have a third 8+H in a lesser grade that I ought to move on! As to outlay, the new one cost me only £7 including commission, so I think I did OK either way.
-
I am still battling with all these varieties, but as I understand it a reverse J (as opposed to Ja) on an 1875 penny would be an as yet unrecorded combination. This according to @secret santa 's website. So I would be delighted if one of them is a J! 😁

Yes - I liked the better detail, but this is offset by the damage to the rim and below the bust...
-
... and this is the one currently holding the space:
-
I picked up another 1875 penny over the weekend - I believe Dies 8+H (Gouby Ja) F80. The question is do I keep this one, or the present incumbent in the subsequent post? Here is the new one:

Predecimal coins in change - When did you last see...
Paddy replied to Sylvester's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I got a 1912 Half Sovereign in change in place of a penny in about 2005 - but I guess that doesn't really count! -
... and if you were any doubt about the falseness of the toning, have a look at how many other exorbitantly coloured examples of very ordinary cheap coins he has for sale!
-
Interesting BBC article on mintage figures etc, particularly about the 2017 figures for 20p and £2 coins: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-48201920

403 Error (too) on profile update
Paddy replied to Pavel's topic in Forum technical help and support
The "Not Secure" is normal for this site. It is because it is an http site not an https site. The latter I believe costs more and is really only essential if handling personal or financial data. I think this has been discussed before somewhere on here. -
Well either he is watching this forum (welcome by the way!) or someone has messaged him as the "Toned Proof" claim has gone. Now described simply as AEF - still an overgrade but a bit closer.

Help for the digitally challenged please
Paddy replied to Rob's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
I am sure you don't really want to switch browsers but I use Chrome with Adaware, which is free and works fine. If you are using something other than Adaware you might try that with Firefox. -
It has been mentioned before that some woods have a greater effect on toning than others - what wood is your bookshelf made of? I don't know all the options but I seem to recall Mahogany is good, oak not so good, and pine very bad...

1928 halfcrown obverses
Paddy replied to Mr T's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Just tried it and it fails that test! Maybe we are back to a Obverse 1. I was only going on the pictures in the Onedrive link... -
I picked up two lots from the DNW sale on Wednesday - they arrived today. Here are the tickets that came with them - hopefully someone can tell me what these signify?

1928 halfcrown obverses
Paddy replied to Mr T's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I went more on the ones in the onedrive link further up - the more rounded forehead seems to be the most obvious difference. In the Onedrive link the rims do not (to me) look any different. -
1928 halfcrown obverses
Paddy replied to Mr T's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Thanks to the onedrive link I THINK I can say that this is 2+B - please correct me if I am wrong. This is the one in my collection - full size images in my onedrive if anyone needs them. -
There is an option to report as "Witness" which I think would apply in this case. I don't know enough about the topic to report I fear...
-
As Ebay are refusing to take action, is it time to report to Action Fraud? Has anyone set up a login with them? https://reporting.actionfraud.police.uk/login I haven't followed the whole story, so maybe someone who has would like to pick this up?
-
Yes - and also why the Northern Ireland 2002 £2 coin is deemed so much scarcer than the others?
-
Actually, mycopau was quite clever to leave a positive feedback that made it clear the coin was a copy. As a regular seller, she can contact Ebay over negative or neutral feedbacks and get them removed if she can make a case for why they should be. But positive feedback - why should Ebay even discuss getting that taken down! Well done mycopau! 😄

Still waiting.... 😁

There used to be another similar - not sure if it is still going - at Wookey Hole near Wells in Somerset. I've got another 20Kg...
-
Speaking of which, anyone know what happened with Dr Larry? Not seen or heard of him on here for many months now...
-
No - no response at all. Disappointed in DNW - they are usually better than that.
