  1. Hi all, I bought this 1858 penny a few weeks ago and have been studying the forum for answers but I am not convinced as to what variety if any it is. The 1858 appears to be overstruck on another 1858 I think, but the GRATIA also appears double struck?? I have checked against an 1854 and on the 1854 the DEI GRATIA all appears to be double struck! Vicky pennies are confusing!!!!!! So I am asking again for the experts help!

    1911 Pennies

Oh Crap! I was considering this the other day! Was considering taking the penny collection back to Edgar so the album would span a millennia although the price of some of the hammered pennies scares the hell out of me! Mm I wonder if could slip those under Mrs J's radar !

    Want, want, WANT!

Punch 1957 halfpenny into ebay search and they crop up.They are not rare but have 4 varieties. Thanks Peter, Was looking yesterday and didn't find any that fit the bill as it were, but I have a search saved just waiting on the right one I suppose, damn I have become picky to say the least! 1911 Pennies

I know this is resurrecting an old thread, but thought it best to post here rather than start a new topic! I was searching through a bulk load that I got ages ago just to make sure I hadn't missed anything (already found a low grade low tide penny but that was all), and I had only two 1911 pennies in the whole lot and almost didn't bother checking! So for the experts is the one on the left a hollow neck as the I in BRITT points to a tooth?

    Want, want, WANT!

I may, but the question is "where". If I don't reply within a week, please assume what I was looking for hasn't turned up (I may even have sold my spares to Chris a few years ago, but I'll look out for you). Clearly, anything "I was after" I have now either acquired or no longer have an interest in obtaining. Surely, you mean, "anything I were after" Thanks Peckris!

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Ahem! Now that is one impressive gem! I have added it to my watch list for a laugh! I wonder how excited he will get if we all added it to our watch lists then ignored it of course? Although we wont get to see his reaction the thought of it has made me smile!

Apparently a Proof also. All the shite you need from 1 auction I do wish he hadn't listed it with the mouse over zoom facility. That came as a nasty shock. I wonder if he has received any nice messages since he listed the item?

    Want, want, WANT!

Hi all, I am looking to complete my QEII collection and I am missing a good 1957 calm sea 1/2d. Does anyone have a spare or one they would like to sell? The ones I have found so far are not clean enough although the grade is there in some of them. Preferably in EF but would be happy with a good clean VF. Regards

iCollect Coins & Tokens for Mac

For $25 I like iCollect and I am sure it will get better with newer versions. At that price it is very good value for money. It is just the idea of having to re-key my entire collection which is almost a thousand sixpences not to mention a good number of other coins. Holy hell! Thats a lot of typing!!!!! Well for me its only about 300! I even think thats quite a lot. I have been looking at Bento and it looks very good, I like the fact I can sync to the iphone which means the collection is at my fingertips and means I wont buy a coin when out and about that I already have or one not on my list ( a really bloody annoying trait; oh that looks nice !!!). I am still undecided but I am having a go at messing around with icollect and have a good look into bento. Just wanted to say that I do appreciate you drawing my attention to iCollect. Your welcome Jaggy, Just to draw your attention to what Peckris was advising I have managed to get a demo going of Bento 4 and have found a coin catalogue template, this is fully editable on Bento and you can drag and drop pictures into the template as well. This is the coin template My Bento 2 Coin template Although I can import from excel into a blank spreadsheet on Bento I tried to import directly to the coin template, no luck so far, something to do with the fields probably. Maybe it would be easier to go back to a notebook and pen !!!! I will keep messing and see what works for me. Yeah - when you import from one FMP database into another, you can get into a muddle with fields that aren't named the same. It's probably the same with Excel > Bento (a column in Excel = a field in BEnto). OR, it may be to do with the fact that the template was designed by an external user, not provided by Bento directly (though why that should interfere with basic functionality is anyone's guess). I notice there is a "Chicken Records" template also More Bernard Matthews than Col. Sanders I should think! I have managed to get the import sorted I think, field names was the issue, and have got my running totals up OUCH!!!! Well I did have them up on excel but I never paid attention to thescroll to the bottom of each sheet! As to the templates each to their own but some of the templates I have had only one thing pop into my head; Really????????? At the minute I am swaying towards Bento its really easy to use and I still love the fact that you can sync it with your iPhone. Many thanks for bringing this to my attention Peckris. You're welcome One more (apocryphal?) Churchill story to add to your signature - on being shown a memo advising on the correct use of English, e.g. not ending sentences with a preposition, Churchill scrawled in the margin "This is the kind of nonsense up with which I shall not put" ! Duly edited! I do like the nature of some quotes I have read a little into the history of the quotes in my signature and some have been used in one form or another fro over a hundred years prior to Churchill, maybe he did say it maybe not, but he had the character and wit to pull it off I think!
  12. Hi all, I have been currently excel spreadsheeting my catalogue and I came across this software, I have been using the demo download and it seems to be working really well, I like the display of your coin pictures as you click on each reference. The reason I am considering buying the full program is, it appears to be really user friendly and although not designed I can also include my medal collection in this too! My question is does anyone have the full version? If so do you use it and whats your opinion? Regards Oh yeah the link might be a tad helpful! Here we go Vee Eye

iCollect Coins & Tokens for Mac

    1. I think the original question wanted to know if it is a database of British coins? Which would be pretty damn useful, and a computerised Spink if such a thing exists. "A database that's already been set up" in this case is simply a blank pro-forma into which you input your own coins, right? (Which is what mine is - it all had to be input by hand, and new coins added manually). 2. Not as long as you might think. I used to be a computer programmer, and FileMaker's scripting language (which no user HAS to use - you can set up a working database without any knowledge of scripting at all) is fairly simple and basic. It's just knowing how to do what you want to do, which I suppose is the same in any computer language. Being a relational database, I have a separate table of values for each coin, and simply add a new record for each coin when values change. Then in the master database, I have a layout with a portal to the related file which pulls in all the values it has for each coin. When I said "going back to the 60s", that doesn't mean every year! I have 1965/6, 1968/9, 1976, 1980, 1985, 1997/8, and every few years from 2000 to the present. The critical periods were from the late 60s to 1980, then it subsided and stagnated for ages, and started to take off again from the late 90s. Sorry Peckris, I meant it was an empty blank database with which you would have to enter the data, I believe that you would have to collate from a few sources though. Your second answer makes a lot more sense now! It must be nice to see the appreciation in value of certain coins? Jaggy I wholeheartedly agree with your pros and cons, are you making the switch then? Regards

The database is already set up, although simple it allows all fields to customised ie changing dollars to pounds etc. There is a huge amount of fields that you can input data into or keep it as simple as possible. It works well in that you can add your categories and sub categories and even more types than just Coins or Tokens. God I sound like a salesman! So far I have inputed my demo limit 5 coins and filled out as many fields as I could to test the search function, which worked pretty well, I think I have been drawn to it as it it is a database thats already been set up and looks pretty flash too. It has more fields than I currently use on excel which may take me a while to fill out but it does have a nice clone feature which aids in entering coins of the same type denomination which I fund pretty useful. It does have most of the fields that you mentioned Peckris apart from the complex calculation showing values back to the 1960's, wow! How long did that take to set up? I think I will try a few foreign coins and maybe some medals and see what happens. Thanks for the replies guys.
  19. Hi all, I have just seen this and was wondering what it was? Some sort of paperweight perhaps, I have not seen any others about and google is not being very helpful at the moment! Cheers, J
  20. Thanks for the interest VS, I might be sending a PM soon, but I have emailed a few people to get some more answers first, as I am a wee bit intrigued to say the least! A couple of extra pictures, Its approx 114mm in diameter, 21mm thick and weighs approx 580 grams, it also appears to be possibly made of brass? I am awaiting a reply from a few sources including the Mint but I am sure I may be waiting a while!

Well sorry to interrupt the trip down memory lane which I whole heartedly agree with, my best friend ran a farm and I remember trying to help herd the sheep for dipping on a number of occasions or attempting to catch the ram!!! Ouch if you got the timing wrong! Oh I was meant to be interrupting the nostalgia! Mmmmmm who believes this description? I must get this seller to make a step by step guide on how to take fantastic pictures! Awesome 1919KN for sale Ha Ha!

    Newbie with a quandary!

Hi all, Well I have been reading the posts now for a few weeks and since I registered I have hit a quandary of sorts! I thought I should write my thoughts down so to speak! I initially started collecting around 9 months ago. I started by way of the good old whitman folders and had the complete set bar one. I then noticed a few coins had turned a wee bit nasty in the folders and decided the move to albums was needed, which I built myself. All coins were acetone bathed before being sealed in 2x2's. This has proved to be a much better way of storing and seeing the coins. I started collecting GB pre-decimal as per the whitman folders which was fun, but I initially did buy quite a few fair/worn coins to fill the gaps. I then moved onto third reich coins and US coins as well. With those collections I know exactly were I am going and what I am collecting. The quandary lies within my three GB folders. My initial plan was to collect year sets from 1880 to 1980 (the 100 years prior to and including my birth year. My QEII folder is full now from 1953-1980 and a lot is of EF of better, apart from the sixpences, florins and half crowns which are currently VF (although this does not bother me much). The album pages from 1880 til around 1930 are a bit lacking apart from mostly farthings (most are EF/aUnc or Unc) or the pennies which was the first folders I filled! My quandary is this, do I extend good ole Liz up until present and then concentrate on just pennies prior to 1953 as I seem to gravitate towards the big shinny bronze ones or do I stick with what I am doing? the main reason is that the price of most shillings, florins and half crowns prior to George VI are quite high and I don't think I could justify the cost! I know some pennies are not cheap but as they contain no bullion the lower end of the grades even in some of the rarer ones are a lot more acceptable to me (and the long haired colonel of course!). Also by selling what I have accumulated in farthings, half-pennys and threepences etc I could get quite a few pennies in return! I know its my choice but as a newbie I would like to hear the thoughts of the more experienced, what would you do, how many times have you changed your mind and is it likely to happen throughout my life of collecting? Regards Justin
