Thank you for looking -
Hi Does anyone happen to have a copy of this catalogue ? I have a superb Aberystwyth Halfcrown with a stiking split and i'm trying to find its provenance ? I know that there was one matching this desciption (Lot 119) in that sale but i wondered whether there might perhaps be an illustration Many thanks

Cumberland clark Catalogue

This is the coin in question. Previously sold by Lloyd Bennett in August 2006 for £3,250 (HC850-554) -
That was one of my favorites in the sale, although it went above my expectations. Are you pleased with it ? I'm sure you have already noticed but there are a few red wax deposits on both the obverse and reverse

That's interesting. considering you were at the sale and are well informed it would help if you could expand further please. Infact there were two their often bidding against each other. The main one bought most of the expensive coins offered. Without wishing to name names, "bidder 61" a virtually unknown figure at the start of the sale, sat in the corner and pratically bought all of the top end coins, like the 1820 gold five pounds, the Anne five guineas, the 1699 five guineas etc etc. I would hate to guess just how much he spent in the end. Both "bidder 61" and a Japanese buyer literally chased up the prices on all of the so called star coins of the sale. As investors they seemed to have, like someone mentioned earlier, a criteria of high grade and rare material only. There bidding patterns reminded me of such as on storage wars where one would shout £5000 the the next £10,000. Ultimately these two buyer won't effect the collectors markets which most of us on here are involved in. They aren't interested in normal every day pieces.

Funnily enough the biggest buyer of the day at the slaney sale was a representative of an consortium. Infact there were two their often bidding against each other. The main one bought most of the expensive coins offered.

Yes Roderick (or roddie) was there, pretty much every dealer was. Not a fan of Richard bishops insistence of announcing the bidders names. David guest did buy an awful lot at the sale but having spoke with him after the sale, only one piece was for stock the rest was on behalf of his clients. This was the case for most of us on the day. I ended up with 3 pieces - 2 for clients and one for stock.

Yesterday was an extremely draining auction, considering there was only a few hundred lots it sure dragged on., I attended the sale with the intention of hopefully buying 8 or 9 lots but came away with just 2. I wasn't surprised to see the BIG coins fetching high figures but what did really shock me was the amount the normal everyday coins were selling for. I looked at each lot before the sale and a large proportion of the milled silver section was to say the least poor yet people seemed to be willing to bid excessively over the odds to obtain these coins.

Looks like we all underestimated this one ...... Its just sold for £46,000 Hammer
-
I think that was for sale at about £40,000
-
Not too sure i would guess by the end of the week. I agree its very late in the day to release the catalogue.
-
No but i know the young auctioneer there, and he sent me the pictures when it was consigned a few months back. Its gave me just enough time to re mortgage the house haha
-
It was bought in "by an old lady who said its has been passed down from generation to generation." Its think it will exceed £30,000 hammer

Large Victoria £5 Coin/Medal
mhcoins replied to ColourOD's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Its a reproduction of the UNA and lion but on a large scale, which i think are in either plated gold or plated silver. Sadly of no great value but looks like it could make for a good coaster -
Dont read this if you have not slabbed a cgs coin
mhcoins replied to PWA 1967's topic in TPG Discussions
Not wishing to offend any user of or the owners of CGS but i simply cant understand why people are using them for grading .... I know this has been said again and again but there isnt a HUGE market yet for slabbed coins in the Uk and those few that do want graded coins (that i know of anyway) insist on PCGS or NGC only. Yes CGS may be cheaper and possibly more accurate but if your looking to maximise the coins potential value pay the litte extra and send them abroad. -
