    Death To Pennies?

Here are two videos explaining why, in the US at least they should get rid of the penny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5UT04p5f7U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77C47XYm_3c 1 i thought it was quite interesting so decided to share and 2 what are peoples opinion of the (current) penny in the UK, useless? or not? After watching these videos I see some similarities between here and the US, our pennies are not as good looking as they once were so maybe it is time we got rid of ours?

    Death To Pennies?

It doesn't seem to do any harm, but it of course is the historic value of the coin that is preventing it from happening even in the US ( from what I can gather) let alone here where it essentially is 10 times as old

    Death To Pennies?

Yeh i was thinking the same as you Peck obviously because we have a comparability bigger history on our penny than the US and a lot of people not just those who are interested in coins would be sad to see the penny go Deflation- would be one way to increase the value of the penny, however this has the obvious drawbacks the other way would be to call the £1 coin the penny, 50p the half ( maybe have a need for the farthing again) then increase from there Note: i haven't really thought that last one through so it could be wrought with holes The point is, you would still be able to pay the 99p with plastic but it would be rounded up for all cash transactions
  4. I have been looking on the Reddit coins section and a lot of Americans ( sorry to generalise) seem to like the wheat pennies, my question being what is the attraction of these coins?
  5. I Have always said we should change our national anthem to Land of Hope and Glory, even if its for times where England plays Wales, Scotland or N-Ireland In the Rugby ( i would have said football too but from what I see they don't bother singing the national anthem any more anyway) I agree with what, I think Azda has been saying about Westminster using Scotland as a trial run for policies as you can see that happening, but what you have to realise of course is Scotland ( and the north) is predominately yellow and then red in its support of course the LIb Dem's have been a trailing party since their formation and thus neither of the main parties care about them, due to their large area to voter ratio. As for Scottish independence I believe that it wont happen ( at least not in this referendum) the vote has been swinging around the 30-40% mark for years now and I don't think it will change enough in time. Do I want it? not really I don't see the need to see the United Kingdom split, I do understand that people fee that they need to have the ability to govern themselves how they see fit, but splitting up will only cause problems for both sides, England will loose vital Scottish industries ( oil+gas, Salmon and fishing industry (Salmon and fisheries in Scotland is worth £millions-billions annually) ect) and as for Scotland because its such a highland country It will be heavily reliant on imports which with little competitive industry will see an eventual economic collapse. As a marine scientist, I see another problem as well when countries split, the two new countries get so focused on trying to make it work they tend to forget the sea, overfishing and other damaging practices become widespread and eventually fisheries collapse and they are vital for many economic +social functions. I believe this happened in Ireland when they split and large fishing villages/ ports collapsed. and there are a few Asian and African Countries which this also happened too. I Understand ( through my short time on this earth) that this country has problems, but instead of running off like a spoilt child which gets neither party anywhere, would It not be easier and better for both sides so sit down and talk about the problems and reasons behind it?

    Newbie Seeking Advice

Hi and welcome to the forum, I would say I am quite a beginner as well, but I have found the guys on here to be really helpful and they always take the time to answer any questions you might have. Personally I have collected things that appeal to me so I have quite a few odds and sods, but I go for military commemoratives because of my military family (the only decimal coins I own), myself being the only male member in over 200 years not to serve (as of yet). I have taken a liking to shillings over the past few months, thanks to some beautiful examples posted on here and have bought a few nice examples.
  7. I quite like the design and have a 1870 1/26th of a Shilling in EF, but wouldn't have more than one....
  8. Hey I found this on the street today, its rather battered but its about 2* as thick as a normal 50p and i'm 90% sure its not silver and i cant find anything on any piedfort 50p's from 1985, any ideas? Fake?

  12. Found a 1948 sixpence today with k and what looks like a C or a G on the reverse. What would this be? Will put a pic on when I have access to a camera
  13. Probably should say it's quite a small set of two letters under the main design
  14. What grade would you guys put on this?
  15. One thing that I have wondered, A full proof unc set of coins inc maudy how would you go about valuing, adding up all the coins or is there a reference for these sets?
  16. Asumel

    Full Set?

I found this http://issuu.com/spinkandson/docs/13015?e=2874488/5581310pi saying £240-£280 if I'm looking in the right place but the individual coins at proof UNC is Valued more than the set, this seems odd? and what would stop greedy people getting the £402 i calculated opposed to £240-£280?

    Grading?

says poor cleaning, but surely it couldn't have been that abrasive :/ Looks to me as if it was engraved at some point and someone has taken a while to erase whatever message was put there. As Rob says, it grades as Dire. I think you'd have to pay someone £5 to take it off you. As to the Morgan, it's not clear from the reverse photos but it looks as if it might have been abrasively wiped in the fields to me. With the scratches to the obv I can't see it as an attractive buy myself. But if you can get it for close to the silver value ... Personally I've always found better grade coins are less likely to cause me to regret my purchases later, but I know everyone is different. Yeh I find that, that's why I'm getting a second opinion
