    1861/21 half penny?

    ....with WW on the truncation?

    1861/21 half penny?

Is it the inverted Panda variety
  3. Think looks more like a repair to an underneath earlier O (at 140x mag).............rather than an N...............but I see it's already reached £261
  4. .....and the promised doubled date close up on this same coin. Colour differences due to digital microscope, but it is definitely same coin which you can verify by examining the small carbon spot to the LHS of the cross bar on the second numeral 4.............so a fully doubled date and also a fully doubled GRATIA on this example
  5. Indeed Ian. Here is another 1844 with fully doubled date, this time with 'tails up' to 4's, same as original post, and you can see that all the letters in GRATIA are also doubled. I will send digital microscope close up of date on this coin in separate post to follow, as not easy to see doubled date on this full obverse shot.
  6. Here is another example of fully doubled date, but this time on an 1844 with plain tails to 4's. Doubled parts of the legend (including full date) I have seen quite often within the Victorian Copper penny series. My feeling is that this is due to the mechanics of striking the coin (die bounce?) rather than intended human repairs. Having said that, there are undoubtedly also many examples of legend / date repairs within this same series.......but generally to individual letters / numbers rather than 4 in a row.
  7. Here is a reverse F for information. As Mike says, rounded lighthouse top................also distinct rock formation, perhaps easiest 'F' characteristic to spot.

    March 2018 LCA

Are others having trouble accessing LCA at the moment? I tried yesterday evening, and again this morning, and once I get in and try to search a specific category it says 'waiting for a response'..............and then times out.
  9. I’m attempting to clear stuff which has been sat in the attic for ages and came across a couple of old chains made from ‘silver’ coins, the first of which is pictured. It is made up of 1884 coins (10x 3d’s and 1 shilling). One or two are in ok condition e.g. the shilling, but as can be seen all have been soldered to make the chain. Does anyone have experience of such things, and whether better to try to remove solder (which I have never attempted) or should I just list on ebay ‘as is’, accept the outcome and save myself the effort? Silver is not my forte so I have no real clue as to value. If anyone does happen to be interested in purchasing please feel free to PM me. The other chain is made up of 21 x 4d’s (groats), William IIII and Victoria, an 1843 1½d, an 1817 Sixpence and a Queen Anne Shilling, most of which IMO are in poor condition apart from the 1843 1½d. Any thoughts welcome, thanks……….even if it’s chuck them away or sell for scrap!

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Thanks for a laugh Pete................but some of this sellers items for sale I found quite desirable............how Bizarre!!
  11. I am pretty sure these would have been made shortly after 1884 as they were worn by my wife's grandmother, born that year.... maybe a clue as to type of soldering for those who know more than me!

    1863 Open 3 Revisited

Richard's pennyvarieties website has recently been updated re. 1863 open 3 reverses to include the attached types, which are additional to his excellent example at the top of this page. I believe that all 3 types have been sold as open 3's at LCA
  14. Wonder whether, at that price, someone thought this was a weak 1875 canon ball:- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SCARCE-1875-Penny-VICTORIA-Bronze-1d-coin-Spink-3954-CHOICE-BU-SCARCE-833-/272836516615?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=uWO8owfz6c9AzlVeqq6TDXUE4GU%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
  15. Hi Terry, I did wonder whether they may be related to teeth gaps, a bit like on this 1860 F16..........again a bit of a mystery in that location!
  16. Gouby BP 1863 Ab - his page 46 "another new mystery looking or an answer!". Anyone had thoughts on this since his 2009 book? Die axes fairly well aligned and nothing on obverse to suggest ghosting.
  17. Sorry Bernie didn't realise that the title of my picture (Gouby BP 1860T_Satin 19) would not appear in my earlier post; that's why I didn't bother with a picture of the reverse side........I guess that's what you would expect from a Junior Member! Anyway, here's the reverse, for those of you that did not spot the missing colon:-
  18. An upgrade on my existing.......which has already been sold!
  19. I expect if you were to phone LC and speak to Semra saying that you want the F96 penny at the low estimate then she will say you can have it.....assuming that's what you now want.
  20. Interesting piece listed on ebay as a BIN, an 1874 Heaton penny displaying similar 'cock's comb' to the legendary 1862. Freeman 66, so same reverse as the 1862, but H. Think were described as flaws in the Colin Cooke 'Crocker' sale, can't see that it could be ghosting in that area, so seems coincidental similar flaw on last year of the Freeman G (Gouby g) reverse.......unless anyone has different ideas. Anyway, don't think I have seen this on any other piece 1863-1874. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1874H-Bronze-Penny-Victoria-Extra-Plumes-Higher-Grade-Similar-to-1862/401381843809?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649
  21. Attached pictures of Crosslet and Plain both just taken at exact same 140 x mag, maybe aid the discussion. Apart from the tails there certainly seem to be several other 'font' differences to me e.g. distances from foot to central 'horizontal bar', particularly noticeable at RHS. Have just had quick check at LCA recent sales and that particular 'difference' seems the same on past few examples of both types. Sorry I have not got higher grade pieces, sold to pay for holidays, shoes and new tops..........not for me!
  22. Well remembered Pete, yes I did do a study of 4's on Victorian Copper Pennies, thread starts at bottom of page 61 in the 'More Pennies' thread.
  23. Hi Mike, the USA coin is an 1879 MS63 F96, pictures attached, cropped pictures to best utilise 500MB data limit availability. Still think I should be well pleased at price I have paid, but somehow no longer feels like a bargain! I find this variety quite difficult, and have rarely seen in high grade.
