    Toned Coins

Not strictly a "British coin", and it's "post-decimal" on this side of the pond, but it bears G5, so I'll post anyway. I found the toning on this copper to be quite pleasing.

    Don't You Hate It When.......

Rob, you are right about Centlsles. I have never seen one of his coins (until now) that he didn't slab himself, and overgrade by at least one grade! With that said...this coin was slabbed by NGC...he must have bought it that way! Ha,Ha. Years ago, I bought a slabbed coin off of him, and when I received it, the coin was way over graded. I would never buy anything off of him, regardless of who slabbed it! Centsles, at any given time usually has around 500-1000 items up for auction. Of those, anywhere from a couple to maybe 10% may be graded coins by PCGS or NGC (the two more respected USA TPGs). And, even among those very few (reputably slabbed) coins, the images are usually so horrendous (possibly purposefully so) that you must be very, very careful. The moral of the story being, if you systematically dismiss all items from a particular source in a draconian way, you may miss out on coins that you would never otherwise encounter. The most recent item I purchased from him was a very difficult Canadian Provincial token, quite common in grades of EF or lower, but next to impossible in UNC. It is a common Courteau variety (#186, listed as R1). But, I promise, it's not an R1 in this grade!

    Don't You Hate It When.......

The eBay seller Centsles is renowned in the States for 1) never replying to private messages, 2) shipping coins slower than they could be walked to most destinations, and 3) selling cleaned/self-slabbed junk with only the occasional gem buried among the pedestrian. I have purchased 2 coins from that seller in the past 5 years -- the most recent took nearly a month to arrive, but it was a choice and rarely seen UNC Canadian provincial token. Mind you, Priority shipping to me from him takes 2 business days. Best of luck.

    Conder Token

Unless it's an UNC version of a RRRR token, I don't think you're rich. But, good luck! Feel free to post some pictures here, and we can help you out.

    Toned Coins

You'll probably not get a reaction from the American community because they won't hear that coins can be AT due to the fact they pay well over the odds for those coins and they would'nt want to look completely fools by being fooled and wasting so much cash in the process. This toning thing was started by Americans who are largely into marketing and pyramid crap type deals, Tell 1 poor sould that your coin is worth $$$$s more because of a bit of colour then spreads by Word of mouth and the. Everyone wants a piece of the action, prices rose for Common coins and booooooom you have a whole new collecting area where you "MUST HAVE" that Rainbow coloured coin. Someone somewhere posted (coincommunity) i think it was, then directed here that a guy went to an NGC Seminar and was told a coin was AT toned if it did'nt follow the spectrum of the rainbow, yet an NGC graded coin Popped up toned and not in sequence of the rainbow, so there you see how stupid its all bekomme for them, ignoring their OWN apparent facts. Its like them telling us area51 does'nt exist even when the Population of planet earth knew it did, yet they Kept telling the American public that it did'nt and the majority believed them lol That's an awfully large axe you have there to grind.

David's prices are also quite fair. I have been to that site often. Here's a link for those who aren't familiar.
  8. I collect mostly non-USA coins, but mostly collect whatever catches my eye. I do like toned coins that appeal to my eye (not everyone else's necessarily). The largest portion of my collection is thematic, including over 300 coins with horse imagery or some sort or another. In the realm of British (and Commonwealth) coins, I gravitate toward Conder tokens and Victorian pieces. Ah, hence the avatar? Interesting, guess you have some Charles I Half Crowns then!!! On my want list, but nothing within my budget that I have seen sell in the past 3-4 years. Wouldn't mind a nice James II VF-EF gun-money piece either.
