    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I also emailed them and they've replied asking for further information. I sent back their images with the tooth count illustrated. 130 teeth on either side - numbers which don't exist on genuine coins. Also sent them pictures of a fake 1869 penny with the same obverse/reverse, pointing out that that an 1881 penny would have a an "aged" portrait. And referred them to my varieties website for further info. They have now replied and are going to remove the coin from their auction.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Not Ebay but another auction house being fooled by a modern copy. https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/1818-auctioneers/catalogue-id-sr1810622/lot-1ad9d08e-f780-421e-b1e3-ae5b00ea231c?utm_source=auction-alert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=auction-alert&utm_content=lot-image-link
  3. Yes, you're right - but it's very clever.
  4. I'll check - that dark line looks suspicious. If so, then it's still not a bad price for a clever piece of work !
  5. Got to be the bargain of the week - a genuine double-tailed 1967 penny, bought for £62-50 when a double-tailed 1964 penny sold for around £930 at Spink earlier this year.

    The Tyrant collection

Strange - that's what I clicked on originally and it wouldn't let me go further without subscribing to something online. But the above link worked fine !

    The Tyrant collection

How do you get to look at this collection without taking out the subscription ?

    Russians

I assume that if they can only come here if they have relatives over here, those relatives will house them in most cases ?

  13. Interesting because this is the first time that Fedex have ever got it right for me ! Luck of the draw ?
  14. I've just received a penny from the Stacks-Bowers sale shipped by Fedex and, for once, they didn't slap the 20% charge on it - about 6.2% in fact - I have no idea how they arrived at that.

    F-10 penny Repunched R & I in Victoria?

Repairs to the legend are manyfold.

    F-10 penny Repunched R & I in Victoria?

I think the case for an overstrike with a "V" punch is strengthened by Gary's picture where the R and I are clearly overstruck.

    F-10 penny Repunched R & I in Victoria?

Yes, it's on my collection website. No sign of repunched R or I.

    F-10 penny Repunched R & I in Victoria?

I have in my own collection a similar example regarding the A/V. I have described it as follows: there is a clear and sharp but very thin crossbar to the A, possibly as a result of the A being repaired with an overstruck inverted V punch, leaving the the faintest but sharp remains of the crossbar, similar to the residual 8 of the 1861 F30 6 over 8 (see below under 1861 F30). The cross bar is barely visible in the above photograph but clearly and sharply visible at an angle under a magnifying glass.

    PENNY ID CHECK

Assuming that there was only one working die for the F27 because of its rarity, then dropped final 1 rules out your example 2 (all the example on my website have this lower1)

    PENNY ID CHECK

You sold me this penny as probably the first suggestion of the existence of the F27. You'll see that the top of the gap between helmet plume and head is very narrow and appears to me to be smaller than your examples. But it's a brave man that makes a firm decision.

    More Pennies

Anyone spot the 1862 5+G (H+g) penny on Ebay recently ? An exciting new find perhaps ? Gary S has confirmed that it was erroneous listing with the seller getting his photos confused. I had suspected as much because the obverse and reverse photos were different technologies (one was JPEG and the other PNG images). Disappointing though.🙁

My sturdy 5 has the same flaw. The slim 5 doesn't.
