  1. Bought an interesting penny in Baldwin's auction last week. Advertised as F15 with weak signature under the bust, it was clearly an F16 with some strange markings under the bust. Close up there is some extraneous metal, perhaps from a die clash, that appears to the naked eye to be a very weak "L C WYON" but isn't !

    1862/1 Half Penny

It bears no resemblance to the 1862 over 1 penny.

    1860 penny variety

If you search London Coins archives, you'll find plenty of lustrous F10 pennies that sold for under £200 - it's quite a common variety as Peckris describes above - just trying to manage your expectations.

    More Pennies

I think that may be taking things a bit too far ! Definitely one for the geeks.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

  6. Every day, Wordpress presents me with statistics of visits to my pennyvarieties website, indicating which country those visits are from. In the last 2 days, the majority of the visits have been from Russia ! I have never before seen any visits from Russia. Do we have a penny collector in Russia, I wonder, or is it some hacker looking for a way into the wicked West's computer systems ? Should we be worried ?????

Is the start of the reprisals ?

    10 out of 24 on Monday, 12 out of 20 on Tuesday - a select bunch !
  8. I've added this variety to both Varieties and Rarities websites. Do you have pics of Larry's obverse and reverse ?

    1860 penny variety

On a true beaded border penny ALL of the "teeth" are circular beads separate from the outer rim. If any tooth joins the outer rim then it is a toothed border. Check out the pictures on my varieties website (below)

Cameo or not ? Be wary !

So, I ask again, what's Ultra Cameo ?

Cameo or not ? Be wary !

    So what's Ultra Cameo ?

Cameo or not ? Be wary !

It's the grading companies - they're the ones I'm blaming.

Cameo or not ? Be wary !

Just received an email from Sovereign Rarities with their latest offerings which contain items described as "Ultra Cameo" and "Deep Cameo". This is getting ridiculous. They seem to inventing dozens of new grades at the top end. Any excuse to charge a bit more......

    1908 Penny (take 2)

There may be a clue in that the vendor won't post to the UK !
  16. Just goes to show the risks of buying coins from photographs alone. The camera lies like a cheap watch.

    1908 Penny (take 2)

You're absolutely right - surprised no-one spotted it before now - hopefully correct now.

    1861 Halfpenny

An in-focus photo would be helpful.
  19. Yes, simple as that with no variety !
  20. Picked up a very nice F28 a few days ago - auction estimate a very silly £80 - needless to say other people bid me much higher !

    1860 Penny Freeman obverse 1*

Right, so coincidentally you have a coin struck with the same dies that is in much better condition and recognisable as A+b.
