Alcohol, the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems!! Seriously though, I gott best mark at uni after 3 beers and my French becomes exponentially better with each quaf of the vino! ?
-
Thanks Peter. Yeah I love the sixpence, my favourite so far! Ok so don't do acetone as default on the whole coin? And yes my adhesives arrived today, proper excited! ??????
-
Have I seen somewhere that people use acetone (from pharmacists, not nail varnish remover) for their coins prior to storing them. I've finally got around to ordering some 2x2s and am going to start sorting things out and want to make sure I follow the correct procedure. Is there anything else to do? Cheers

Hi guys, before I started getting into coins on a more serious level, I picked up these two roman coins. I don't even know where to begin when it comes to identifying them, is anyone able to advise. Also, do you have an idea of value as I'll probably look to sell. Cheers, rich

Having googled the 1933 penny last week, I've been looking more and more at pennies and am really starting to appreciate their beauty. I'm starting to think that my collecting focus is going to shift from Georgie Boy the third, to pennies.
-
So the 5kg of old and foreign coins arrived today. On a very brief inspection I've already found C19th pennies in better condition than mine as well as some current Euros and then a real hotch potch. Any interesting discoveries I'll post later.
-
That's the one, I take it that's a good'un then ?
-
Yeah sorry, I'm not always the clearest. No it's one that I've seen that I'm interested in.
-
Thanks

Mostly, yes. Though owners generally wish to remain private. Ah ok, that makes sens, so it's private owners? I was wondering (hoping) it would have been museums or the like.

Unfortunately the attached didn't turn up in my searches but didn't want to keep clogging up the forum with multiple posts. Could I ask people's thoughts on it? In relation to the initial post, so far, unsurprisingly nothing has amazed me, but I've still got over 75% to go through

I've been trawling the internet for info, and appreciate that we don't know exactly how many have been produced, but from those that we are aware of, do we know where they are?

Re: your question regarding Demand, that's why I had set it as the denominator with the higher the demand, the lower the value, however I also see where you're coming from regarding demand = desirability. My take on desirability was more a 'nominal value' you could assign such as aesthetic appeal.
-
How do you define desirability? I like hammered, Peck can't be ar*ed. There are too many penny collectors on this forum, many would disagree. Some like bright coins, others toned. Some quality, others washers. This is too subjective to give a definite number. Availability is an ok parameter because it is a simple census and so is demand as long as you don't try to qualify it. I agree entirely, this was more a tongue in cheek time waster whilst at work than any real attempt to come up with some standardised scale.
-
I was catching up on this thread whilst at work, and as I was writing some coding thought I'd try to conceptualise the notion of rarity in a formula to give a "rarity score" so the following are my initial thoughts based upon a Likert Scale of 1-100 Rarity = ((Desirability + Availability) / Demand) where: Desirability (the most desirable, the higher the number) Availability (the greater the availability, the lower the number) Demand (the higher the demand, the lower the number) Obviously this is subjective and there may be some key factors that I've missed, however I think it covers the most pertinent elements raised that affects rarity.

Whaaaat??? I love car boot sales! Nothing beats sellin for all intents and purposes what I would otherwise class as "junk" and chuck, for peanuts and then afterwards, totting it all up and having £100 + but then, this time next year Rodders... ?

Okie doke, just tried that. I've done it before but because nothing showed up as "quoted" assumed it didn't work. I'll see if this works! Yes, I must admit, unless there's anything Hungarian or Norwegian, none of the foreign stuff will rock my boat, so will post if anyone's interested. Hoping it will arrive by Tuesday and then the fun can commence :D :D

Peck - I've tried quoting you but still can't work out, so in response: I paid £75. The description said "old and foreign coins". I'll probably rue this decision, but in my slightly inebriated state at the time and having won exactly £75 on the premium bonds thought, why not. I'll keep you posted on any interesting finds.

I'm relatively new myself. I'm sure the more experienced here will not advise what I've done, but I bought 5kg worth of coins from a charity recently and am now just awaiting delivery. I'm sure there'll be a huge amount of dross, but maybe that's an option???

and how do you go about re-toning if that's the recommended action?
