    Spotting dipped coins

I've read comments where it suggests you can "accelerate the toning process". I have ended up with a dipped coin, is it better to keep it how it now is or to try to re tone it? It's an 1890 crown. Thanks

    Recent aquisitions

Believe it or not, but my girlfriend has been getting into coins having seen some of the older coins that I've recently got. She's Hungarian however so finds their coins more interesting so picked up this rather nicely toned Corona recently

    Pre 1947 2/6

Yeah I sold a DVD to someone in Sweden last week, she couldn't pay for the item immediately (I had set the cost of postage in the uk, but hadn't even considered international) so we messaged and agreed a fee for postage which I invoiced her for and then I shipped this weekend at no loss to myself. I'm at work now but can find out what settings were applied if that's helpful?

    Pre 1947 2/6

Further to Mark's query, I have quite a significant number of pennies and half pennies and post 1947 sixpences, none of the older pennies and halfs (1900 - 1940) in anything better than Fair condition those in the 50s-60s decades are GF - EF and the same for the sixpences. Could you advise for how you've found best to get rid of these? Thanks, Richard
  5. Hi, I was successful and got it at the £19.99 price so well chuffed - thanks for your support. I've started goin through those links as well - thanks again for those, there are also some nice looking tokens from Dorset so I'll enjoy keeping an eye out for those.

    Long Shot Identifying A Coin

    Ok, and I could imagine a 1 could look like a 7 when it's so faded. Ok 1831 ?

    Long Shot Identifying A Coin

Hi All, so I'm getting to the end of all my granddads coins. Aside from the usual UK contenders, I've had some interesting finds including Danish 1771 1 Skilling, Greek 1876 5 Drachma, US 1898 One Cent, Mexican 1881 8 Real - no idea whatsoever how they ended up in our family, so that's the next piece of research. However, I'm at a loss at identifying this coin from closer to home. I'm working on the basis that it's a George IV Penny, but I have had no joy in working out the year as it's too heavily worn to pick up the year under magnifier glass. Are there any tell tale signs that I can look out for to work this out? Thanks

    Long Shot Identifying A Coin

Hi, yes, now not being under the influence (hence the blurry photo) and reading your thoughts I've given it another few views and can now see the 183... I think I can see a 7 but it is incredibly faint. Thanks all for your time and assistance.

    Long Shot Identifying A Coin

I thought as much. I was hoping there may be a random (e.g. letter) somewhere that could give a clue. I guess on the plus side, I can now say that I have an 1831, 1834, 1837 penny depending upon whichever takes my pick at the time - although maybe that's cheating!

    Long Shot Identifying A Coin

Woops, wow, complete muppet, apologies I meant William IV. I know it's not great quality at all, however I'd just like to be able to put a date to it as it's the last coin that I've not been able to identify. Cheers
  11. Yes really helpful - thanks. I've seen a few before but this was the best I'd seen to date. I'm quite interested in our local tokens and know there's others from Sherborne and Shaftesbury and more still. Are there any decent books on tokens you'd advise? Cheers
  12. Hi all, not mine (yet) but as a Dorset lad I'm interested. Could I ask your views on the below and what sort of price you think is reasonable: http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/291087326104?nav=SEARCH

    Kew Gardens 50P Hype

In keeping with the post a few above, I don't think they can release the mintages until after the end of the calendar year. Whilst they might know in advance for the commemorative crap marketed to the masses, a regular currency piece's mintage will depend on the demand from the banks for coin. If they don't order it, the Mint doesn't produce it.Yes, i still find it odd though. We've known these mintage figures for a while so why wait until now?

    Kew Gardens 50P Hype

I've been wondering why did the RM release this statement when they did? Are minting numbers for general circulation coins known in advance or does it depend upon the demand for coins that year and we don't know until after te year. The cynic in me thinks they're doing this to get more people to buy their special releases in the hope it'll be "the next kew 50p" or do we already know they'll strike say 4mil?

    First Purchase Update

Hi everyone, I've quoted a description attributed to a 1787 Shilling that I've seen from a website below: 1787 Without Hearts. No stop over head. ESC 1218 S3744. The S3744 I'm assuming is the Spink reference, but what does the ESC 1218 mean?

    Newbie Seeking Advice

Hi demonlee, welcome aboard. I'm in a very similar situation myself having been given a load of coins by my dad at Xmas that my granddad collected. I've been doing lots of reading (this forum is immense) and had been tending towards George III period. However, I saw a comment on another thread that I had posted which suggested (or this is how I've interpreted it) that if you're new, you should just collect a variety to see where your interest lies. I quite like this idea because it means you can go for whatever you like the look of. Either way, enjoy!

    Grading And A Pricing Query

Hi all, so since my last post I have now ordered and received my Spink (2011) and am excitedly waiting for the grading book through the post that was suggested by someone previously. I have now started going through some coins that my granddad collected (though not as a hobby) and most date from the 1920s-60s though there are quite a few oldies going back to the 1880s, although their quality is terrible and am trying to work out their grade for practice. As such, I wonder if people could pass comment on what they think of the attached and how far off the mark I am (though they're not great resolution piccies - ps I haven't got an external system for pics yet, so will try to post them individually, replying to this message. Untitled 1 - Fine Untitled 2 - Unc Untitled 3 - Poor Also, I'm still to dip my toes into buying anything. I really want to, but don't want to come a cropper immediately and still not sure where my interests really like. However I have been looking at prices and reading up on things and am struggling to answer the following. I noticed that on a website (R Ingram Coins) they have an EF 1797 Penny listed at £195 (no pic unfortunately). According to my Spink (albeit 2011) a 1797 EF Penny is either £325 (with 10 leaves) or £400 (11 leaves). Why the huge discrepancy? I have read that coins come and go out of fashion, but should you expect such a huge depreciation in price in just three years and do you get such trends on these kinds of coins? Thanks everyone! Really enjoying everything I'm reading and seeing! Rich

    Grading And A Pricing Query

There's so many coins, designs and the historical links (which is most important for me) that I'm thinking....everything! haha Seriously though, I think I'm going to go with George III. I'm really interested by all the re-stamping (probably got the terminology wrong) of foreign coins, though from what I've seen the prices are unrealistic at the moment. But then I have a lot of these coins from my granddad which are turn of the 20th century and feel it would be a good start. So still not really sure.

    Grading And A Pricing Query

Thanks for all of this. As I said, I heeded the advice and wont buy, I was just interested to see what people disliked about it because as a novice I did quite like it and so wondered what you guys didn't like.

    Grading And A Pricing Query

Apologies, no I meant the half penny I copied the link for from ebay. No the pictures I added were coins from my grandad that my dad gave me at Christmas which I'm resigned to realising dad only gave me the lower value coins to pique my interest.

    Grading And A Pricing Query

Not that I'm now interested but just for my knowledge, what are the particular big turn offs on this coin? And by that I mean the original coin I posted.
