Lowly beginner in need of guidance

Welcome to the forum Mark, glad you decided to settle here and post Also well done on doing some prior research, the more you know the less you'll get stung (although count on being stung at least a few times lol), many people dive in head first and realise after they've spent too much on not a lot. You'll have to do a bit of research if you're doing a particular year because there are some around that decade that can cost you an arm and a leg, for instance a 1902 half crown will cost you 120-180 for a nice UNC one, whereas the same coin from 1905 will cost you 500 in a very poor grade. There are also some denominations that were not struck for certain years so there's that to consider too. Sounds like a good start to collecting though, look forward to seeing some pictures! Any doubts on grades on prices, put up a post as there are many here that will help with anything you're unsure about.

    Coin Pics

The first picture of the obverse is definitely better focused, but once in focus I think they look good! My cushion was beige

    More Pennies

That's how I go about it too, but wrapped in a tea towel first. Limits the explosive radius
  8. A extra little bonus then, always nice when that happens. Good spot Nick
  9. Not bad from a scrap find! Did you pay much on the lot?

    George VI Pennies Wanted

    It's a 1944 so Freeman C I believe.
  12. Forgetting about the missing waves for a second, that's a lovely 1929
  13. You can use any application that has a transparency setting, just make one picture a little more transparent so you can see the background image and overlay it. If no-one has done one by tomorrow I'll mock one up but I have meetings for the rest of the day and don't have any app like that at home.
  14. They just look thicker and thinner to me, but the same 3. Not just different strikes in a die's life?

    more FAKES

It's normal that some coins have a small amount of rotation, so it's not fake in that regard. Looks good to me.

    George VI Pennies Wanted

The triple struck colon is a nice one and easily seen in a picture. The forked tips examples I'm not losing sleep on however.

There should be photos on the CGS site of these ones David
  19. Only got mine the other day due to international shipping and the lax attitude of the people in this country Interested to know what others think to the 3 pictures I have, first mine, second CC's and lastly Steve's... I personally prefer mine but I took it so it's biased of course.
  20. Nice! I missed that post, good find. Here's the filled 1920 I was on about. Not a bad grade either.
  21. What a nice find Richard. Thanks for sharing.. although it did make me a little jealous
