    My other Hobby

Great fun What model have you got Dave? There are some serious players in the market now that the drone scene has really kicked off.

    Newbie Sovereign Collector

Some 'light' reading for you Thread 1 Thread 2 And of course we have a dedicated section for discussing these things; TPG Subforums Enjoy!
  3. Does Michael know who the owner of the coin is? btw...I can't see that the index finger is any shorter than the regular coin. Is there another identifier? Coppers just posted a helpful link but I was going to say the trident points at a bead on reverse C but between beads on reverse B. I think that S-4054A is the reference for the reverse in particular (used between 1927-36)
  4. Ditto Peter!

Welcome to the forum Joe! Are you not having withdrawal symptoms from parting with such an extensive collection?! Gold isn't my area unfortunately but someone will be along shortly I am sure
  6. I imagine Steve (Accumulater) might be interested on here. Good luck to you though Pete!

Who do you trust for coins in bulk?

Hi bunhead, Just echoing what Pete has said, although back in my early days I did used to buy a lot of cheap bulk coins from ebay to sort through. Welcome nonetheless

Nice coins Danz! Such a shame that the off centre strike got lost, that's a beaut.

    Error coins

Ha! I can understand that! I suppose the point I was trying to make is that when it comes to the more spectacular errors (i.e. not just a die crack, die fill, cud etc) they're not overly common in Australia as there's just less coin production. Our local coin magazine has a regular column of errors though which tend to focus heavily on dies cracks, cuds and the like, and this coverage translates to ebay as you have found out - everyone is trying to wring a few extra dollars out of some pretty insignificant (and common) errors. Ah I see! Indeed I agree with that, the droll I have to filter out is usually die cracks and cud errors (gotta hate those cuds haha) and they're all between 2-5 quid each, so nothing extravagant! Certainly I've seen more brockages, strike throughs and broadstruck GB Coins in comparison to the Aussie ones, the errors that actually carry some sort of significance. It's a shame that your local lists all of the nitty bitty things (especially the cud errors), it really just turns it into a quick scan instead of a good read. I don't mind a good die crack, as long as it's a good one (insert joke here).

    Error coins

They certainly do have a lot more popularity than over here, it would be nice to see some more people taking notice because invariably more errors would start to surface. Good to see that you've bought from someone from that site too, adds to the reputability. Mr. T, I'm going to have to disagree with you there! I have to exclude the word 'Australia' from any searches I do purely because of the sheer quantity of Australian error coins that are listed. Having said that, I'm not 100% whether this is just due to the lack of popularity in England because they are very aware of the errors down under. It does keep them cheap for the meantime, although there are some out there that command some serious premiums already so will be nice to see if there is an increase of decrease in value over the coming years.

Maybe? Seems not to have been fully exposed to the hypo either. Or whatever they used.

    Double headed George V HalfPenny

Here are some pictures of where to look for a line that shouldn't be there

    Double headed George V HalfPenny

It could be genuine, but far, far more likely it's just a bit of handy work. They normally come as; - One coin hollowed out, the other slightly ground around the rim and then pushed into the hollowed out penny - Both coins ground on the reverse to about half the thickness, then fused to have both sides with an obverse (or heads side) Check if there is either a line going around the rim, almost splitting the coin in half, OR, just around the rim but on one of the faces there should be a similar line that shouldn't be there.

    Error coins

Good to see a post from you! I have seen your name pop up everywhere while error coin hunting Great article and some nice pictures to match! I have a link bookmarked for reading up on errors, it's easily one of the most comprehensive lists I've found so far, albeit directed towards American coinage. A lot is still applicable! http://www.error-ref.com/

    Coin Pics

Told you BRG's were the best I think the actual detail and craftsmanship on some of the designs of the conders is amazing and certainly adds to the overall look of the pictures, but still, the pictures themselves are really professional.
  17. Much like the 1911 penny (with the I of BRITT as the indicator for me) I've seen quite a few variations of where the I actually sits in relation to a tooth. I'm remember there being a thread on here about it, and a handful of people provided pictures of different spacings and alignments of the teeth and the lettering for their hollow neck penny..
  18. Yes you have a hollow neck there ..wait now I'm doubting it..
  19. Thanks chaps, and as always, thanks to Rob for a great explanation. I'll have to dig around for these pictures for comparison, thanks!
  20. Trying to figure out if this was a pre or post mint.. It looks like it's been dipped maybe, but there aren't any other signs of this. Opinions greatly appreciated as always.
  21. No certainly not, that's what I'm trying to ascertain though. I do have some pennies with post mint 'detailing', we shall call it, but they are a small side section and mainly things like nicely engraved coins or things as such.
  22. Of course it is, but it's an error coin, not one for the main collection
  23. That's food for thought, actually. It's always good (not to mention fun!) to try and replicate post mint errors, even just to understand how they come about. But I have no idea where I'm going to get a sand-blaster to test that theory
