He's just jumping on the proverbial band wagon! It's a classic technique that's seen things from shoes to motorbikes being sold for £££££ over their actual amount. That was why i didn't post that part haha. I'll try and find the original(?) that kicked this sort of thing off..

The first line in the description reads: "I'm broke, anybody with loads of money want to buy this dirty penny for way more than it's worth?"
-
They're surprisingly common and that's among the worst examples I've ever seen! Keep looking (on UK eBay) and you'll definitely find a much better one for less than £30. As mentioned above, the rarities (which are VERY rare) are the miss-spelt 'PENNEY', the dated 1844 and the all silver examples. There are also lots of micro-varieties, for which there's a book published, should you be interested in researching further. Do you know the name of the book cheers Not sure of the micro varieties book but Freeman's book covers a lot of the model pennies and has plates as well.

An example of the "Penney" model penny error has just sold on eBay for £565 (or withdrawn) about 20 minutes a go.. Link

Hi Shamo, I think that's called an "ideal world". Whichever coin collecting postie pinched that one isn't giving it back, especially if it was something like a 1862 b/r. You're correct though, if something does miraculously turn up and still has the contents inside then the RM should deliver it to you still. (They'll probably deliver it still even if empty) If you find the same coin being sold in an auction entitled "Property of a Postman", I doubt they'll give it back to you as a 'who paid for it first' type scenario!

10 points, that man. Hard to get a clear picture but hopefully you can see it as obviously as I can in hand..

Ten Cents Hong Kong

Looks like an issue with the milling on the edge, I don't know of any way this can happen during the striking process apart from something far fetched like a foreign piece of metal getting stuck between the planchet and collar(?) Unfortunately I don't know enough about the process of milling the edges to give you a definitive answer.. -
is'nt isn't sorry couldn't resist. Is this not the 'Items for Sale' section though, seems a little standoffish? After all, he's a starter member, you can't really blame him for posting an item for sale in the correct category!

1967 Halfpenny Advice Please!
Nordle11 replied to Coinery's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Looks fine to me.. either just a weak strike, a rubbish photo or a combination of both. The only thing suspicious looking is the missing window on the right of the ship, but it might just be a cause of one of the above. -

Help Farthing 1862 A
Nordle11 replied to patrick6's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Ah yes, I can see it now. I did wonder if that's what you meant by Farthing 1862 "A" but was hard to tell from the photo! Nice coin by the way Patrick -
Help Farthing 1862 A
Nordle11 replied to patrick6's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
No worries! Don't take my word as gospel though, as I'm sure others will have their own opinion of grade.. Can I ask what variety of ha'penny this is? What makes it rare? I don't have Freeman to hand to check... -
Help Farthing 1862 A
Nordle11 replied to patrick6's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
For a start that's a half-penny not a farthing But probably aEF/EF? Although it's hard to be exact from the picture.. -
Ahahaha Then it would read "1903 penny with full shite."
-
Yes, "shine" is definitely more apt than lustre in this case.

1965 Half Penny Clipped Planchet Error?
Nordle11 replied to MACKSILKY.'s topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Not too common but not an expensive error, you can get yourself one for £5-10 depending on where you look. I believe that the first press cuts a long strip of metal into squares (when the cutter goes off centre and cuts into an adjacent square you get a straight clip like yours) and then the second press cuts out the blanks from the squares (again when off centre it gives a round clip like Scott's). Clipped coins aren't specifically on here but try this site for some different errors http://www.coinnews.net/tools/error-coin-price-guide-with-mint-error-photo-descriptions/ -
1965 Half Penny Clipped Planchet Error?
Nordle11 replied to MACKSILKY.'s topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Looks like a clipped planchet from the initial punching (straight cuts). if it were round it would be clipped when puching out the blanks. From what I can see there's good fading on the beads by the clipped part, which is a good indicator that it is a genuine error and not a post-mint error. -
Also, as a side note, if you ever want to talk 50ps then give me a shout! I've collected them all except for some unique rarities (such as the olympic aquatics with lines on face). I also don't have the Glasgow Commonwealth 50p but the only reason I don't is because I don't want to pay £10 when I can just wait and get it for a few quid in a few months
-
It just tells you the mintage figures for 2008 to present, but it says 22,747,000. I got that from here - http://www.royalmint.com/discover/uk-coins/coin-design-and-specifications/fifty-pence-coin You can click into each coin for mintage numbers. Another good source, although it doesn't mention mintage figures for the Matthew Dent design, is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifty_pence_%28British_coin%29.

2009 20P Coin, Has The Queen Really Got A Boil?
Nordle11 replied to MACKSILKY.'s topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Like Rob says, this is a random error but because of the poor quality control these aren't as infrequent as you might think. This also isn't confined to the 20p, all denominations would have errors such as this. The 1897 o'ne penny flaw is different to a blob of metal attached to the coin, this is where the die itself has become damaged and when coins were struck the metal raised up into the damaged part of the die to create the dot. It's interesting to know, as you can find examples of it (and the 1946 one' flaw) with a fairly small dot, and then others which are so obviously pronounced and have clearly been struck well after the die was damaged. Haha I saw that too, loving the frumpy side-on shot of his face I love how they've gone one step extra and say it's being funded by Sean Connery, seriously, we aren't that brain dead!
