It's so disconcerting to hear one of the leading slabbing companies is grading plated coins as solid gold. Who to trust in this minefield of deceptiveness?!

Interested at all? http://www.dnw.co.uk/auctions/catalogue/lot.php?auction_id=306&lot_id=271 It's a very nice example, but I'm not willing to pay that price for just a curio. Agreed. £450-600 would be tempting, however.. -
How can you have '24 carat plated'? If the 'plating' was anything less than 24 carat that would just mean that the bar had less gold plating. The unit of carat is just a ratio of (mass of pure gold) to (mass of material). This is like saying "the gold bit of this 8 carat necklace is 24 carat". Haha

Nordle11 replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
My guess is around 1.5x to 2x this estimate. So about; 1817 £100 to £160 1821 £120 to £250 1823 £90 to £160 But what do I know -
Does kindle read e-pub? I don't want to now buy the kindle version as well?I've downloaded a couple of free e-pub readers, but none appear to be able to file search my phone for the download? It isn't supposed to but you could try this somewhat lengthy process - http://www.wikihow.com/Read-ePubs-on-Kindle-Fire.

The darkened post-war pennies are lush and leave my darkened farthings alone Absolutely agree. A truly UNC Edward VII darkened farthing is a thing of great beauty with an almost purplish sheen and detail that's far easier to make out than on a BU type. I should point out that I don't in any way dislike the darkened bronzes, and I definitely agree they're great for detail, I was just saying that they stand out like a sore thumb next door to the other lustrous ones

What makes that suspect? Surely it makes more sense that it's cropped again after being sold recently.

Currently £750 at the time of posting. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ultra-Rare-1983-2p-New-Pence-Royal-Mint-Mule-Error-RARE-/151251289184?pt=UK_Coins_OtherBritish_RL&hash=item2337478460 Although the first line in the description is quite annoying. If you want a reserve on it....PUT A BLOODY RESERVE ON IT!!

Or in some cases of bronze where they've darkened the coins because of their own shortcomings. These alongside my BU pennies isn't very eye appealing.

Is that a serious offer. I've been looking to get my 1937 proof crown reslabbed as a one off. It originally came out of a PCGS slab but I guess an NGC slab would do the trick. There is very little difference in terms of marketability between NGC & PCGS. And interesting comment by William Conroy in this LinkedIn discussion: http://www.linkedin.com/groups/NGC-ICG-PCGS-148283%2ES%2E5846925117900230656?qid=6f0cac44-91f5-41dc-9e1f-5871f11195f7&trk=groups_most_recent-0-b-ttl&goback=%2Egde_148283_member_273929632%2Egmr_148283 Very interesting read, I've saved this one down for future reference. Thanks Jaggy!

Jeez, Anyone Bidding?

There were 2 bids in the last minute so if not then second chance offer would probably be safe anyway -
In my very limited experience (just over 5 years), that is one of the best tips you will ever receive I liked Peck's post for this tip exactly, best advice I've heard since starting to collect..

Nice coin Paulus!

Great suggestion if you really have no idea where you want to start, go to a local coin fair and you'll soon have a rough idea of what appeals to you and the sort of prices you might be looking at. Plus, dealers also have excellent examples of most coins available so you can see what a really beautiful coin looks like in it's top grade.

Hi Dan, welcome to the forum! A few broad but basic starting points to consider; Do you want to collect pre or post decimal coins? (before or after 1971) Do you like a certain denomination? (pennies, shillings, crowns, etc.) Do you prefer a certain era or monarch? Do you lean towards a specific metal i.e gold, silver, bronze, etc.? Do you see yourself collecting a date run of some type or perhaps one coin from each monarch? Answering a few of these questions might get you started.. There are a multitude of ways to collect, getting right into it, buying a few cheap but nice coins and seeing what you prefer before narrowing it down is the best way to start, instead of trying to narrow it down before you start collecting. Lots of friendly people on here who will all share their own interests, mine is pennies! I'm going for a date run to collect an example from each year from between 1860 - 1967, although I do like to keep back nice examples of any other UK coin, depending on prices Matt
